Hello plant people how are you guys doing today if you're new around here my name is Ashley and I like to take science and apply it to all things plants and today's video we're talking about sprouts versus micro greens I grow both but I'm gonna help you guys decide what setup you want to go with the intent of this video is to ultimately help you guys save money on the grocery bill inflation in Canada and I'm sure the US is the same whole of the world the same eating healthy is expensive and I'm
0:29
Personally on a journey to try to heal my body here in the last two months. I got some crazy
0:37
Medical exam done And the results are not good. That's what it comes down to
0:43
So my goal is to try to heal myself with food because I'm a huge believer in that
0:52
Medical doctors, you know when you ask them like what can I eat or what can I do
0:56
do they don't really give you much other than pills in the Canadian health system anyways I
1:02
don't know about other healthcare systems so but I believe that food can heal you and so I'm on this
1:09
journey to try to do that it's it's woman's stuff we'll just leave it at that but regardless I am
1:17
eating microgreens and inflation has to do with this my health journey has to do with this and
1:23
ultimately getting you know three heads of romaine lettuce that last me three
1:30
days because that's literally how much of the stuff I eat is junk and no other
1:35
words for that it's expensive it's somewhere around seven or eight dollars
1:42
for three heads here in Canada which comes out to ultimately like two dollars
1:48
and 30 ish cents per romaine head which is ridiculous in my opinion thank you inflation
1:57
i'm gonna show you guys how i'm saving money how i'm um actually you know producing healthy organic
2:02
food for less now i have all my indoor setups uh going i'm gonna do a separate video on those so i
2:08
have this little herb garden here going and then i have actually my whole grow tent in the basement
2:14
tons of hydroponics going on tons of in soil different price points that I'm gonna walk you guys through here
2:21
Once things start growing and I can actually weigh the pros and cons between all of them
2:25
I have a few different setups. I have those vivos and deep water cultures
2:30
I have my simple root farm trickle system and then I also have like bottom
2:36
Fed kind of bucket systems as well And so I want to walk you through kind of all those different price points, but
2:42
let's get into which one you should choose because ultimately there is a
2:46
small startup cost and by small I mean less than $10 but if you are working on
2:51
an extreme budget and you want to choose sprouts versus micro grains I want to
2:56
walk you through that from a production standpoint not from a health
3:01
perspective because while I've researched the health perspective I've you know done my due diligence on which one I think is better I'm not in health
3:12
experts who do not ask me I mean I wouldn't be in the situation where I'm
3:16
trying to heal my body about with a health expert am I right so um this is
3:20
sprouts so the difference between sprouts is this is sprouts and this is
3:25
my cook greens so these are radishes and these are brussel low broccoli sprouts so
3:34
sprouts are when you eat the root the stem the leaves and the seed and micro
3:40
greens is when you just eat the stem and the leaf and you would leave behind the root and you know portion of the stem this can obviously be composted it can be fed to chickens if you have them saskatoon does not allow chickens so that is not an option for me
3:57
but regardless they can be repurposed and so there are some differences between the two
4:04
i find that sprouts are a little bit more crunch in them and some health professionals out there
4:11
would say sprouts are actually healthier now the reason why we don't see sprouts typically being
4:16
sold commercially is because they can be toxic and the reason for that is actually comes down to how
4:24
they are kept in the containers so because sprouts are in a very moist warm environment they tend to
4:31
harbor harmful bacterias and things of that nature so you do need to be careful and is why I do not
4:38
encourage you to get the DIY tops I've done the DIY tops I tried whenever I'm
4:43
starting a new hobby I will first try to do everything DIY on myself on my own
4:48
discover that all of those ways are incredibly inefficient and way too much
4:52
work to handle and then I will drop the hobby and walk away from it and say that
4:57
was junk I'm never gonna do that again and then I will revisit a few later few
5:01
years later and then I will spend the five dollars literally because I'm that cheap to get the top to do the dang project and then i'm like oh wow yeah this is an easy project
5:10
