Kate, we saw you outside the court yesterday celebrating
0:03
Congratulations, you've had a big part in this battle. How quickly do you expect these anomalies
0:13
that we've been talking about to be resolved? And what happens if public bodies
0:17
I'm thinking of all sorts of NHS-style bodies, drag their feet? That's a question that we were discussing just before this programme
0:26
So it's brilliant news to hear about the British Transport Police. And I think this is exactly what's going to happen
0:33
Some of the things that are happening within these organisations, big institutions particularly like the NHS
0:39
are simply indefensible in light of this very sober ruling by the Supreme Court
0:46
They were absolutely clear. They went through Equality Act line by line
0:51
to defend the clarification that they were providing. And you're right as well to point out it's not a change
0:59
It's just a clarification. And for most of us, common sense, reasonable people will think
1:04
well, obviously that's the case. But there's a real cohort of people for whom a kind of a mushy understanding
1:10
of what the Equality Act is proved extremely beneficial to them. And those were people who were often bad actors
1:19
And why all of our institutions like the police and the NHS
1:23
have ended up getting behind these bad actors rather than behind women and behind same attracted people I think it a question for another day The capture of these organisations is so absolute
1:36
So I think it'll unwind maybe quicker than we had even hoped
1:41
Maybe we'll get everything that we wanted. Who knows? Kate, do you... I mean, I personally feel this very strongly
1:48
Do you think that women are owed an apology, certainly from many of our leading politicians
1:54
especially the female politicians, even more depressingly, for how women have been treated in this situation
2:00
Well, I think we're owed one, but I'm not holding my breath, frankly. I think what will happen is what we've seen already
2:07
people kind of pretending that they always meant that all along and that they were always in support of single-sex spaces
2:13
And I suppose of the two options, digging their heels in and refusing to go along with it
2:18
or just pretending they always thought that in the first place, I suppose the second option is better
2:24
But, yeah, there's a huge amount of anger and resentment, especially from women, people that you've mentioned
2:31
like Kathleen Stock, who is actually a trustee of LGB Alliance and I know her very well, went through a hell of a lot
2:39
And not just high-profile women, who you see in the papers and you see on the telly, ordinary women all across the country
2:46
who've dared to say, you know, that's a man in my changing room
2:50
getting undressed And I don like that There countless women who really really suffered through this So I hope we don forget those women and their efforts and their struggles but I do think this is really the beginning of the end for this awful
3:05
sort of queer, LGBTQ-plus-inspired project, which has driven everybody to madness, frankly
3:13
Kate, I've seen you at Tory party conferences over the last few years, and we've been thrilled
3:18
to have you on the GB newsstand and talking to us. The Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats, as I recall
3:24
have made you much less welcome. Is that now going to change
3:29
Well, that's another question to be seen. We've applied. We've applied this year to all of the conferences
3:34
as we do every year. I did speak at the Lib Dem Fringe this year
3:40
which is kind of sticking my toe in the water towards acceptability, possibly
3:46
But this is absolutely a cross-party issue. It's one for women and it's one for gay people
3:54
It's not remotely party political. And what I've seen already is some commentators
3:59
who are upset about this ruling dropping in the talking point that this is Trump, Trump's on its way to the UK
4:08
And being painted as right-wing, extreme right-wing organisations that somehow receive mysterious funding
4:16
from evangelical groups in America is so insulting to so many women who work for free
4:23
who lost everything who sacrificed so much And they do it because they believe in it and because of the principle And it absolutely appalling that we very often smeared in this way
4:35
and our organisation is smeared in that way as well. We're cross-party, we in particular represent gay people
4:42
and women's groups represent women, and we're everywhere. Kate, finally, just one question
4:48
We've talked about some of the high-profile women involved getting death threats and rape threats
4:53
and all sorts of horrors are threatened against them. Have you experienced anything like that since this decision was made yesterday
5:01
Has the reaction been in any way sort of like threatening to you
5:07
Do you know, it's been a little bit subdued, the reaction, and I think that's thanks to the fact that the Supreme Court judgment itself
5:16
was so sober and thorough. So it's squashed a little bit of that
5:22
But I think it's still to come because people are agitating in the background
5:27
Lots of people are saying, well, we're going to ignore it anyway. We can go into female spaces if we want to
5:32
So I think there's stuff fermenting in the background and we're still all taking it in and really absorbing what this is going to mean
5:40
So it's yet to be seen. Well, congratulations again, Kate, because I know you fought a brave battle
5:46
And I hope that we do see LGB alike at the Labour and Liberal Democrat Conference
5:49
and if they don't let you in, we'll be talking about that on GB News
5:53
because that's an infringement of free speech. Great to talk to you. That is Kate Barker from the LGB Alliance
