Why do some languages simply vanish?
When the last speaker of Dalmatian died in an explosion in 1898, an entire branch of the linguistic tree was severed forever. But Dalmatian isn't the only language that disappeared. From the fierce Vandalic Kingdom in North Africa to the mysterious Gothic Bible, history is littered with "Ghost Languages" - voices that belonged to countries that no longer exist.
