in this particular episode prague
0:03
in the czech republic and what an
0:05
amazing place
0:07
prague is it's absolutely perfect
0:10
especially for a weekend visit i've been
0:12
to prague
0:13
as i mentioned the capital of the czech
0:15
republic twice
0:16
over the last 10 years or so and
0:19
realized that both times i'd only ever
0:21
seen the airport to the hotel to the
0:22
meeting room
0:23
and back to the hotel so decided it was
0:26
time to change that
0:27
and arranged a three-night long weekend
0:29
visit and having done it
0:31
i wish i'd done it an awful lot sooner
0:34
prague in recent years has had a
0:36
reputation of being a bit of a tourist
0:38
nightmare in some ways renowned at one
0:40
time for rowdy
0:41
stag and the hen weekends largely people
0:44
from the uk arriving
0:45
on low-cost flights and in summer being
0:48
rammed full
0:49
especially with u.s tourists who have
0:51
added prague as a must-see
0:53
destination in the european schedule
0:54
along with paris
0:56
let's clear that prague is still a very
0:59
popular destination it's apparently the
1:01
sixth most visited city in europe
1:03
which i read somewhere not if that means
1:05
anything
1:06
but as the heart of the old part of the
1:08
city is is quite compact and small it
1:10
does feel
1:11
incredibly busy as tourists all walk and
1:14
work
1:14
a fairly small route in a very small
1:16
area as all the must-see attractions
1:19
are in that kind of very intense area so
1:22
it does probably feel a pretty
1:23
busy city to be in now the city center
1:26
itself
1:26
is quite remarkable it's very ancient
1:30
undisturbed and almost fairy tale-like
1:34
now this is helped by the fact that it
1:35
was it was occupied by the germans in
1:37
the second world war and it wasn't
1:38
bombed during its liberation
1:40
and it seems then that all the
1:42
development of you know sort of new
1:43
residential and tower blocks
1:45
has actually been made well outside of
1:47
the center
1:48
and if you go up the hills which are
1:50
sort of within the old city
1:52
you can see looking further out what
1:54
appears to be rather unattractive
1:55
developments out of the city
1:57
and i'm also wondering whether during
1:58
the soviet years so after the russians
2:00
famously sent tanks into
2:02
1968 to crush a move to great democracy
2:04
if there
2:05
had not been a lot of investment in
2:06
upgrading and so the old buildings were
2:08
kind of retained
2:09
ready for the kind of the post iron
2:10
curtain revival and
2:12
an investment now i know that's true for
2:14
example of the petron tower
2:16
which was closed in 1979 for over a
2:18
decade
2:19
as it had fallen to disrepair and has
2:21
only in recent years been sort of
2:23
restored and reopened
2:25
it's noticeable how the local population
2:27
even the attractions across the area
2:29
make almost no reference
2:30
to the soviet era in the history of the
2:33
country in the history of the city
2:34
itself and it's something i'd actually
2:36
noticed years ago when i first visited
2:37
for work
2:38
and also in talking to local colleagues
2:41
people seem uncomfortable talking about
2:43
that particular part of their history
2:44
they seem to prefer to forget it and
2:46
focus on the very far past which is very
2:48
rich
2:49
the now and the future and that is
2:51
possibly understandable
2:53
now the old part of prague as i've
2:54
already mentioned is
2:56
just incredibly remarkable it's very
2:59
magical
3:00
and it is like stepping back in time
3:02
even though the streets are cobbled
3:04
throughout much of the old town
3:06
the other thing that struck me is how
3:09
small
3:10
in relative terms the historical and the
3:11
more tourist area of the city is
3:13
now this is great as a tourist because
3:15
it's very easy to walk around the city
3:17
and very easy to see pretty much
3:18
everything that you
3:20
may want to or need to it does though as
3:23
i've already mentioned make it quite
3:24
busy as all the tourists and sightseeing
3:26
visitors
3:27
are in this fairly compact area
3:30
but the good news is it also means that
3:32
in a weekend visit you know two three
3:34
day visit you can comfortably visit
3:36
