If there's one thing that myself and Josh Brown absolutely adore
0:03
it is recommending to you all sorts of overlooked games. We never shut up about them
0:07
You can subscribe to the What Culture Gaming podcast to get a handful of them pretty much every week
0:11
But right here, we thought we'd break down the biggest ones of the most overlooked games of the 2020s so far
0:16
Now, I'm going to talk to your face about Trail Out. I've done this a couple of times
0:21
but I need the world to know more about Trail Out. This game initially released on Game Pass back in 2022
0:25
I feel like the world didn't care. I didn't know it existed back then. And then I caught a PlayStation trailer for it
0:30
Honestly, just like a month ago or something. And then 2026 releases on PlayStation
0:34
This game is everything that I love about physics-based arcade racing. If you love the likes of Wreckfest from the last few years
0:40
or even all the way back to the arcade races, the Need for Speeds, the Burnouts, the Flatouts, etc
0:44
The Blurs of the World. Hell yeah. The Split Seconds of the World
0:48
It's a sequel to every single one of them mushed together. Just a lovely hot pot that I put my face in
0:52
and I cannot get enough of it. So Trail Out is easily one of the most recommendable games
0:56
that I'll ever come across. And I'm starting quite recent with these because like I said, the new version that's on PlayStation from 2026
1:02
the game already has a sequel confirmed, which is music to my ears. But it really is in the physics model
1:07
It is in the super weighty, the cars that you're unlocking, the fact that all of them feel quite different
1:11
Like if you're piloting a big Hummer, it's going to feel different to a smaller vehicle. And you can just barrel through the environments
1:17
There's also a ton of modes in here. One of them is even like a Mario Kart style thing
1:21
where you've got weapons, you're using rockets against each other, or you're trying to trade bombs before you explode
1:26
it's just every single thing you love about video game racing that isn't in the likes of a Forza
1:32
It's kind of heaven, Josh. You know what? This sounds like an arcade racer's dream
1:36
Yeah. It's quite telling that we are kicking off a list about overlooked games
1:41
including one that we literally overlooked for four years until you got to it at the start of 2026
1:47
It's so good. I blame Xbox for that, to be honest. I blame Xbox marketing for that
1:51
It was there the entire time. It was there the whole time. The source was right there
1:55
Speaking of racing games, Scott, I haven't got a racing game next, but my first pick is Pacific Drive
2:01
Now, this is a first-person car-centric roguelike experience that is very different to what you mentioned, but is also a car lover's dream
2:11
Essentially, the game revolves around this place called The Zone, this exclusion zone in Midwest America that has been quarantined because a bunch of supernatural phenomena is occurring within it
2:24
and you're tasked with driving this supernatural style car. It's one of the few cars that are running in the area
2:31
And you start at your home base, which is aptly a garage, and you're able to spend the resources that you go out into the world
2:38
and collect on this vehicle itself so you can equip it with better tires
2:43
You can have better steering. You can have an engine that doesn't require as much gas
2:48
You can get an extra trunk so you can carry more stuff. And it's about the process of upgrading this vehicle
2:53
taking it out into the world, trying to survive the many environmental horrors
2:58
that are out there, be that extreme weather, be that a supernova that comes in at the end of each run
3:05
and you have to get to this wormhole to get back to your safety of the garage
3:10
before you just essentially get exploded and lose all your stuff. Okay. Just letting it engage it
3:16
Yeah, it's like going to our old office every single day. Almost every day
3:19
It sort of feels like that. You've got to put your radiation there. Supernova's coming in
3:23
just yeah give me a gregs get me back home exactly so you're essentially going out to get your gregs
3:28
and try to get back in one piece um but it's a great uh formula i don't really love roguelikes
3:34
but this got its hooks in me the further you get into the zone the more dangerous things get but
3:39
the more rewards you can bring back to make you even sturdier for those runs i think the
3:45
driving physics themselves are really weighty are really responsive there's a lot of peril when
3:50
you're in this iron machine and you've got the entire world outside trying to take you down and
3:56
the only piece of peace that you can actually get is with inside this car and you're hoping the
4:02
steering doesn't go you're hoping the lights don't go you're hoping the engine doesn't uh flat out on
4:06
you you're hoping you don't have to remove a tire and get another one on because you might not have
4:10
brought one so you're gonna go scavenging it is great it is great when you're out in the world
4:14
and it is great when you get to come back and you get to customize your car and know
