Exploring Romantic Rhine River Valley Germany. The 8 Must-see Places, Castles, Monuments And Sights
Jan 29, 2025
Come explore the must-see sights in the Romantic Rhine Valley along the Rhine River, specifically the 67 kilometres between Rudesheim and Koblenz that is the UNESCO World Heritage Site called the "Upper Middle Rhine Valley". Lots of castles, fortresses, monuments, quaint towns, incredible scenery and (of course) the Rhine River. We go on a Rhine boat trip which includes the Loreley Rock, and then visit the Niderwald Monument, Oberwesel, Rheinfels and Stolzenfels Castles before calling in at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and Deutsches Eck.

join me as we explore a section of the
0:02
Rhine which is a UNESCO World Heritage
0:04
Site hi I'm Gary beverage of tips for
0:07
travelers 67 kilometers between
0:09
rudesheim and Coblentz full of castles
0:12
quaint villages history and beautiful
0:15
scenery and it's the unesco world
0:17
heritage site it's known as the upper
0:19
middle rhine valley so what are the
0:21
things that you should absolutely do now
0:22
the first thing I recommend you do is
0:24
actually get onto the water and get a
0:25
sense of the lay of the land so the
0:28
series of great boat trips who take
0:30
about two hours that run between
0:31
rudesheim and end in a place called sant
0:34
gore and something goranson you drift
0:37
along the river and you pass up to 18
0:41
castles and fortresses there is
0:43
multilingual commentary so there's
0:45
English is French the Spanish Italian
0:47
Japanese they explain to you the
0:49
different castles you've seen the
0:50
different fortresses some of the history
0:53
the struggles and battles over the
0:55
centuries that happen along the stretch
0:57
of the Rhine the boat actually stops a
0:59
number of these very beautiful quaint
1:01
towns where a peasant was neither
1:02
embarked or disembark gives you a real
1:05
sense of just how concentrated and
1:07
significant the stretch of the Rhine is
1:09
and it helps better understand why it
1:11
became a UNESCO site it's quite
1:12
magnificent because in addition to
1:14
incredible scenery you just see castle
1:16
after castle after castile let you get
1:18
to see River cruise boats you get to see
1:20
cargo boats and you get a real
1:21
appreciation for just how important the
1:24
Rhine is also from a commercial
1:25
perspective now the reason that many
1:28
people actually do this trip is to see
1:31
the Lorelei a big craggy rock it's over
1:33
130 meters high and it's a very
1:36
significant part of the Rhine because
1:37
it's where the Rhine is at its narrowest
1:39
and its deepest so it used to be very
1:41
treacherous part of the river and
1:43
there's a fable and story in fact a song
1:46
all about the siren that would be right
1:48
on top of this rock jeff beautiful
1:50
golden hair and she would sing and
1:52
distract sailors and they would
1:54
eventually ruin and wreck their boats on
1:56
the rocks below
1:57
once you get to some goranson what I
1:59
recommend is actually head back to
2:01
varnish I'm on the train it's only about
2:03
a 5-minute walk from where the boat
2:05
leaves you and only takes half an hour
2:07
on the train back to rudesheim the next
2:10
thing I recommend you do is head up
2:12
the cable car to an incredible memorial
2:14
the near de valdon Kemal or the knee
2:17
revolt memorial as you head up you get
2:19
magnificent views of the Rhine value
2:22
once you get up to the top there is
2:24
beautifully maintained gardens the
2:26
memorial itself is phenomenal it was
2:28
actually built to commemorate the
2:29
unification of Germany in 1871 now on
2:32
top of the stone structure is the
2:34
Magnificent a very dramatic ten and a
2:36
half metre statue of the female figure
2:38
called Germania underneath the memorial
2:40
is a great viewing platform beautiful
2:42
views you can then spend time strolling
2:44
around the park before you get back on
2:46
that cable car head back down into the
2:49
Shimon now once you're back down in
2:51
rudesheim there's a very important place
2:52
to go and this is called the Drossel
2:54
gasa it's listed as one of the hundred
2:56
top one of the things you should see
2:58
it's a very narrow street it's only a
3:00
hundred and forty-four meters long it's
3:01
