Greece and the Greek Islands is a wonderful cruising destination, with many cruises starting and ending in Athens and Venice, known as Eastern Mediterranean Cruises. But when you are looking at which cruise line and itinerary to go on your Greek Islands cruise vacation, make sure you are going to the best, most beautiful and interesting islands and ports. Many only go to a few and very busy ones, skipping some of the more appealing ones. In this video I recommend the best islands and ports you should make sure your cruise goes to and what to do on your day in port, including those the cruises often call on when starting or ending in Venice. These include Athens, Katakolon, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Patmos, Gythion, Corfu, Kotor and Dubrovnik.
Note: I travelled as a guest of Titan Travel on their Italian Lakes and Greek Islands cruise trip before making this video. Find out more about similar trips with them at https://www.titantravel.co.uk/holiday-types/ocean-cruising/ocean-cruise-lines/azamara

hi I'm Gary beverage and this is another
0:02
of my tips for Travers in this episode
0:04
I'm taking a look at the 10 best things
0:06
to see and do if you're on Adriatic and
0:09
Greek islands cruise it's a magnificent
0:12
part of the world and most of the
0:14
cruisers will start at either Venice or
0:16
in Athens and travel Jean Athens and
0:18
Venice means you take in parts of
0:20
mainland Greece the Greek islands and a
0:22
couple of stops on the Adriatic coast
0:24
and also if you're looking at booking a
0:26
cruise these are the places that you
0:28
need to make sure are on your itinerary
0:30
to have the best way of seeing and doing
0:33
this part of the world make sure you
0:35
don't miss any of these incredible
0:36
places let's start in Athens so you're
0:39
either going to embark or disembark in
0:41
Athens make sure that you go to the
0:43
Acropolis this is an outcrop overlooking
0:46
the city on the top are the ruins of
0:48
most magnificent temples the most famous
0:51
of which being the Parthenon which is a
0:53
temple which was created and built in
0:56
the honour of the goddess Athena who's
0:58
seen as the patron of Athens and really
1:00
where they got their name from also
1:02
nearby on the propolis is the new
1:03
acropolis museum a massively complex
1:06
with remarkable artifacts if you're
1:08
going on a cruise that starts winds in
1:11
Athens make sure you build in time to go
1:13
to the Acropolis since we've been
1:15
talking about important archaeological
1:17
areas what I'm going to do is talk about
1:19
some of the really other in great and
1:21
important archaeological sites to see
1:23
one of these is in a kettle colon and
1:26
the place you go to is Olympia it's
1:28
about an hour or so from cattle colon if
1:30
you go on a cruise that's going to catch
1:33
cholera and make sure you go to Olympia
1:34
Olympia is the site of the original
1:37
Olympic Games and many of the buildings
1:39
were built in the honour of the god Zeus
1:42
and it is a huge sprawling complex
1:45
including the huge big stadium where the
1:49
race as many of the races were run it's
1:52
a fascinating complex and there to
1:54
museums nearby the one we assumed that I
1:56
would really make sure you get to which
1:58
is not far from the entrance into
2:00
Olympia is the museum which tells you
2:02
the whole history of Olympia make sure
2:04
you go to Olympia it is absolutely
2:06
magnificent another great place to go if
2:10
you are interested in culture and art--
2:12
is make sure that your
2:13
Cruz is stopping in Crete and ideally
2:16
calling at the port of Heraklion it's
2:18
the closest to what's known as the
2:20
palace of canosa snout the palace of
2:22
colossus is again another big sprawling
2:24
complex some of it has she been
2:25
reconstructed and it ready was deserted
2:28
at the end of the Bronze Age it was the
2:30
center of the Minoans and it became very
2:32
famous for a legend about the Minotaur
2:34
which allegedly lived in the labyrinth
2:36
underneath the Palace of Colossus but
2:39
it's a beautiful place to visit
2:40
religious history and story it's not
2:42