4:20
right, the next run is going to be even better because I'm well protected
4:24
One of the shiniest hidden gems that I haven't got around to, I saw the developers say that it's sold
4:28
like half a million or something. So it is thankfully doing quite well. But like you said
4:32
it comes with word of mouth recommendations. I think it's on PlayStation Plus now as well. It was definitely to begin with
4:37
but honestly, it's worth whatever price they're charging. Like it's a good 20 to 30 hour experience
4:43
if you want to do anything, everything, if not more because it is roguelike in nature so you can keep going out there
4:48
It's got a bunch of DLCs that I haven't played yet but I'm really excited to jump back in. Before the next entry, today's video is sponsored by Aniba
4:55
a company that had the radical idea of saying what if there was an easy way to get the best deals on games all in one place
5:01
Aniba.com is a global gaming marketplace with more than 40,000 digital products
5:06
with deals across PC, console and mobile. Whether you're looking for new releases, old and forgotten gems
5:12
exclusive DLC packs you missed, or even subscriptions like Game Pass. If you're a multiplayer fan, you can even get things like in-game currency for titles like Call of Duty or Fortnite
5:22
at a discount compared to what you'd pay for them directly on their own storefronts
5:26
The idea is to keep costs low, and all of your gaming purchases in one place with an eBay safe and easy to use marketplace
5:32
And if anything does go wrong, you can get in touch with their 24-7 customer service
5:36
So, whether you want to pre-order new games at the lowest prices, or pick up codes for DLC packs and games that have been otherwise delisted from digital marketplaces
5:44
like this sick Stan Lee playable skin for The Amazing Spider-Man, save your money and shop smarter by clicking our codes in the description and getting started
5:52
Anyway, back on with vid. My next one is a hilariously named game, Fist Forged in Shadow Torch, Josh
5:59
Oh, it's got an acronym. It does. Acronym alert. This is a game from a developer called Ty Games
6:06
and you might see their next game. It's called Zoopunk. It was revealed at the Xbox Deb
6:10
I think it was one of the developer directs a couple of months ago. Extremely impressive little studio that don't put many games out
6:16
There's always a few years in between them. Like I said, their next game not coming until 2027. But Forged in Shadow Torch came out back in 2021
6:22
one of the meatiest Metroidvanias you could ever find. Very much a dieselpunk aesthetic
6:27
but I'm a pure gameplay as king kind of guy. I love Metroidvanias
6:31
and this just has such crunchy combat, really fun unlockables, and you're throwing enemies into each other
6:37
You're using this giant, ridiculous third arm to climb your way through these different environments
6:42
but it is the overall presentation, it is the feel of the combat, and the immediacy of it as well
6:46
where you don't go more than just a few minutes, like I said, without an upgrade, without another enemy encounter
6:51
I like the boss fights and everything as well. Quite a condensed experience, like you know what you're getting with a Metroidvania
6:56
but it's not bothered about being overly challenging, like throwing you know
7:00
blasphemous levels of boss fights at you or whatever the forward momentum is what got me through this
7:04
and I think the name maybe put a few people off just thinking like what the hell is a forge
7:09
what's a shadow torch exactly I don't even know I've not experienced this but I have fought plenty of fists and gateshead as well to be fair I know you got to watch out for them especially the aggravated rabbits with the third arms Especially those They come round the corners Straight for you Greg The whole presentation though overall
7:23
it has this mature sensibility. The only thing that isn't going for a more humanoid story
7:28
or human-based story is this idea that you're playing as these anthropomorphic animals, which seems to be the studio's thing
7:34
Zoopunk, like I said, that's coming up, also has this tale of this super hard lad rabbit
7:38
with all of his blades and these different abilities that you can unlock, and it's the same thing. in Forged and Shadow Torch as well
7:44
I just had a lovely time with it. I haven't seen a single soul talk about it apart from myself and the beautiful Dan Durkin
7:48
back in 2021. So shout out to this game. I don't like Metroidvanias
7:52
but I'd give this a go. Up next for me, I need to talk about Stay Out of the House again
7:56
And if you are a follower of the What Culture Gaming podcast, you will have heard me bang on
8:01
about both Pacific Drive and this game multiple times. I did a editorial that's on a YouTube channel
8:07
specifically about this game because it blew me away. Puppa Combo is a lo-fi horror developer that has been making games for years now and Stay Out of
8:15
the House was the one that broke through for me I noticed it on the store it was about $3.99
8:20
