0:00
hi I'm Gary beverage and this is another
0:01
of my tips for travelers I'm currently
0:04
on a danube river cruise on viking river
0:06
cruises and i thought this would be a
0:08
great opportunity to talk to you about
0:10
the things that you really need to know
0:13
if you are a first-timer to river
0:15
cruising first of all river cruising is
0:18
very different to ocean cruising and
0:21
it's much closer to an escorted bus tour
0:23
around a particular region so it's a
0:25
much more curated experience with much
0:27
less choice and options your whole day
0:30
in the way it's planned is a much more
0:32
regimented and organized experience
0:35
similar to if you're going on a tour
0:37
around the region or a bus with a guide
0:39
you actually travel much shorter
0:42
distances than you would on an ocean
0:43
cruise as well so across a week you
0:45
might only travel a couple of hundred
0:47
whereas our ocean cruise of course you
0:49
may travel many hundreds of miles of
0:52
kilometers every single day as you move
0:54
around the different destinations so
0:56
it's a much more intensive look at a
0:58
particular region so it is a very
1:00
different experience don't think of it
1:02
as an ocean star cruise on a river
1:05
secondly the way that you choose a river
1:07
cruise line I think is very different
1:09
and it's very much around always how
1:11
you'd choose a hotel that you wanted to
1:13
stay at do you normally like to travel
1:15
in a three star four star or five star
1:18
hotel do you like to travel in a
1:20
traditional Dacor hotel or a very modern
1:23
contemporary hotel because in practice
1:25
river cruise ships are largely the same
1:27
and they largely have to be the same
1:30
because they have to be a certain length
1:31
or certain width and a certain height to
1:33
go along the rivers so as you see all
1:35
the different river cruise boats they
1:37
look incredibly similar from the outside
1:39
and their structure and their facilities
1:41
inside is also very very similar so
1:44
you're going to have normally a dining
1:46
room you can have a lounge
1:47
perhaps a small library some will have
1:50
fitness center some may have a second
1:52
dining room so you're not really
1:53
choosing a river cruise line based on
1:56
the facilities you're choosing it first
1:58
of all based on budget and style so do
2:00
you like a very plush five-star
2:02
experience and do you have the budget
2:03
for that or are you looking for
2:04
something much more on the value side
2:05
some more three stark so when you come
2:08
to choose a river cruise line you're
2:10
choosing it based on your style of trial
2:13
three four star five star travel your
2:15
budget and also the design and look of
2:17
the ship once you're on board
2:20
now the third really important thing
2:22
about river cruising is often when
2:23
people come to look at river cruising
2:25
they think it looks incredibly expensive
2:27
the river cruising is a relatively
2:28
expensive way to travel however you need
2:32
to look beyond the headline fare because
2:34
you'll find the river cruising is
2:35
largely all-inclusive so you'll normally
2:37
find on most cruise lines they have your
2:40
accommodation of a CD I have all your
2:41
dining options and they will normally
2:43
have at least one excursion included
2:46
within the fare wherever you go they
2:48
will have Wi-Fi included most of the
2:50
cruise lines will include wine or beer
2:52
with your lunch and your dinner you'll
2:55
have 24-hour tea and coffee making
2:57
facilities often with all snacks and
2:59
normally what's excluded are things like
3:00
gratuities obviously on board shopping
3:02
or if you do go for extra excursions
3:04
sometimes they may offer premium
3:05
excursions so for example on the cruise
3:07
that I was on we had the option of going
3:09
to a classical concert women vno so when
3:13
you look at the cost of a fare bear in
3:15
mind that a lot of the things that
3:16
you're going to pay extra if you go say
3:18
ocean cruising is included in the fare
3:20
people often think my goodness that's
3:21
quite expensive but look at the
3:23
inclusions the next key thing that I
3:25
think people coming to river cruising
3:27
for the first time should really focus
3:28
on when you look at which itinerary you
3:31
gonna do really focus on the places that
3:34
it goes to how long you're going to be
3:36
calling at them and also very
3:37
importantly take a look at the
3:39
excursions that are offered and
3:40
understand where they're going to take
3:42
you and what you're going to see are
3:43
they going to take you to all the big
3:45
really important must-see places also I
3:48
recommend that you understand to what
3:50
degree there is cultural immersion on
3:52
the cruise so some cruise lines will
3:55
make sure that every day there's a local
3:57
menu and they'll bring onboard local
3:59
entertainment so again using the example
4:01
of the cruise I'm on currently the
4:02
Viking Danube cruise every single day on
4:04
the menu there was a local menu choice
4:07
with a starter a main course and a
4:10
dessert which was specific to the very
4:12
specific town or place that were going
4:14
through and then they would bring
4:15
onboard entertainers from that region
4:17
who would do such singing dancing I have
4:20
been our other river cruises where
4:21
perhaps it has been less so because it's
4:24
special to say French cuisine and that's
4:26
keep having every day so very
4:28
importantly understand the degree of
4:30
cultural emotion and what the actual
4:31