and see the major attractions you need
3:37
to and should see without kind of
3:39
rushing around too crazily now the
3:41
center of prague was incredibly neat and
3:44
incredibly clean
3:45
it was something i noticed and you don't
3:47
seem to see a lot of people constantly
3:48
cleaning
3:49
but the city is really absolutely
3:51
immaculately
3:52
maintained it's clean it's neat it's
3:54
quite remarkable
3:56
now as i mentioned the city is packed
3:57
with sightseeing crowds and it was
3:59
interesting that there seemed to be a
4:00
lot of
4:01
young visitors of college sort of
4:02
university young travel age as well as a
4:04
lot of school trips actually
4:06
that may have been part of the the time
4:08
of the year but it really stood out the
4:10
city seemed to attract and appeal to a
4:12
fairly young crowd and i'm not sure if
4:14
that's its history
4:16
whether it's a trendy place to visit at
4:17
the moment or if there's a lot of sort
4:19
of inexpensive
4:20
traveler friendly accommodation and and
4:22
whatnot
4:24
one of the bizarre observation is the
4:26
amount of glassware shops that are dot
4:28
around the city selling these sort of
4:29
little blown glass ornaments and vases
4:32
they seem to be like a constant flow of
4:34
them through the through the area
4:36
and also i'm not sure why but i'm sure
4:39
there's a very good reason i didn't
4:40
quite get the bottom of that
4:42
there were also a lot of shops selling
4:43
puppets you know marinette kinds of kind
4:45
of
4:45
strings again they seem to be all over
4:47
the place and i guess
4:48
both of these have emerged to serve the
4:52
the tourist trade but both felt a little
4:54
bit tacky to be honest now easter is a
4:56
big thing in prague which is when i was
4:57
there
4:58
there's a large market in the old town
5:00
square and all over town they sell
5:02
easter eggs but unlike in the uk these
5:04
are not kind of
5:05
chocolate treat eggs they're actual
5:08
physical
5:08
eggs that are hollowed out and then very
5:11
intricately designed and they're quite
5:13
something
5:14
though you soon realize that this must
5:15
be a very large commercial enterprise as
5:17
although there are many designs pretty
5:19
much all the shops and even the stores
5:21
are selling the same ones
5:22
so they're very impressive but they are
5:25
not that personal or individual but
5:26
it did make me wonder what they first of
5:29
all do with huge amounts of egg they
5:30
must suck out of the shells because i
5:32
assume you can't get the whole yolks out
5:33
through the tiny holes
5:34
and then also how they managed to
5:35
actually carve and decorate them on such
5:37
a scale
5:38
i've never quite worked that one out but
5:40
and maybe i don't really need to
5:43
so what then are my tips for travellers
5:45
visiting prague
5:47
tours and what to see to us it's better
5:50
to do it yourself now unlike
5:52
most other major tourist cities you
5:54
don't have the usual open
5:55
air bus tour now this is partly i assume
5:58
because the main things that you need to
5:59
see
6:00
uh you can't get you on a bus and you
6:01
need to walk to anyway
6:03
now there are some tours that drive you
6:05
to some of the key places and then
6:06
escort you on foot into the various
6:08
areas
6:08
so they may be worthwhile if you're not
6:10
up for walking or you can't walk
6:12
or you don't work at the trams but
6:13
that's walking around is so key
6:15
there are also many walking tours and
6:17
walk into companies
6:19
that i think you could pretty much do
6:20
this by yourself and we saw loads and
6:22
loads of people
6:23
walking around clutching a prague
6:25
guidebook so they could get some of the
6:26
history in the background
6:27
but just doing it themselves and this
6:28
for me would be the best recommendation
6:30
assuming of course that you can handle
6:32
the walking now the must-do
6:34
sites and routes to see would be say on
6:36
day one or on route one you'd
6:38
walk across the charles bridge a very
6:40
famous bridge i'll talk about in a
6:41
second
6:42
you then follow through the old streets
6:44
into the old town square
6:46
and the second route or the second day
6:47
would be to go up to the castle explore