and I was taken aback by its PS1 style polygonal graphics it's very much a throwback stylistically
8:28
but it's presented from a first person perspective which you kind of really didn't get back in the
8:33
day but it has that grimy industrial lo-fi quality than a lot of ps1 horror had and i was in just off
8:41
the aesthetic alone i did worry initially that that's all it would be you know for the sake of
8:46
five pounds in the sale i was happy to just get this retro throwback but what i actually got was
8:52
a fully fleshed out horror experience i was so impressed by the puzzles in this game i was so
8:57
impressed by the cat and mouse gameplay that you have with the stalker enemy with it as well as the
9:02
level design and the design of this house that you're told to stay out of but obviously you don't
9:07
the whole thing starts with this prologue that isn't really indicative of the game to come but
9:11
is a great scene setter called night shift where you play as a character in a gas station essentially
9:17
you're doing the night shift and you have to do your normal jobs you have to go mop up you have
9:22
to replace the stock and the darker it gets and the fewer cars that come by the more paranoid you
9:28
get because you know there's a killer out on the loose somewhere and it's mostly about the tension
9:33
and the paranoia that comes with this specific section but it sets you up so well it establishes
9:38
the killer and then when you get into the house itself just the puzzles that you have to do like
9:43
i mentioned the tension of crawling around the scream that the killer called the butcher i think
9:48
gives when he sees you it's like a pig shrieking or something and then he beelines towards you
9:54
chops you to death with his little mallet and you've got to restart from your last save point
9:58
which you do by collecting VHS tapes and putting them into a CRT television and saving your
10:03
progress that way. Public Combo has made some excellent games in the past and there were so many other horror
10:08
titles I could have shouted out on this list like Madison and Visage but I've mentioned
10:13
them so many times before and this one is so lo-fi, so under the radar that when it comes
10:18
around to Halloween every horror fan is going to play it IMO. It's just absolutely outstanding and I can't believe how cheap it is and how well made
10:27
it is and how much quality is in there i adore it man we've talked loads over the years about the
10:31
ps1 horror era like across the 90s and the idea of targeting that as a specific art style with
10:36
like modern tech like updating frame rates whatever you want to do and that's a great way to go like
10:41
if you have those memories of certain enemies in tomb raider for example or the old resident evils
10:45
or whatever there's something to polygonal horror and that can be so viscerally affecting because
10:49
your mind makes up the distance adds the detail in yes or whatever and i think yeah stay out the
10:53
house isn't a perfect example and you can also shoot an old lady in the head with a gun and if
10:58
you wanted to no don't do that it's still the house if you wanted to you can do it it's very
11:04
immersive sim is what i'm trying to say you've got so many different um experimental ideas that
11:08
you can implement that will get you through the puzzles and that when you think outside the box
11:13
you might think it might not work then it absolutely does my next game is a game that
11:17
i've been begging josh brown to play for let me check four years now neon white my friend
11:22
One of the coolest first-person shooters that has ever been made. A really cool scoreboard-chasing arcade-y, like I said, FPS
11:31
but you're basically trading the idea of weapon pickups as you move through the environment
11:35
So you want to find these different cards, equip the weapons. They have very finite ammo counts, so you're balancing that against the different enemies that you need to take out
11:41
and finding the perfect run through every level. Levels themselves take like a minute or something like that
11:46
Very, very short. There is an overall story tying everything together. I think the game's soundtrack is exemplary as well
11:52
I don't know music genres as well as I should. I was going to do a beatboxy thing there
11:56
but I'm not going to do it. No, no, no, no. It's one of them
12:01
Thank you. And it keeps you going. I very much love unlocking the next level, but having that feeling of
12:05
let me jump back in, I can refine a few more seconds off my time. If you have other people
12:09
who are playing it on your friends list, then it brings those times in so you know that you're always
12:13
just behind someone else or just ahead of someone else. I just love the way it's put together. Like I said, I think it puts such a focus on pace
12:18
and different ways that you can get through the environments. There are a lot of physics-based weapons later on as well
12:24
things that will propel you through the environment based on blast radius or splash damage
12:28
and you're forever keeping an eye on the next thing, the next thing, and then stitching that together the next time you go through the level itself