i just had to get the right gear in the first place so these are mason tops these are actually
5:16
the same tops i use for fermenting inside of mason jars this company makes really awesome mason jar
5:23
products but and i use it for my kefir too yeah fermenting and kefir they all i have the same
5:30
same brand for all of them so mason tops is essentially this strainer with these
5:34
legs on it which is important and key to sprouting sprouts so I do two
5:40
tablespoons of broccoli sprouts now there's a badass female scientist out there her name is dr. Rhonda Patrick I believe do not quote me on that she has a
5:53
YouTube channel she's done various different podcasts with like high names like Joe Rogan I don't listen to his podcast but I know she's been on it a
6:00
few times and she commonly discusses the benefits of sulforaphane and how to get
6:07
more sulforaphane in your diet and that is through broccoli sprouts so there's
6:12
also kind of a sprout king I can't remember what his name is either but he's a doctor and he explains in great detail how he basically is addicted to
6:20
broccoli sprouts for its health benefits so I'm not gonna get into what still
6:25
first thing in that sort of stuff is I don't get sued but I eat broccoli
6:29
sprouts so the the reason for eating broccoli sprouts or the reason why you
6:34
may want to eat sprouts is the crunch they are crunchy compared to micro
6:41
greens in my opinion because you're eating them literally when they're in
6:44
this state right here which is the whole you're eating the seed the root the
6:49
stem the leaf you don't want them to grow like a micro green one and you
6:54
don't need any sun at all these literally don't even live in this grow section they actually live
7:00
over in my on my counter on my kitchen counter where there is no light other than ambient lighting
7:06
which is pretty much zero so that is sprouts the cost set up for this i run two mason jars because
7:14
it's three to five days for sprout time now if you put them by a cold window you know you're
7:20
pushing five if you put them in like a warm area like beside your oven type
7:24
thing or for example I keep my kombucha is kind of like by my oven hits three
7:30
days so just keep that in mind but I run about two jars at a time because this will well this is kind of depleted now at this point but this will last me about three days you can add it to sandwiches stir fries just put on rice you can put it into you can just eat it like with a
7:49
little bit of balsamic vinegar like as a salad but ultimately very very tasty and
7:54
inexpensive so I this batch of broccoli sprouts I wanted to try from Amazon so I
8:00
had something to recommend to you guys that are in the u.s so the broccoli sprout package i got
8:07
was like two pounds of seed which is incredible amount of seed um for like 20 bucks and so this
8:16
is two tables so it's like not even a dent in the bag really or dent in the bag however you'd like
8:22
to say that um and i'm expecting that to last me for about six months so 20 bucks six months worth
8:28
of sprouts which are incredibly healthy for myself and my husband who eat out of that the
8:33
next version is uh micro greens so micro greens you're gonna need a window is kind of the basis
8:40
here if you don't have a window all that's gonna happen is you're gonna end up with like semi
8:45
leggier uh sprouts which is i mean not ideal but it's not whatever it doesn't matter because you're
8:52
not going to transplant these so you can see i've been munching away on on these ones so far
8:57
so this one i will run around well how many containers do i have i have four five containers
9:03
i'm me and my husband are actually celebrating our honeymoon here next week um so we're not
9:09
going to be around and because of that i only have this last little dish left and i actually
9:14
don't think we're going to get through this before we leave on vacation so i haven't started any other
9:18
ones other than these ones i have here but i got this tray set from amazon years ago it holds up
9:25
very very nicely so it has your strainer tray which is you know this tray with the the holes in
9:32
it and then you have your bottom tray here which holds your water so i like to fill the bottom tray
9:39
with water so i don't have to continually water and then i will spread my micro greens on top
9:47
and i will just simply put another one of these green trays on top of that um and i'll keep that
9:53
in place for about three days and then I'll take it off and then it will sprout
9:57
into this now the reason for the top on top of the seed is to keep the moisture
10:03
up and to prevent against any bolting caused by light and just keep everything
10:08
really nice and compact so with this one I don't know seed wise how much I'm
10:14
using like teaspoon wise but this is a hundred-gram pack now this is a Canadian
