True Grinch fashion, one neighbour has written a bar humbug letter to a festive father-to-be
0:05
outraged by what he calls Dave Goodland's cheap and tacky Christmas display outside his house
0:11
There is no such thing as cheap and tacky Christmas display. Christmas is cheap and tacky
0:16
Dave accidentally, it happens, come on, brought a 20-foot inflatable Santa, believing it was just four foot tall, and inflated it outside his house
0:27
Well, the neighbour's fury and Dave's giant Santa have now gone viral
0:31
And he's been left with little choice but to deflate the big man himself
0:36
Or looking at that picture, he went and brought a snowman that matched
0:40
Any case, we don't know. So joining us now is the man himself, Dave Goodings
0:44
Dave, you must be a bit deflated by this story. Hello, good afternoon, guys
0:51
Yes, very deflated because last weekend, the Sunday just gone, we decided to put up our Christmas decorations
0:57
You've got the tree behind me. And then outside the front, we've got two giant Christmas inflatables
1:02
One being a giant snowman and the other a Father Christmas. And the reason being behind this is
1:08
yes we did make a mistake last year and they sent us the wrong order and we decided to keep the Father Christmas and we gone full out this year once again But we are expecting a baby in the first few months of next year
1:19
So it's a very special Christmas and special time of year for us. So we want it to go full out
1:23
And just from the success of last year with the Father Christmas, when we did the giant inflatable then
1:28
it brings so much happiness and smiles to people. But this year it's a little bit different
1:34
It's making me smile just watching you inflate your giant inflatables. I mean, so people have complained
1:41
Grinches have complained about this. It's just the one complaint letter that we've had through the post
1:46
We put them up on the Sunday, on the weekend just gone, and then I got home from work on Monday to an envelope
1:53
that had been posted through the door. There's, you know, no writing on the envelope, which I thought was a little bit weird
1:57
I opened it up and, lo and behold, in the envelope was this long letter, all in capital letters
2:03
I couldn't believe it, what I was reading. And at first my heart sunk because I'm not the kind of person
2:08
at all. I hate upsetting anyone, hate any confrontation, stuff like that. But for me
2:13
you know, I was reasoning. I was like, oh, have I upset someone? But then after reading
2:18
it a couple of times, you know, it's so silly. It's a time of year where you can let your
2:22
hair down have a little bit of fun at Christmas And it just one person who upset Whereas there you know hundreds of people that have passed our street even go out their way to visit our Christmas decorations
2:33
And they love it. You should see the smiles on people's faces when they see it. Now, this letter that you've got through
2:39
was it signed by any of your neighbours? Do you know who sent it
2:44
No, there's a few suspects in the street, but, you know, I'm not going to name anyone or anything like that
2:48
So, you know, you look down the street, Could it be that person opposite
2:52
Could it be this person right at the end of the road? I just don't know. But it was signed off an unhappy neighbour
2:58
And what made me laugh was just it was all in capital letters. Yeah, lucky it wasn't in green pen
3:03
That's normally the case. So, Dave, what have you done with your giant Santa
3:07
Is it in a box for next year now? We have actually taken them down as of last night
3:13
just to sort of decide what to do and what's our next move
3:17
It's just sort of snowballed since I posted online. I was debating whether I should upload a photo of the picture on
3:24
you know, Instagram and TikTok. And I thought, you know what, it is quite funny. We've got to laugh about these things
3:29
I've always, you know, you'd just be sad about it. So, yeah, it's all kicked off
3:32
It been across all the newspapers today and it gone viral online And we just deciding what to do really because it really has snowpoured Gosh well I hope your neighbours have all taken it in good humour that photographs of their street
3:47
are now strewn across the national press. I mean, are you at least going to host a sort of
3:52
neighbourly party so that your neighbours can join in with the Christmas festivities
3:57
Yeah, there's a few ideas of how we could handle the situation. Some people have been saying online
4:01
that I should go full out and maybe even add more inflatables
4:05
to our decorations. Others say, take it in, it is cheap and tacky
4:09
Another person or company that we might have upset is Chessington World of Adventures
4:14
They're just around the corner from us, and we've kind of joked that maybe we're stealing trade from them
4:18
because we've become the new tourist attraction in town. What about some lights
4:22
I mean, you take the inflatables down and get some lights up. That would be good
4:26
That wouldn't be at all irritating, would it? Yeah. I don't know if we left it too late this year
4:30
but if we do decide to bring them back next year, maybe we could add lights or even do, like
4:34
a Christmas light switch-on event like you get in town and maybe you could have a DJ or a host
4:39
and turn it into an event where it brings the community together. And, you know, that's what I've tried to achieve with this
4:44
is just see the smile on people's faces. Well, Dave Goodings, the owner of an accidental Santa's grotto
4:50
thanks indeed for joining us. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. Absolutely