12:34
So Neon White exemplary, like tuned to the most perfect engine of a game
12:39
that you can find. By the way, if you want to keep locked in for something like Neon White's runs
12:43
we've also got a Secret Lab affiliate link in the description below
12:47
if you want to get yourself one of these so you can lock in and beat his high score
12:53
Professional, man. He's professional. Up next for me is Wu Chang Fallen Feathers
12:57
This is a Souls-like game that released last year in 2025. It kind of came out of nowhere for me
13:03
There are so many Souls-likes these days. Every time you watch a State of Player or an Xbox Developer Direct
13:08
or a Summer Games Fest, you're inundated with a lot of games, with a fantasy setting, with stamina meters, big bosses
13:15
the From Software style that we all love and love. Some people are sick of them. i'm even getting sick of them as a super fan but wuchang fallen feathers is absolutely one that you
13:22
should play it's not only one of the best games in the genre not made by from software it's kind
13:27
of one of the best action games that i've played over the past couple of years it's kind of on par
13:32
with lies of p which would have gotten a shout out here but i feel like that's a little bit more
13:36
well known wuchang um is very traditional souls it's you don't even have a jump button necessarily
13:42
but the combat is weighty it is satisfying it is responsive there is great boss design there is so
13:48
much variety in the levels themselves and those levels do have that winding labyrinthine recursive
13:55
design that makes some of the best souls games so memorable because you just want to explore
14:00
what's down that nook what's down that cranny is that the appropriate term nook oh there's plenty
14:07
of nooks and crannies there's plenty of nooks and crannies as well possibly a ravine every now and then yeah there's some ravines you get abilities that allow you to explore other parts of the map
14:14
as well that you might not have been to before. But it just nails the fundamentals. Are there any crevices
14:19
There might be some crevices. Get in. Good. Yeah, some optional crevices. Thank God. Go down
14:23
It's about time. It nails the fundamentals in a really satisfying way. It's the full package IMO
14:28
It about a 30 to 40 hour experience And it was so good that when I wrapped credits I wanted to jump back in immediately and i did jump back in immediately to complete the new game plus and to do some of
14:39
the npc quests that i didn't get to the first time around i know it's had some controversy since
14:43
it released because they actually censored some of the content uh at the request i think of maybe
14:49
even the chinese government because it is a chinese set and developed game and so you can't outright
14:54
kill some of the bosses because they're based on um real uh mythological figures from from china i
15:01
think okay so they did patch that in i know there was a bit of backlash to that i can't say whether
15:04
that tarnishes the game at all but i'm sure those boss fights are still incredibly satisfying uh
15:09
just you might not be able to kill them outright anymore but still the full package is there and
15:14
if you are a souls fan or even if you're a lapsed souls fan who has kind of been out the genre for
15:18
a little bit and is wanting a really good one to get back in i definitely recommend this alongside
15:23
side lies of p i do love the outside of from software souls games that we're starting to get
15:28
like wuchang fallen feathers neo 3 is exemplary yes like where from soft have gone down a specific
15:33
route releasing something every couple of years it's a lot more i don't know considered um and a
15:37
lot more um deliberate in regards to fighting bosses like you have the more action focus that's
15:41
starting to come back in uh which i love to see as a spectacle fighting spectacle fighting lover
15:46
yeah as a word of string of words for the marvel's midnight suns my friend oh one of the finest
15:53
experiences that would grace your consoles i get why it was so hey when it first came out i also get
15:58
the fact that it's called marvel's midnight sons but the midnight sons with a u is different to the
16:03
midnight sons with an o so then all the comic people were like what the hell are you guys doing
16:06
using this turn that's not the midnight sons i totally get that but the gameplay is where it
16:11
matters this idea of this card-based strategy game made by fireaxis the dudes that made x-com
16:15
just one of the most enjoyable strategic games that you can come across i love the overall
16:19
presentation there are bits and pieces of what assumedly would have been a monetization grind
16:23
left in here like i said part of the backlash was the midnight sun stuff but there was a lot of
16:27
consternation around the idea that they were going to do card packs and recurrent spending
16:31
and all that stuff when the game was first revealed that backlash is what overshadowed
16:35
the game entirely and led to a drop in sales etc but i do think the strategy that's on show is
