The historical Kingdom of Sikkim, established in 1642, held sway over its current territory in modern-day India, including regions in Eastern Nepal, Western Bhutan, and parts of India and China. The monarchy's origins date back to a 14th-century Tibetan prince who received divine guidance and became the first Chogyal, or priest-king. Sikkim's complex past involved conflicts and influences from neighboring powers such as Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, and the British Raj, eventually leading to British protectorate status. After India gained independence in 1950, Sikkim became an Indian protectorate, later integrating as the 22nd state in 1975 through a referendum. Sikkim, known for its stunning mountainous terrain and rich biodiversity, continues to be an integral part of India's diverse landscape.