known why it was deserted when it was
2:44
such a major structure but it's felt
2:46
that was probably there's lots of
2:47
volcanic activity and also lots of
2:49
battles which probably drove the people
2:50
out so those are some really important
2:52
historical sites if you're interested in
2:54
that side of the Greek islands my next
2:57
two suggestions are round 2 really
2:59
famous and iconic islands the first of
3:01
which is Santorini Santorini is
3:03
absolutely fascinating because it is
3:05
created by a lots of volcanic activity
3:08
and so you have these massive 300 meter
3:11
high cliffs and perch across the top of
3:13
them are the towns now when you actually
3:16
call into Santorini
3:18
you are likely to be docked outside the
3:21
main town which is known as fira and you
3:23
can then either walk up or get a donkey
3:25
ride up or you can wait for the cable
3:28
car and wind lots of cruise ships and it
3:30
can be very busy but I really recommend
3:32
you do though is actually head to the
3:34
other town which is called Oya Oya is a
3:37
much more beautiful town very easy way
3:38
of doing that when you get onto the
3:40
dockside you'll find a number of votes
3:42
there which will do a shuttle service so
3:44
they will take you from the dockside in
3:46
fira about a 15-minute drive to Oya
3:49
they'll have a bus which takes you up
3:50
the hill into oil or is where you're
3:52
going to get those famous and classical
3:54
sites of century if you want the classic
3:56
pictures of centrally this is the place
3:58
to go oh yeah from there they normally
4:00
include a bus which will take you back
4:02
to the town of fira which you can then
4:03
explore get the cable car down or walk
4:06
down or get a donkey ride down we
4:09
actually walk down it's about 800
4:10
something steps it's not a bad walk down
4:12
the second really famous and iconic
4:14
Island is that of Mykonos and Mykonos
4:17
town one of the great things to do in
4:19
Mykonos town it's to stroll through the
4:20
little winding streets there's lots of
4:22
really you know complex little winding
4:24
streets and it's full of little
4:25
boutiques and shops and rest
4:27
Janson bars and it really is quite
4:29
magnificent many people walk through the
4:31
old town to head towards the windmills
4:34
which are the famous and iconic
4:35
excitement and picture that everyone
4:37
wants to get Mykonos is really
4:38
fascinating in the 70s and 80s it was a
4:41
really important and vibrant place it
4:44
was attract lots of celebrities
4:46
it reportedly already caught on because
4:48
an ASUS took Jackie there and they
4:50
really loved it there and it also then
4:53
became a big center for the gay culture
4:55
and gay holidays he sort of waned a
4:57
little bit in the 90s and the early
4:58
2000s but it's really come back and it's
5:00
again a very vibrant and trendy place to
5:02
go so Santorini making us a great place
5:04
to go there can be very very busy if
5:07
there's lots of cruise ships in now to
5:09
slightly more unusual islands that I
5:11
really loved and I would recommend when
5:13
you're looking at a cruise try and make
5:15
sure that these are included the first
5:17
of which is Patmos now Patmos is a real
5:20
quiet island and you normally attend are
5:23
there only the smaller ships come in and
5:25
you then head from scarlet which is a
5:28
town on the bottom you head up the hill
5:30
to hear if you're really energetic can
5:32
walk I should recommend it's much better
5:33
to get a taxi out there because it's
5:34
really steep can then go to the
5:36
monastery of st. John inside there they
5:38
have some original scrolls from the
5:40
Bible but it's also really well known
5:42
for the cave of Sir John Rogers further
5:45
down the hill although a lot of people
5:47
like to go there but are kind of
5:48
disappointed when they go there the cave
5:49
is where John had the revelation and saw
5:53
Jesus and he wrote the book of
5:55
revelations which is the last book in
5:56
the New Testament so it's a very popular
5:58
place to come for pilgrimages it's a
6:01
very beautiful place and the town is
6:02
very lovely the island of Patmos is a