16:41
awesome i think the idea that you're being dealt this deck of cards that can have everything from
16:44
environmental interactions to the different hero powers that you have and chaining those moves
16:48
together with your companions or against multiple enemies and just trying to think like how much can
16:52
i do per turn it's something that the mario and rabbits games have as well right where it's not
16:56
necessarily about um you know one person that you're playing as doing one move and then moving
17:00
on it is about chaining everything together and the game's presentation is awesome and like i said
17:05
you can bring in the environmental attacks you can trigger different explosives you can send a dude
17:09
flying into someone else that then triggers their special like i think there's a lot of strategic
17:13
experimentation happening here and i wonder if it's something that fire axis might have done anyway
17:17
until they got the license and they then made it more of a Marvel game. Like I said, the card-based side of it
17:22
all of the monetization practices were stripped out of it. I don't know if there's any monetization stuff left in there
17:28
I didn't pay a cent more, a penny more than just buying the game
17:32
So I just find it to be one of the most recommendable strategy games on the market
17:36
It's super cheap these days and the DLC is awesome. I'm so Marvel fatigued out, but in terms of their power set
17:44
there's almost no one better, especially when you start comboing stuff together. Every time you talk about this game, and you mentioned a lot of great games, no doubt already
17:51
but this is the one where I kick myself and I never got around to playing it, and I still really want to because it sounds like it's just so good at what it's trying to do
17:59
And as a huge Marvel fan who hasn't actually really got that Marvel fatigue
18:02
and always loves an excuse to jump back into this world, every time I watch some of the cutscenes, I watch the characters hanging out at their base
18:08
and then obviously going into the battles themselves. It looks like a perfect combination of that genre and the superhero genre
18:15
Yeah, I love their sort of persona adjacent, hanging out at the academy, everyone's making friends, social circle stuff
18:20
That's another thing that made other people run a mile because it's that idea of
18:24
do you want to attend Blade's Book Club? Yeah. I mean, I do. Do you want to go skinny dipping with Wolverine
18:29
Yeah. And so those things are in there. That's maybe not what you were expecting going in
18:33
I do think that side of it is just fun. It's quite twee. It does feel like a bunch of adults writing a story
18:38
that would work for the TikTokers of the world, but the gameplay is what matters. Gameplay is always king
18:42
And that's the thing that you'll be spending three quarters of your time doing. But also, I have a soft spot
18:47
for taking the in-game photo mode pictures and putting them in picture frames and adorning my dorm with them
18:52
So just because I'm best mates with Wolverine, don't worry about it. Do you think he sits there with the Wolverine
18:56
That's how I sit there. Does it, yeah? Yeah, that's me looking at a copy of Midnight Suns
19:00
knowing that the world won't play it. And me going, it's good, it's really good
19:04
It is. Maybe we'll get a sequel. Someday. I don't know why he's got this voice now
19:09
It's never going to get a sequel. Oh, yeah, no. It's never going to. Next up, I'm being a little bit cheeky
19:13
scott tailford because i'm including hunt showdown 1896 i always get the number wrong don't worry
19:19
though you've not missed 1895 of these games this is just a version of hunt showdown that
19:26
relaunched itself essentially in 2024 now the original hunt showdown came out in 2018 but this
19:32
was a huge upgrade to the engine it cut off support for the older consoles and is essentially
19:37
kind of a stealth sequel in and of itself which is why i'm including it even though we had such a
19:41
short list of games from the past five years we wanted to talk about and we couldn't so if you do
19:46
like this video please let us know because i'm desperate to do another one if you want a top hundreds that takes us the afternoon we could do it we could do that that's something we can do but
19:53
hunt showdown 1896 is one of my favorite multiplayer experiences definitely of this decade and certainly
20:00
of this generation so far it is an extraction shooter which i don't normally go for it's kind
20:06
of balance around 2v2 or 3v3 and team combat but i played it entirely solo and don't be wrong it was
20:14
difficult but i was able to put up with it and was able to kind of get through some situations
20:19
where i was completely outnumbered because the car shooting is so good it is a game that makes
20:24
you absolutely paranoid it is an immersive title with very little in the way of hood if you shoot
20:30
someone you won't know if you hit them until you go and investigate and see the blood they left
20:35
