0:00
what are the biggest trends in cruising
0:02
for 2020 I'm Gary Bainbridge this is
0:05
another of my cruising tips for
0:07
travelers I want to give you my
0:08
predictions on what I think the six big
0:11
trends that you're gonna experience in
0:13
cruising in 2020 are starting with this
0:18
without shadow of a doubt we're going to
0:19
keep seeing the continued growth of
0:21
cruising both in terms of passenger
0:24
trips and also the expansion of ships
0:27
it's predicted that there will be 32
0:31
million passenger journeys in 2020 which
0:35
is up from 30 million in 2019 but
0:37
importantly that growth is being fueled
0:39
by a couple of things first of all there
0:41
are more ships coming into service every
0:44
year there are loads of them in 2020
0:46
there are going to be 19 new ships
0:49
coming into service across a wide range
0:51
of cruise lines including Carnival
0:53
celebrity Crystal Cruises cost MSC
0:56
Cruises P&O Cruises Poland Regent Seven
1:00
Seas Royal Caribbean saga silver sea so
1:04
many new ships coming which of course
1:05
gets a lot of excitement and people
1:07
trying cruise ships particularly some of
1:09
them are pretty innovative the other
1:11
thing that's going to drive it a lot is
1:13
Expedition cruising there's a great big
1:15
growth in expedition cruising and
1:17
there's new ships coming as well as new
1:19
itineraries from the cruise lines like
1:22
silver sea pond on scenic crystal lynn
1:26
all of them have new ships coming along
1:28
and there's just a lot of energy a lot
1:30
of noise about expedition cruising
1:32
that's going to place like Arctic
1:34
Antarctica and some of the more exotic
1:36
places in the world so that's a big
1:37
driver the other big driver I think of
1:40
the growth increasing is going to be
1:42
more more focus on adults and on solar
1:44
travelers so the last couple of years a
1:46
lot of the growth increasing has come
1:48
from attracting families on to cruising
1:51
as a great value proposition also
1:53
getting more multi-generational
1:55
obviously because traditionally cruising
1:56
has been a little bit older and so
1:58
encouraging the sort of grandparents to
2:00
get their kids and their kids kids onto
2:02
cruises so that's been a big push and a
2:05
real big focus for the cruising however
2:06
what I think we're seeing more and more
2:08
is cruise lines on to chase the next
2:10
generation so they're tracing the
2:12
Millennials the generation air
2:13
who are starting to become more
2:14
interested in cruising and we've seen
2:16
some developments in that area so for
2:18
example virgin voyages with their
2:20
scarlet lady which is gonna be a teen
2:22
focus trying to be very youthful ii
2:24
driven we're seeing even for example in
2:27
the UK mirela cruises when they got a
2:28
new ship they made it adults only
2:30
focused and of course other cruise lines
2:32
like saga which are bringing new ships
2:34
on board which are focused on the adult
2:36
markets so i think we're going to see a
2:38
lot of focus on adult cruising as
2:41
there's an opportunity to have ships and
2:43
itineraries and routes which cater for
2:45
couples particular young couples who
2:47
don't want to be surrounded by families
2:48
so i think we're definitely gonna see in
2:50
2020 lots of action happening around
2:52
those key areas the second big trend
2:55
that i think is emerging and going to
2:58
become more and more prevalent to 2020
3:00
is the bundling and getting rid of some
3:02
of those extra costs and bundling them
3:04
into the fare there's a lot of pushback
3:06
around the extra charges of things like
3:08
chewties Wi-Fi because of course as you
3:11
get more and more younger people and
3:12
more more connected people on board
3:14
they're used to just having Wi-Fi as
3:15
included because they even go to
3:17
Starbucks or wherever and it's having
3:19
Wi-Fi easily accessible so we're seeing
3:21
lots of pushback to the extra charges
3:23
whether it's especially dining Wi-Fi
3:26
which is all those kind of things and
3:27
what I've seen is a couple of really
3:29
interesting things that make me feel
3:30
that during 2020 and beyond we're gonna
3:32
see fares becoming more bundled or
3:34
inclusive virgin he's making a lot of
3:37
ways when they launch if you excuse the
3:39
pun because when they come aboard their
3:41
fares are than they include gratuities
3:42
then can include a lot of basic drinks
3:44
you know some soft drinks juices coffees
3:48
they're going to include Wi-Fi they can
3:51
include all of the special a dining so
3:52
dining on all of their venues is
3:53
included in the price so bundling more
3:55
and more in that's gonna make a lot of
3:57
