Have you ever heard of the vegetable orchestra
0:01
Well, I have. You might have seen King Charles. Yeah, we saw the king. Of course we didn't. He was playing his carrot
0:07
Well, this is the very orchestra that he played with. So should we have a listen
0:10
I think we should. What they can do, because believe it or not, they are playing their vegetables to make music
0:16
Take it away. Well, that's a treat
0:35
That is extraordinary. It's Becky, Patrick, Claire and Simon. Morning to you, guys
0:42
Why is it... We'll just get a microphone to you. There you go. I mean, what is the desire
0:48
Where does this come from, Patrick? Well, we like being silly and we like making music
0:53
and we all like vegetables, so we put the three together, basically. So, for people listening on the radio
0:58
What vegetables are we playing this morning? So I've got a butternut squash, Simon is playing a sweet potato
1:03
Claire has a carrot, and on the end Becky is playing some utensils
1:07
so she's got a cheese grater, a bowl and a saucepan. Very good. And how do you get the sound out of the vegetable
1:12
Are they hollowed through? Yeah, so these two instruments here on the end are like brass instruments
1:18
so we've got mouthpieces made of carrots, which we just buzz against using our lips, and then we've got a carrot recorder
1:24
which is made completely like a proper recorder would be made, And it sounds like a recorder. It is just a recorder
1:31
Yes, we could hear it from in here. It's in the newsroom. See, what I'm intrigued by is, were you up this morning making your instruments
1:38
How fresh are they? I was making it in the kitchen, just down there, yeah
1:41
So you've got a bit of a mess to clean up. Oh, that's fine. That fine I quite good at cleaning up The recorder I intrigued by the recorder because it the one if you like that sounds most like an actual instrument Yeah So another member of our orchestra Tim Cramor
1:58
he is a recorder maker by profession and by trade, and he makes these, and they are, like Simon said
2:04
made in exactly the same way that you would make a recorder from wood, but we just use carrots instead
2:10
It makes a great sound. It's very similar. In fact, sometimes a little bit nicer, I think
2:14
Yes. Yes. Patrick, I want to talk to you because when King Charles played
2:19
with the Vegetable Orchestra, you were there, weren't you? What was that moment like for you
2:22
I was. It was an extraordinary moment. So he'd invited us to play at Windsor Castle
2:28
and we were told, basically, don't give him a carrot, don't encourage him to play, don't do anything like that
2:34
And we found ourselves, by coincidence, at the end of the line where he goes along shaking everyone's hand. And he came up to us and we'd say, oh, you know
2:39
so, very interesting playing carrots and so on. And then we said, would you like a carrot? Oh
2:43
Oh! You pushed your luck. Yeah, basically, but it worked. And he took it and played a few notes
2:49
and we just sort of circled him and played Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. And he played the whole thing with us
2:55
Not every single note, but he gave it a good go. So it was quite a special moment
2:59
Love it. I want to know from all of you, do you like eating your vegetables as much as you like playing them
3:07
Yes. Sometimes when making these instruments, we're practising at home, you know, making them
3:12
So there has been a roast dinner with carrots with holes drilled in them on the plate already
3:17
Fair enough. This is the most British thing I think I've ever seen
3:22
There's something about the Brits and just being silly and just having fun. Even with a cheese grater
3:28
Even with a cheese grater. Absolutely. I think as a percussionist you get very used to improvising and making music with whatever you find around
3:36
So it's fun. It's brilliant. It is extremely British and we love it
3:40
It's really good to see you all this morning. Thank you very much. Thank you very much