behind or their body on the floor if you're lucky it takes a couple shots to take someone down you
20:40
have because it's set in 1896 you have old school cowboy style revolvers repeaters that take a long
20:46
time to reload a long time to shoot but that risk reward is balanced because if you do get that
20:51
headshot you're taking them out immediately and the gameplay these stealth gunfights in this game
20:56
are unbelievable man like when you're in one of those tense situations you're trading bullets
21:00
you don't know if you tag them they don't know if you tagged you you don't know where one of their
21:04
teammates has gone has he tried to sneak around you is he in the bushes over there is he gonna
21:08
snipe me i don't have any clue uh it puts you in that mode thanks to the immersive graphics which
21:13
are kind of second to none it's maybe one of if not the best looking games i've ever played oh
21:18
yeah incredible every single time i boot it up and thanks to those visuals thanks to the incredible
21:23
audio design it just puts you in this state of paranoia where you're creeping around like the
21:28
bayou or whatever it is and you're trying to not get shot in the head and you're trying to ruin
21:33
someone else's day and the way that it kind of puts you in this mentality of predator and prey
21:38
is amazing like it can switch in an instant you can be hunting someone they might be able to
21:44
fend off your ambush and then suddenly you running across the map and you trying to lose them in the shrubbery as well but the idea of tracking someone and thinking like i know they were over there which way would they have gone and you kind of on someone heels the entire map while they trying to run away from you that game
22:00
of cat and mouse unbelievable it might even sell you on extraction shooters at a hole the presentation
22:05
is great the setting is great the weapons are chunky and fun i also did an editorial on this
22:10
game as well because i just needed to shout it out it's been around for a while but with this
22:14
relaunched it was just the perfect time to jump back in i i i adore it if you like slow pace
22:19
shooters if you like that risk reward element give it a go man it's so it's such a great combat
22:24
system i would die immediately you would yeah you get shot in the ass yeah my last pick is one of my
22:29
favorite games of the decade overall the hundred line last defense academy yes which is a beautiful
22:33
mix of various social aspects that have been in the likes of the danganronpa series it is the same
22:37
developer the same head of the studio and all the kinds of bonds that you might make in something
22:41
like a persona mixed with another one of my favorite genres the grid-based strategy genre
22:46
and basically tells the story of various young individuals that get whisked away to this
22:50
blast defense academy to try and fend off different waves of demons everything is kept very mysterious
22:55
i love how anime af the entire presentation is one of the characters has a pumpkin for her head
23:00
and the pumpkin moves and talks and all that kind of stuff she looks really cool um but it is the i
23:04
guess it's the mystery pull it is the gameplay unlocks it is the synergy between all the different
23:08
characters that i really love and it is straight back in regards to um the presentation like you
23:12
are clicking on um ostensibly like you know full-size profile photos to then go into dialogue
23:18
the game does have like a hundred endings as well and which the developers said was this massively
23:22
ambitious idea that they had at the beginning could you make a game with a hundred different endings um and all sorts of different branch path things happen in the background without you
23:29
necessarily realizing and then obviously the game serves up one of those endings later on last year they revealed that the game sequel was already inside the game itself because after the
23:36
first hundred days of the game have passed there is another hundred days that you can get stuck into
23:40
and so it's very much bang for your buck as well it reminds me a lot of a demon slayer where the
23:45
idea of you know you take a whole bunch of youths and they all have different powers and in demon
23:49
slayer's case they're ranking up to become one of the harsher in last defense academy you're sort
23:54
of unlocking this power based on this chemo anima which literally means that you have to stab yourself
23:58
with a weapon and just hope for the best something then comes out of you a little bit like persona and you blend all those aspects together and i think at least for me you have a supremely
24:06
gripping story where, like I said, everything is very mysterious, reveals come. The game is told day by day, so you get a little bit of
24:12
a reveal every couple of days, but you can also indulge in the combat and the exploration of the environment
24:16
that you're in. Try and find out more about the Academy and why is there this weird
24:20
mascot with a brain that you can see, this little puppet dude who's
24:24
trying to tell you everything that's going, he's got a little pork pie hat on. I don't trust him at all. All of a sudden he goes