people I think in the industry watch how
3:58
that goes the other thing that I've
4:00
observed is we're starting to see some
4:01
cruise lines particularly in the UK
4:04
starting to bundle things in more so in
4:07
the last year pno of billed patooties
4:10
mirela have an all-inclusive option
4:14
where everything is included within the
4:16
except for excursions so we're starting
4:19
to see that the other thing I found very
4:20
interesting as I was booking
4:22
various cruises I'm doing in 2020 pretty
4:26
bundled fares in some way so all the
4:29
creases I'm going on have offers and
4:31
deals when I booked which bundle things
4:34
in so for example I'm going on a
4:35
Norwegian Cruise in the Caribbean and
4:38
that included special a dining Wi-Fi
4:40
gratuities also things included Oceania
4:43
obviously have their Oh life fairs where
4:45
you can choose to take excursions drinks
4:47
packages or onboard credit ponent
4:50
and other cruises that I've booked that
4:52
in bundles pretty much everything in so
4:55
I'm seeing more and more that starting
4:56
to happen and when I looked at a lot of
4:58
the offers and deals what used to happen
5:00
is a lot of them we're offering things
5:01
like upgrades but I'm seeing more and
5:03
more now they're bundled in so for
5:05
example another cruise that I've booked
5:06
with celebrity again pretty much
5:09
everything was bundled in through that
5:11
offer so it's either going to become
5:13
formal or you're gonna find more and
5:14
more you can buy deals and get deals
5:16
which have things more bundle I think
5:18
that's have become a big trend
5:20
particularly to try and attract more
5:21
people that are used to just having
5:23
these things all included
5:24
so the third trend is linked to that and
5:27
so what Cruise Lines I think are going
5:28
to start to do during the course of 2020
5:31
and give me examples where they're
5:32
already doing that is as they bundle
5:34
more things into the fare they need to
5:36
find new things that they can charge you
5:39
once you get onboard to generate revenue
5:41
the most obvious of these is the pay to
5:44
get access so traditionally speaking if
5:46
you're in a suite you'd get all sorts of
5:48
things included priority disembarkation
5:51
embarkation perhaps priority seating in
5:53
the restaurant you might get some meals
5:55
bundled in and some of the special
5:56
dining so we're seeing that start to
5:58
happen more and more as cruise lines are
6:00
looking for new ways of charging people
6:02
so for example Carnival have on many of
6:05
their cruisers particularly the
6:06
Carribean faster to the fun program
6:08
which you pay a premium for and that
6:11
gives you things like invocation get
6:13
your luggage quicker all that kind of
6:15
stuff then you have Royal Caribbean
6:17
which has the the key which has even
6:19
more included where you get your
6:21
priority and vocation to some vocation
6:22
but does include an invocation data
6:24
Sandbach head shouldn't a meal priority
6:26
seating in the restaurants and all sorts
6:28
of others benefits and features so
6:30
that's a new way of getting people to
6:32
pay extra things and I think we're gonna
6:34
see more and more people searching out
6:37
ways that they can get people to charge
6:40
as they bundle more things into the fair
6:42
I think that's going to be a big trend
6:43
coming in 2020 the next trend is one
6:47
around the changing the way that cruise
6:50
lines call on ports one of the big
6:53
challenges as cruises become more more
6:54
popular is over tourism and places
6:56
getting really really crowded and
6:57
certainly been in some of the key places
6:59
in the Caribbean or in the Mediterranean
7:01
these places are getting crazy crazy
7:03
busy so cruise lines are increasingly
7:05
having to look at how to improve the
7:07
whole experience boats for the cities
7:09
the towns the ports and also the
7:11
passengers so I think we're going to see
7:12
more and more stuff and it starts
7:14
happening already so for example we're
7:16
seeing more more cruise lines offer
7:17
longer stay so overnight stays for
7:20
example this also means that they can
7:22
then arrive a little bit later so some
7:24
of the ships might be there earlier
7:25
people going for excursions earlier they
7:27
arrive a little bit later because
7:28
they're staying overnight about staying
7:30
to lunchtime the next day so we're going
7:32
to see a lot of that happening the other
7:33
thing that we're seeing happening linked
7:35
that is excursions and nature excursions
7:38
are changing where they're looking at
7:39
putting on more and more excursions to
7:40
encourage people to get further out so
7:42
of course the big incentive for cities
