Watch: Russian Mi-8 Helicopter Rescues a Sailor in the Bering Sea
Jul 12, 2025
A Mi-8 helicopter of the National Air Ambulance Service (NSSA) of the Rostec State Corporation evacuated a sailor from the fishing-krill trawler Vladimir Starzhinsky, which was operating in the Anadyr Bay area of the Bering Sea.
The 28-year-old crew member had sustained an open leg fracture and urgently required medical assistance.
“The rescue operation lasted three and a half hours. During this time, the Mi-8 helicopter reached the fishing vessel. The pilots held the aircraft steady above the trawler’s deck, and with the help of rescuers using a winch system, lifted the patient on board. The rescuers carefully managed the hoisting process from the vessel’s deck, securely fixing the equipment cables to prevent the stretcher with the patient from spinning during the operation. The man received initial medical care during the flight,” said the NSSA.
The "air ambulance" expeditiously transported the patient to the Chukotka Regional Hospital.
It’s worth noting that in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, air ambulance services are often the only means of rapidly transporting ship crew members to medical facilities. The NSSA has been successfully operating in the region since 2020. Over this time, crews have carried out more than 1,300 flights, saving 1,600 patients.
Currently, the NSSA operates in 54 Russian regions. Its fleet comprises 76 helicopters, all equipped with modern intensive care equipment. The service’s core principle is adherence to the “golden hour” rule, where every minute counts for saving a patient’s life and health.
