Hello my fellow Rebels, it's been 26 years since George Lucas brought us episode 1, The Phantom Menace
0:06
There is a lot of debate on whether it's good and whether it's bad. And we're going to stop this debate right now, and we're going to focus on just the bad things
0:16
I'm CJ, this is WhatCulture, and these are the 8 worst things in The Phantom Menace
0:21
The first reason, bad CGI. Okay George, we get it. You are excited about this new technology, green screens, computer graphics
0:30
But why did you get so hyper fixated on it? Yes, we need CGI for the space scenes and they make the Millennium Falcon look really cool
0:40
And some of the aliens you can't just do practical. But come on, did we need so much CGI
0:47
Look at Jurassic Park. That came out in 1993, six years before the Phantom Menace
0:53
And even now, no one is complaining about how good the T-Rex and the Velociraptors look
1:01
Scott, even look at Yoda back in the Empire Strikes Back in 1980
1:05
Nobody's complaining about him. Why did we need so much CGI? Why does he keep adding more and more to it
1:14
George, just stop. We don't need any more. Go practical. Practical works so much better
1:22
He even replaced a practical Yoda in the final scenes. Practical Yoda was so much better than this CGI mess that you were giving us
1:32
I understand CGI can be a great thing, getting background droids in the distance
1:38
but the planets looked fake, the aliens looked faker, and it really pulled the audience away from making Star Wars look believable
1:48
Practical effects work so well in the original films. Why did he move away from what everybody loved
1:56
Reason number two, the dialogue. Look, we don't expect Star Wars to be winning any Oscars for its writing
2:02
but the dialogue in The Phantom Menace was absolutely atrocious. And I don't think it's the actor's fault
2:09
When you've got acting greats like Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman
2:14
who have proven time and time again their ability to act, it can only come down to one thing
2:20
George Lucas's script. It was badly written. Like some example, the gun raised response of
2:27
no need to report that to him until we have something to report
2:31
Why so many reports? We need to report the report and make sure that reported to Darth Sidious I mean yeah it not exactly well thought out or even the most iconic line now this is pod racing or are you an angel like this child is meant to be a genius who can build a droid from scraps
2:54
it just the whole dialogue was flat it was wooden and it did not help the case for people enjoying
3:02
the Phantom Menace. Reason number three, the story. When we go to see a Star Wars film, we want
3:07
something fun, a good story, good guys, battling bad guys with some really fun set pieces and action
3:15
Instead, George Lucas thought, hey, let's try and be political and spend most of the film talking
3:21
politics and trade federations. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with trying to include
3:26
an important message in the film. He did a great in the first three films and this whole made up
3:31
situation where this dictator with a large empire was being left unchecked it was having huge
3:37
implications on the rest of us and they think they can do whatever they want and not face any
3:43
in this made-up situation nothing to do with real life anyway back to the point we didn't need this
3:51
message so much in our faces it can be implied with good storytelling which was severely lacking
3:58
in The Phantom Menace. Worst part is, The Phantom Menace has pretty much zero impact
4:04
on the rest of the eight films in the Skywalker saga. Most people don't even watch it
4:09
when they do a rerun and you're not any worse for it
4:13
The Phantom Menace failed in storytelling. Reason number four, Qui-Gon was killed too soon
4:20
Qui-Gon was Qui-Gon too soon in the prequel trilogy. Yeah, there's your one bad joke
4:26
No more, no more. seriously though we finally get an interesting character in the phantom menace and they kill him
4:33
off he was great he didn't listen to the jedi council or any type of authority he was headstrong
4:40
he was doing what he thought was best and he had great knowledge of the force god he was even the
4:47
first jedi to become a force ghost which no one had done before and yet lucas kills him off right
4:53
at the end of the film sorry spoilers it would have been more impactful to learn more about his
4:59
past why he was the way he was and why he didn't listen to the jedi council and who he would have
5:05
been with anakin how amazing would it have been in episode two right at the very end if anakin
5:11