packed full of crafts shops wine shops
3:03
because the region saw facility very
3:05
well known for wine restaurants there's
3:07
really interesting buildings lots of
3:09
Gaza is a really popular place to go
3:11
it's also a great place to go if you
3:13
want to get some really traditional
3:14
German food or wine or beer it just
3:17
really is a magnificent place to go from
3:19
there I would recommend that you then
3:21
head to your next stop which is over
3:23
vessel now our vessel roughly sort of in
3:26
the midpoint along the stretch of the
3:27
UNESCO World Heritage Site it built two
3:31
and a half kilometers of walls around it
3:33
and the wars were anything between six
3:35
to 16 meters high they are the best
3:38
preserved fortresses and walls of its
3:41
kind within Germany it had 22 towers and
3:44
16 of them have survived many of those
3:46
16 remaining towers you can actually
3:48
climb up the towers and from the top you
3:50
get great views above vessel for me was
3:53
a really significant place because of
3:54
those walls it's a great place to sort
3:57
of be based at to explore other parts I
3:59
would then head off towards complaints
4:01
and go and see a couple of castles that
4:02
you will not have seen on the boat tour
4:04
the first of them is near Sand core and
4:06
it's called the rheinfels castle and the
4:08
reason I chose this castle is it is the
4:11
largest
4:12
fortifications of its kind on the Rhine
4:14
a big part of it are actually ruins it's
4:16
a very dramatic place with beautiful big
4:19
thick walls there's also great Museum
4:21
within the actual old part of rheinfels
4:24
car
4:25
on my the old turrets you can look down
4:26
across and gore the Lorelei and some
4:29
chorus and so again magnificent views
4:31
from this really really important and
4:33
really significant to Castle the second
4:35
castle I recommend is a castle called
4:37
stolen fells castle which is quite near
4:39
Koblenz the reason I chose this castle
4:42
is because I like many of the other
4:43
castles on the Rhine this is very gothic
4:45
in nature and it's quite a modern castle
4:47
relative to the other castles King
4:49
Frederick William the fourth of prussia
4:51
commissioned the current castle as a
4:53
summer residence and was built in the
4:55
19th century between 1836 and 1842
4:58
beautiful gardens and certainly as you
5:00
continuing a journey towards Koblenz
5:02
these are two great castles along the
5:04
way to stop at the last stop and the end
5:07
of the UNESCO World Heritage Site which
5:09
is the city of Coblenz
5:10
and there's two really important things
5:12
to see here the first of these is
5:14
reached by this very beautiful and
5:17
modern cable car the fortress of
5:19
ehrenbreitstein so the fortress stands
5:22
118 meters above the Rhine fortunes
5:24
itself is humongous it was built to
5:27
ensure that no one could ever take this
5:29
fortress as big thick walls which was
5:31
designed to take a big battering and
5:33
inside there is walls within walls
5:35
sections of them in sections and one of
5:37
the big highlights is to this plaza area
5:40
whereas a viewing platform you get to
5:42
look down where the mussel River meets
5:44
the Rhine River that view is absolutely
5:46
magnificent now if you don't want to pay
5:48
to go into the fortress but you still
5:49
want to get the view in 2011 this
5:51
viewing platform was built the view is
5:53
not as good by any stretch I don't think
5:55
it as the one from the fortress but this
5:57
is another option next thing to see head
5:59
back down on the cable car and a short
6:01
walk away is the deutsches Eck or German
6:04
corner it's 37 meters high and the top
6:07
40 metres of it is a statue of the first
6:11
emperor of Germany Kaiser vilem the
6:13
first during world war ii the statue on
6:15
our table was actually destroyed in just
6:16
the plinth part was left so the statue
6:19
the top was only replaced in the 1990s
6:22
after Germany reunited this is a
6:25
remarkable 67 killing me to stretch of
6:28
the Rhine if you go on a Ryan cruise you
6:31
pass through this area you get a glimpse
6:33
of it you get a feel from it but
6:34
hopefully as you've seen you're getting
6:35
onto land and really exploring this
6:38
place
6:38
there is so much to see now clearly you
6:40
could spend ages visiting if you enjoy