enrichment program is onboard now my
4:35
opinion first time two cruises should
4:36
focus on two key rivers the Rhine and
4:39
the Danube now there are many many
4:41
rivers that you can cruise in around
4:43
Europe but the Rhine the Danube are the
4:45
two big classic ones so the Rhine is
4:47
fantastic because you get all the
4:48
stories and the beautiful castles
4:50
especially along of the world heritage
4:52
stretch of the Rhine River so the Rhine
4:54
is an absolute must do it's very rich in
4:57
beautiful castles and incredible scenery
5:00
then there's the Danube with a classic
5:01
being between Passau and Budapest which
5:03
takes you through some very beautiful
5:05
parts of the world but very importantly
5:07
you visit three critical capitals so you
5:09
will go to Vienna you'll go to browse
5:11
lava and you'll go to Budapest which of
5:14
those two my favourite it depends which
5:15
one I am currently on because I love
5:17
both of those itineraries the next thing
5:20
is a kind of watch out now I do have a
5:22
whole nother video which talks about
5:24
lots of a chance of a river cruising but
5:26
probably the biggest and most important
5:28
one of all is if your first time to
5:29
river cruising you need to understand
5:31
that water levels can play havoc with
5:33
your itinerary so either too much water
5:35
or too little water and you'll often
5:37
find there's times of the year or even
5:40
certain years when itineraries are just
5:43
thrown all over the place of example in
5:45
2018 there was a real problem with low
5:47
water and the river boats could not get
5:50
very far and sometimes people were being
5:52
bused to different excursions or even
5:54
changing ships to get them further down
5:55
the river so bear in mind although your
5:58
booking artillery the water levels could
5:59
completely throw that out of kilter now
6:01
clearly the cruise companies trying to
6:04
everything they can but there's nothing
6:06
they can do about water levels the next
6:08
key thing that a first-time river cruise
6:10
ernie's sort of stand is the season is
6:12
relatively limited so the season only
6:14
starts around about March April time and
6:17
goes on until about October time now
6:20
some cruises will keep running after
6:22
October particularly December for the
6:24
Christmas markets and some Christmas and
6:26
New Year's but basically between
6:28
December and March there's no River
6:32
cruise boats running in Europe a really
6:34
good time to go my opinion as a
6:36
first-timer is if you go around
6:39
about the may/june time and sort of
6:41
September it's a really great time to go
6:43
because it's not manically busy you know
6:45
these ships are all calling on the same
6:47
places and then you add all the
6:49
land-based or us on top but they can be
6:51
really really packed but you have pretty
6:53
good weather it's only quite bright and
6:55
it's not manically busy and the Fez will
6:57
also reflect that you'll find you're
6:58
probably going to get better value fare
7:00
when you think about planning if you're
7:02
considering a river cruise there's also
7:04
an important thing to note it is still
7:07
really a slightly older activity so
7:10
you're generally going to find it's
7:11
people 55 plus you can find lots of
7:13
people in their 60s and 70s doing river
7:15
cruising of course it is evolving is
7:17
changing there are some cruise companies
7:19
which are trying to encourage more
7:21
families so in the key summer periods
7:23
I'll do more family themed two cruises
7:25
and other cruise lines are trying to
7:26
introduce more themes whether it's wine
7:29
or arts or whatever to try attract a
7:31
more diverse audience but in practice
7:33
it's mostly people in their 50s 60s 70s
7:36
and above it is in my view very much an
7:39
adult rather than a family vacation
7:42
option most of the river cruises are
7:44
going to go to places which do have
7:45
historic or arts or a cultural Bend they
7:48
are getting more active so there's more
7:50
cycling and hiking but the excursions
7:53
are much more historical and cultural by
7:56
nature and there's lots of wine and food
7:58
integrated to that so it is very much in
8:01
my view an adult experience Viking for
8:03
example to Oman have decided to reflect
8:05
that and all of their cruises in fact
8:07
both river and ocean you have to be over
8:09
18 before you go on it now what about
8:11
solo traveling river cruising is still a
8:13
real challenge for solo travelers
8:15
because most cruise lines don't have
8:17
solar cabins they starting to toy with
8:19
those but generally speaking of your
8:21
solo traveler you're going to have to be
8:23
quite canny so do things like sign up
8:26
for the cruise lines that you're
8:28
interested in newsletters or talk to
8:30
your agent and find out when they're
8:32
doing promotions because some of them
8:33
will do in no single supplement
8:35
promotion or they'll do lower surcharges
8:37
but as a set of travel it is still a
8:39
real challenge most of the times of the
8:41
able to do the peak times the year
8:43
you'll find you're paying a surcharge of
8:47
you found these tips helpful about river
8:49
cruising I have many more videos and
8:51
tips and ship tours about river cruising
8:55
so why don't you take a look at some of
8:56
those to help understand river cruising
8:58
much more and of course please watch
9:00
many more of my tips or owners videos
9:02
they're designed to help you make the
9:04
most of your precious travel time and
9:05
money on land at sea and of course the