betrayed qui-gon and finally kind of made his steps to the dark side but hell knows younglings was
5:19
Also pretty cool Reason number five midichlorians For some reason George Lucas decided hey I want to ruin one of the coolest things about Star Wars the Force by giving it scientific
5:33
reasons. We know Star Wars is a science fiction film, but it doesn't mean we always need science
5:38
to explain things. The mystery of the Force was what made it cool. Why are some people more
5:44
tune to it what is this cosmic connection to everybody in the universe it made it really cool
5:50
and interesting i would have been happy not knowing what the force was and just thinking if it is some
5:55
sort of magic if the force all comes down to science why didn't darth sigus just clone a bunch
6:00
of people with high midichlorians and have a sith army rather than a bunch of django fets as clone
6:06
troopers especially when we found out they're using a gillette's women's leg shaver to check
6:11
for midichlorians it kind of takes away from the magic of the force i did not subscribe to this
6:19
type of explanation but you should subscribe to this channel but don't do it for me do it for him
6:28
number six jojo binks okay we all know he's going to be on the list but just to be clear
6:37
no hate should go to the lovely Ahmed Best who played Jar Jar
6:42
The guy came in to do a job. He was told by the director what to do
6:46
and left being told he'd done a good job because they didn't make him re-film stuff
6:53
That's not on the actor. That is down to the director. And guess who the director was again
6:59
It was George Lucas. The problem was George Lucas wanting to care to young kids
7:05
and add some not needed humour to the Star Wars universe. Come on, it's no secret that Star Wars makes a lot of money from its toys and merchandise
7:15
and it feels like Jar Jar was added as a way to sell a fun character to young kids
7:22
He was added as a plot device to cause problems which can easily get fixed
7:26
and even though he's an idiot, somehow he was leading an army
7:31
What was going on in George Lucas's head? We won't even get started on the accent choice for Jar Jar in the way that he speaks
7:40
If I hear the word Yusa one more time, I'm going to go crazy
7:46
It's been haunting me for two decades. Reason number seven, the droid
7:51
Robots are cool. We all love a cool looking robot in films
7:57
Look at Wally from Disney. Johnny Five one of the original and best Optimus Prime from the transformers and of course r2d2 bb8 and bd1 from jedi survivor even the droidekas were pretty cool and badass at the start of the phantom menace
8:18
so much so that qui-gon and obi-wan had to run away but the battle droids were just annoying
8:26
Again, George Lucas was probably trying to add humour to the film and sell more merchandise
8:33
But it was pointless. They could barely aim at anything. They could barely move and don't seem to have any sort of intelligence
8:42
So why would anybody want to use them in battle if they can't be self-reliant
8:49
They had a ship controlling them, so the people obviously in the ship are giving them commands
8:54
so who's telling them what to do? I mean, they did look cool whenever they got hit with a lightsaber
9:01
but other than that, what did the droids actually bring to the film? Now, before we get to our final
9:07
reason, don't forget to hit that like button and share your most hated feature of the Phantom
9:13
Menace. Final reason, Darth Maul. Now, to be clear, the reason is not that Darth Maul was in it
9:20
The reason is that Darth Maul was hardly even in it. The climactic battle at the end of The Phantom Menace is still one of the greatest battles in cinema
9:30
When Jewel of Fates hits, I still get chills. But the character of Darth Maul was wasted just like Qui-Gon
9:39
It could have really developed as character over the prequel trilogy and given us a strong antagonist to link the three prequels
9:46
giving our character someone to fear and hate. but Darth Maul only got three lines of dialogue in the movie but he did get two epic battle scenes
9:56
but we could have got so much more out of the character he was all over the marketing all over
10:02
the trailers but fell flat in the final film thankfully his character was developed in the
10:09
animated series and even teased at the end of a solo story but even that went nowhere but the idea
10:16
of Maul will forever be wasted in The Phantom Menace when it could have been so much more across
10:23
all of the films. That brings us to the end of this list but it is not the end of this video
10:29
series because we're going to talk about the things we love about The Phantom Menace very soon
10:35

10:40