6:04
great one to include another island
6:07
which is very fascinating is the island
6:08
of get on get on again the smaller ships
6:11
tend to cruise there they normally will
6:13
tender you in although sometimes one of
6:15
the ships can dock getting on is a very
6:17
beautiful town they have lots of
6:19
dockside and Harborside restaurants
6:22
fantastic bakeries and its really great
6:24
place to hang out but the thing I
6:26
recommend you do is head out to the
6:29
Nevada cave at deira it's about a
6:32
40-minute drive so you may want to book
6:33
a excursion through the Cruise Line
6:36
these caves are absolutely fascinating
6:37
they're only discovered in 1949 and
6:39
there are vast underground
6:40
caves since you go a little boat trip
6:42
which will take about half an hour
6:44
winding its way through the caves it's
6:46
quite an enclosed space so if you're
6:48
claustrophobic not the best thing to do
6:50
that it is absolutely fascinating
6:52
another great place to go to is Corfu
6:55
Kaufer is much more of a land-based
6:57
tourist island but it's a great place to
6:59
go the hop-on hop-off bus and you can
7:02
head out and explore the island
7:04
particular head away from the old town
7:06
more towards the beach areas and some
7:08
great places we can go swimming so for
7:09
example we went swimming at the base of
7:12
the old fortress with magnificent views
7:14
really really quite something if you are
7:16
going on of this sort of eastern
7:17
Mediterranean cruises which either end
7:19
or start in Venice you will also call on
7:22
another reports along the Adriatic coast
7:24
the two most famous of which are kotor
7:27
montenegro and Dubrovnik in Croatia
7:29
Cotto is a magnificent and beautiful
7:32
place to call on it so when you look at
7:34
our 10 Ares I really recommend you
7:35
include one that has kotor on it's a bit
7:38
like cruising into the norwegian fjords
7:40
if these beautiful mountains on either
7:42
side of beautiful bays you sell quite a
7:44
long way inland and the old town of
7:46
kotor is very charming it's quite small
7:49
it's a walled city a very easy to stroll
7:51
around lots of interesting shops but one
7:53
of the things I recommend you do if
7:54
you've got a bit of energy and fitness
7:56
is to climb up the massive mountain
8:00
behind Kotal it's over a thousand steps
8:03
so it you need to be relatively fits a
8:05
head up there but the views are absolute
8:07
magnificent looking back across the bay
8:09
is Dubrovnik is of course a very famous
8:12
city and in some ways it's becoming
8:13
almost over busy with tourists fans of
8:16
Game of Thrones will know Dubrovnik as
8:18
when the early part of the series
8:20
Dubrovnik was used for part of Game of
8:22
Thrones the old walled city is very
8:24
beautiful you can walk right along the
8:26
old walls really really a magnificent
8:28
you can head up on the cable car and get
8:30
great views of Dubrovnik but starting
8:32
around the old time city if you go on a
8:34
walking tour and find out about all the
8:36
different churches and the stories of
8:38
Dubrovnik absolutely fascinating of
8:40
course if you're starting only in Venice
8:42
make sure that you do spend time in
8:44
Venice and have whole videos dedicated
8:45
to finding out things about Venice if
8:48
you're heading on an eastern
8:49
Mediterranean cruise or a cruise that
8:51
includes the Greek islands these are the
8:52
things and the
8:53
and the places that I strongly recommend
8:56
you when you look at a itinerary make
8:58
sure that all of or many of these places
9:01
are included a lot of the cruisers will
9:03
only call on the really big islands so
9:06
Mykonos or Santorini and they will miss
9:09
out some of the other islands which are
9:10
much more fascinating you won't get the
9:12
true Greek experience hope you find that
9:14
helpful if you did I always have a video
9:16
full of tips and advice if you're
9:18
looking or thinking of going on a Greek
9:20
and Greek island cruise 11 if you watch
9:23
many more of my tips of travelers videos
9:25
and they will help you make much more of
9:27
your very precious travel time