10:19
company you can you can buy them on Amazon I got this one from early home
10:24
and garden which is a local Saskatchewan company it's like a mom-and-pop shop in
10:29
Saskatchewan you can you can get these on Amazon this mums it's a family owned
10:36
and operated company too as well and I use about a quarter of a pack of time so
10:40
25 grams to fill up this entire tray and you can see like how dense this is and
10:48
this is well over a week's worth now I will say microgreens last a lot longer
10:54
so these microgreens have been edible and an edible state now for about three
11:01
weeks and you just don't keep a lot of light on them you don't treat them very
11:05
nicely so then I grow very fast and so because of that if you're a grazer and
11:10
you don't eat a ton of leafy greens this obviously is beneficial now these are
11:16
radishes. So this is the the batch that we are slow to eat
11:22
And that because it got a little bit of kick to it This is straight radish microgreens which again it has a little bit of kick it quite spicy um and so because of that we just add a little bit to our
11:34
meals so i'll always have one of these laying around but this actually i very rarely would just
11:39
eat straight radish but again i'm going on holiday so that's the reason why so i would go with
11:44
a broccoli or a brussel or something of that nature um and do not just buy the seeds from the
11:50
I would encourage you guys to get actual sprouting seeds that are verified by
11:56
someone of a registered company because you want good germination rates and you
12:01
want them for an expensive so this bag here is five dollars and so guess that
12:07
be somewhere around eight weeks worth of sprout for five bucks which for me is
12:15
gonna save me a ton of money because otherwise my roommate let us my three
12:19
heads of romaine lettuce are with very little nutritional value somewhere around seven bucks
12:24
so you can see how quickly that can add up and save you some cash the obvious investment here
12:30
are the trays themselves now I do find that the seeds are a little bit tiny and so I do put this
12:36
paper towel on the bottom some people are going to say that's a very bad idea because it's bleached
12:40
product so I mean take that with a grain of salt if you put it directly on this grate a lot of
12:48
seeds will fall through I find so you will want to put something there I know you can get like
12:53
hemp mats I'm just not sure how reusable they are or like how cost effective it would be but I
12:59
currently just use paper towel because inflation I'm just gonna blame everything on inflation now
13:03
but yeah so the texture of these is less crunch more leafy green type vibe so the stem is crunchy
13:14
but the leaves are a lot softer than that of the sprouts so if you're looking for something that
13:18
mimics a leafy green mix then I would actually go with the micro green setup if you're looking for
13:25
something that you don't have to babysit as much and will just give you like a continuous supply
13:31
over a long-term period then I again would go with the the green the micro greens in this case you
13:40
also have less risk of potential bacterial issues when compared to that of again the sprouts
13:47
themselves so those are all things to keep in mind but ultimately what you
13:51
choose is up to you and it's gonna say it will save you money I was a skeptic
13:56
thinking that this stuff would save me any money at all when it came to greens
14:00
and the reality is that no it does save you quite a bit because it's just you
14:05
don't need the grow lights which I mean is huge you don't need potting soil
14:10
that's huge you don't need the containers that's huge you don't need the hydro systems or anything you literally need like a five dollar top and it's like five dollars
14:19
for two and then you would need the trays and you wouldn't even need an excessive amount of this i
14:23
just eat a lot i'm a salad junkie so that's why i have so many of these dang things but ultimately
14:30
um very cheap the other company that i've tried so i've tried mums uh spreading seeds which is
14:37
a saskatchewan company i've tried this amazon company which i'll link down below
14:42
for my brussel my broccoli sprouts only I haven't tried them for anything else yet and then
14:49
Probably the best hands down like bang for your buck is going to be West Coast seeds
14:55
They sell micro green see you and yeah, it's just it's drastically cheaper
14:59
So anyways, I hope this helped you guys out in deciding which one you wanted to go with
15:05
Let me know in the comments down below if you micro green or you sprout I'd be happy to know and how much you think it saves you on average a year
15:12
I'd be interested to have that input as well. I will talk to you guys next time. Bye