7:45
and towns and regions is you're trying
7:47
to push more money and people further
7:49
out so they share the benefit of the
7:51
cruise industry so I think you're going
7:52
to see more and more excursions which
7:53
are trying to get people away from the
7:55
crowded areas the other thing that we're
7:57
seeing increasingly is some of the ports
7:59
are very congested so whether it's
8:01
Barcelona or Venice or even Southampton
8:04
in the UK just using some examples in
8:06
Europe and what we're starting to see
8:08
increasingly is looking at alternative
8:10
port so in Venice you know moving to a
8:12
port further away from Venice
8:14
Barcelona's looking an example in the UK
8:17
Portsmouth are trying to attract more
8:19
cruise ships which is just a little bit
8:20
down from Southampton Dover is trying to
8:22
attract more cruise ships so starting to
8:24
see actually pushing where the ships
8:26
leave from depart from into more varied
8:29
ports closeby but just spreading some of
8:32
the load I think we going to see more
8:33
and more of this happening as they try
8:34
to figure out how do they stagger and
8:36
reduce the impact of cruise and cruise
8:39
passengers ramming into places and we're
8:41
gonna see that so much more of course
8:43
one of the obvious trends is we're going
8:46
to see more and more focus on the
8:48
environment both from a PR perspective
8:49
but also from a practical perspective as
8:51
cruising grows and as
8:53
the whole attitude of passengers
8:55
government's regulatory bodies focuses
8:57
on the environment the cruise industry
8:58
has to change they've set a target of
9:00
reducing emissions for example in this
9:03
decade by 40% so for example what
9:06
they're doing is looking for alternative
9:07
fossil fuels so almost half of all new
9:11
builds now use LNG liquefied natural gas
9:14
which is dramatically better we're
9:16
seeing low sulfur fuels being introduced
9:19
there's even some experimentation to go
9:21
on smaller expedition vehicles with
9:23
hybrid and battery and biofuel so a real
9:26
big push to try and reduce the
9:29
environmental footprint and the carbon
9:31
footprint of cruising a huge push on
9:33
recycling removal of single plastics
9:35
across cruise ships of recycling better
9:37
just really looking at the whole waste
9:39
waste management wastewater how they
9:41
deal with waste so I think there's going
9:43
to be a huge amount of push on
9:44
environment partly because they have to
9:46
but also I think passengers sending
9:48
already and through 2020 are going to
9:50
become more and more demanding and I
9:52
think I started choosing cruise lines
9:53
that they see and ships that they see
9:55
that have a better environmental
9:57
footprint then the past
9:58
another example is increasingly ports
10:00
are putting in shoreside power so cruise
10:03
ships can actually plug themselves in to
10:05
the power grid so they're not in towns
10:07
pumping out stuff into the air and of
10:10
course ports are being really pushed by
10:12
the residents in those areas to improve
10:14
the air quality things like that I think
10:16
we're going to see much more high
10:17
profile and much more pressure on cruise
10:20
lines to address the other thing I think
10:22
we're going to keep seeing as a trend is
10:24
this obsession that cruise lines have
10:26
with brand partnerships every time I go
10:28
on a cruise I no matter which cruise on
10:30
it is whether it be not before or not I
10:32
just see more and more brand
10:34
partnerships popping up the seas because
10:35
real obsession with giving people in the
10:38
comment board recognized brands so for
10:40
example I'll give example when I was on
10:42
the Seabourn cruise recently they had a
10:44
partnership with Tim Rice to do shows
10:47
that a partnership with Thomas Keller -
10:49
on the food they had a partnership with
10:51
molten brown on toiletries that a
10:53
partnership with dr. Weil on wellness
10:56
that a partner with a guy called Brian
10:57
van Flandern aren't drinks they're a
10:59
partnership with UNESCO and excursions
11:01
and every time I go on a cruise I see
11:03
more and more these brown partnerships
11:04
and also linked to that is branded
11:07
more well-known brands for land
11:10
appearing up on ships as dining venues
11:13
for example so there seems to be that
11:15
obsession and I think that's going to
11:16
keep growing in 2020 those are
11:19
predictions of some of the big trends in
11:21
2020 if you have any thoughts love to
11:23
hear them but remember I have loads more
11:26
videos packed full of cruising tips and
11:28
advice so why don't you watch another
11:30
one of them right now