24:28
missing, what's going on? So it has all those kind of aspects, but like I said, gameplay
24:32
is super tight, and if you like over-the-top anime the way that the likes of Demon Slayer has gone over its seasons or just anime seasons in
24:39
general then I think Last Defense Academy has so much charm to it backed up by the strategic layer
24:43
and that I found to be incredibly intoxicating. So to round off this list Scott I've got to talk
24:47
to you about Pentiment. This is a game that I slept on for years and finally got around to
24:52
playing at the start of 2026 and it was one of those where I was just kicking myself thinking
24:56
why did you not play this before and why have you not been shouting from the rooftops about how good
25:02
it is for the past four years or so this is a smaller title from obsidian it is a side-scrolling
25:08
adventure game almost with very consequence heavy dialogue options you are essentially
25:14
this painter called andreas who was in this small town in like the 1700s the 1800s back in the day
25:22
back in the bohemian times back in today post-roman era and you're um at this abbot working with the
25:29
priests and you're learning how to be an artist essentially you're doing an internship there
25:33
essentially from back in the day and while you're there someone in the town kills a nobleman who is
25:39
visiting and it's up to you being kind of this third party investigator to figure out who actually
25:46
did the murder and one of your friends at the abitry uh one of the priests is kind of being
25:53
fingered for it he's an old man he's a lovely man stop laughing over there stop laughing at the word
25:57
fingered. This is an alien covenant all over again. One of the old men
26:03
gets fingered for it. No way. I know, right? And you want to defend him because
26:09
it's pretty clear that he probably didn't do it. Did he? But he seems
26:13
like a nice guy. So you have to go all around this town. You have to talk to everyone
26:17
You have a time limit to do so. You have a day-night cycle. So you've got to still
26:20
do your duties as an amateur artist. And you've got to have tea with
26:25
people, have lunch with people, try to get information out of them try to figure out who did what and why they would have done it and then present
26:31
enough evidence to plead the case at the actual trial that eventually happens but it blends in so
26:37
much um from history itself like the context and why someone might have done this and the different
26:43
class uh hierarchies that are on and display the discrepancy between wealth and poverty and on top
26:51
of so many other just fascinating themes that are so well portrayed in the game it's one of the best
26:56
written games that i probably ever played i loved it so much and without spoiling too much because i
27:01
definitely want people to play it there is a moment where the game reveals itself to be bigger than it
27:06
is and it drives home just how much your choices actually matter when you're in those moments where
27:13
you're having a trial and you're kind of pointing towards someone who might have done a murder but
27:18
you're kind of not sure but you kind of are and it's on you to essentially sentence this person
27:23
death it stays with you long after the game is over it's done in this old art style of the time
27:29
where it mimics the the paintings and the illustrations of that era so it's 2d but it's
27:36
so lushly brought to life admittedly that was one of the reasons i didn't play it at launch because
27:40
i didn't like the look of the art style but it made me so interested in it when i finally did it
27:45
and it's considering the amount of cast members it has it's an entire town of people you can talk to
27:49
every one of them is memorable yeah every one of them you get to know every one of them stands out
27:55
and it is such a great ensemble piece and i am still thinking and ruminating about some of the
28:00
choices that i made in that game and the lives i potentially ruined so if you're into rpgs if you
28:06
into story focused games don't let the art style put you off i promise it'll win you over it's an
28:11
absolute marvel and i would definitely recommend the no clip documentary about the game it'll make
28:15
you appreciate it even more they did an excellent job interviewing all the developers and stuff so
28:19
So yeah, old school Obsidian, old school RPG, old school adventure game vibes
28:24
Amazing. If you're a calligraphy and font freak like myself, then it's absolute heaven as well
28:29
Every single character has different fonts based on where they are, like you said, in the class system
28:33
Also, last thing for this, I think it was written by Josh Sawyer. It was? Yes, of Fallout New Vegas fame
28:38
So if you want a little taste of what that man is up to in the modern day, and you're looking at everything else that Obsidian's doing
28:42
going, where's my Sawyer? I want a little bit more of a Sawyer sauce. It's in there
28:46
So worry about it. Honestly, I love recommending games. We will probably do this in the future