6:49
that for half a day
6:50
come back down the hill catch the tram
6:52
and visit the petron tower so let me
6:53
tell you a little bit more about
6:55
those attractions so the charles bridge
6:57
it dates back to
6:58
the 14th century it's one of the most
7:00
famous landmarks of the city it's
7:01
probably
7:02
one of the things that it's most famous
7:04
for it's a magnet for tourists
7:06
there are these very beautiful barricade
7:08
towers
7:09
on both sides of the bridge and then
7:11
there's very old and very complex
7:12
statues
7:13
dotted along it and there's small artist
7:16
stands selling pictures jewelry and such
7:18
like
7:18
the views on the bridge are great
7:20
they're stunning and there's great photo
7:22
opportunities
7:22
and actually on one side of the bridge
7:24
you also have the tourist office you
7:26
find it more about tours and leaflets
7:28
and that kind of
7:29
stuff the old town square so after
7:31
you've crossed the bridge you follow the
7:33
crowds
7:33
literally follow the grounds and they
7:35
weave through the narrow streets it's
7:36
beautiful
7:36
buildings shops etc you eventually come
7:39
to the large
7:40
old town square now just as you enter
7:42
the square is the famous
7:44
astronomical clock this is very famous
7:45
you can actually pay a fee
7:47
uh you know to climb around the tower
7:49
and it's quite amusing to watch
7:51
at the top of every hour when it sort of
7:53
performs as it were and chimes out
7:55
because huge crowds gather around the
7:56
tower and they all stare at it
7:58
and they all point the cameras in and
7:59
you actually probably get as interesting
8:01
pictures taking pictures of people
8:02
all staring at the tower now in easter
8:04
in the square
8:05
there's a very large fare as i mentioned
8:07
selling food drink there's a small stage
8:09
of entertainment
8:10
and around the square though there's
8:12
many restaurants of varying quality and
8:13
price because it is again
8:14
a very popular part of the city now
8:18
because it's such an old attraction
8:20
there are not only restaurants but
8:21
there's many shops another
8:23
smaller sort of interesting little
8:24
destination so for example
8:26
one of the more popular ones is the
8:27
chocolate museum and there's a sweet and
8:29
chocolate shop attached to it
8:31
now the museum itself has a fee to enter
8:33
but in the shop they do demonstrations
8:34
on making this kind of
8:35
the rock and the sort of hard sweets and
8:38
that attracts a really big audience
8:39
actually
8:40
it's quite entertaining to watch how
8:41
they do it all
8:43
the castle now the castle is a huge
8:45
complex
8:46
it looks over the city from the top of a
8:48
steep hill
8:50
and this complex is just quite something
8:52
it's it's a city within a city it's very
8:54
impressive and not surprising it's very
8:56
popular
8:57
we actually strolled up the steep hill
8:59
from at the glacier town square and that
9:01
was very nice of those little
9:02
shops and restaurants up the hill and
9:05
once you get the top of the hill there's
9:07
great views now you enter through these
9:09
really impressive gates and their guards
9:11
that of course people inevitably try and
9:13
make laughs when they're posed with them
9:15
but very impressive gates very striking
9:18
beautifully crafted buildings and then
9:20
you come to this large square
9:22
uh which is all surrounded by the
9:23
buildings and you have to get tickets
9:26
and the ticket thing is not very
9:27
efficient to be honest it's um
9:29
it's a little bit shambolic and part of
9:32
the problem is they take almost any
9:34
currency
9:34
and so they keep having to work out
9:36
rates and things now the problem is if
9:37
you want to hire an audio tool you have
9:39
to go to a different line for that
9:41
but anyway that's uh you just have to
9:43
put up with that the two main
9:45
tickets you can basically buy one which
9:47
lets you do pretty much all of the
9:48
buildings in the complex that are open
9:50
to the public
9:51
and one which is a slightly smaller one
9:52
where you go to five different buildings
9:54
that's the one that we actually chose
9:55
and that was probably plenty
