Can I make my favorite Christmas cookies
0:02
with these strange measuring cups and
0:04
spoons that are shaped like a snail?
0:06
Today's video is part product review and
0:08
part baking test as I make my favorite
0:10
Christmas cookies using these. The final
0:12
taste test will reveal how accurate
0:14
these are in a realworld test. And along
0:17
the way, I'm going to share with you the
0:18
recipe for my favorite cookies that my
0:20
grandma used to make for me when I was a
0:21
kid and older. So, let's jump right into
0:23
it with the unboxing and then we'll
0:24
start baking. These are the Ototo Shelly
0:28
measuring cups and spoon set. I paid
0:31
$14.95 for this. Currently has a 4.6
0:33
star rating among about 2400 reviews.
0:37
And here they are. Let's take a look at
0:39
a couple of these. So, these are
0:42
snail-shaped twoin-one measuring cups
0:44
and spoons. You have a spoon on this
0:46
side and a cup on this side. They say
0:49
it's a space-saving design. Dishwasher
0:51
safe. Amazon also says customers usually
0:54
keep this item. Now, online, most people
0:56
who liked them said they were cute. That
0:57
was the word I saw the most often. They
0:59
also said they are functional. Now,
1:01
there are people that didn't like it,
1:02
though. Someone was saying the
1:02
measurements not marked on there, but I
1:04
do see it in the bottom. Some people
1:05
said that they don't really stand up or
1:07
they fall over easily, so we'll have to
1:08
see about that. How about a quick
1:10
accuracy test? I've got this zeroed out.
1:14
One cup of sugar in a regular measuring
1:16
cup.
1:18
7.25
1:20
oz. Let's zero that out again. Now,
1:23
let's try our contender and see what
1:24
that weighs.
1:27
7.65
1:29
oz. That's only about a 5% variation. I
1:32
think that's certainly acceptable. Let's
1:34
try a tablespoon test here. Here is the
1:37
control tablespoon leveled off with
1:39
sugar.
1:42
We have exactly.5 oz zeroed out. Now,
1:45
trying the oto tablespoon with sugar
1:48
leveled off.
1:51
5 oz. Once again, we are right on track.
1:53
Before I get to the cookies, a couple
1:55
quick notes. First up on the cups
1:57
themselves. Now, they are designed to
1:59
nest like this so they can lay flat.
2:01
Looks very nice. And there's a little
2:03
notch here that goes in here so they can
2:05
stack perfectly together. And that's
2:08
kind of cool when you're when you're
2:09
displaying them like this. However, say
2:11
you have a measuring cup you want to
2:13
pour something into. You need both hands
2:15
kind of pour it in there. Works for
2:16
something like this with a flat bottom.
2:19
But that's how these sit. I don't know
2:21
about that. That's
2:23
not optimal as far as that goes. So, I'm
2:25
not real thrilled about that. That
2:26
doesn't mean they won't work though.
2:28
It's just one less thing that you have
2:29
an option for. Another thing to point
2:31
out is that they do have the measurement
2:32
in the bottom of each side, but I can
2:34
barely see it. Like, I can kind of see
2:36
one cup cuz it's large. But right here,
2:38
it's supposed to be one tablespoon. It's
2:40
hard to see. It's really difficult. I'm
2:42
actually using the box which shows the
2:44
measurements on there because I can't
2:46
see this. Even my reading glasses on, I
2:48
can't see it. And the smaller it gets,
2:50
the more ridiculous it gets. Like this
2:51
one. This is supposed to be a/4 cup here
2:54
and a/4 teaspoon here. I can't I can't
2:57
see it. I can't see. I'm going to use
2:58
the box. Maybe I'll have it memorized
3:00
over time, but for right now, I got to
3:01
use the box. Now, as far as the recipe
3:03
goes, this is a this is a treasured
3:05
family recipe. It's not necessarily a
3:07
Christmas cookie cuz I've eaten it all
3:09
year long, but it is often made by my
3:10
family at Christmas time. It's a coveted
3:12
family recipe, so I can't screw it up.
3:14
The only change I'm making to the recipe
3:15
is it calls for mint chocolate chips.
3:17
I'm using peppermint extract, but it
3:18
should be good. We shall see. But if the
3:20
measurements are off, I will know cuz
3:22
I've had these cookies a million times
3:23
before and they're my favorite cookies.
3:24
It's time for our first measurement. I'm
3:27
really kind of curious how these work.
3:28
First up, 1 and 1/2 cups of flour. So,
3:30
let's see how this works as a measuring
3:32
cup.
3:37
According to this box here, this should
3:39
be half a cup.
3:42
Next up, 1 and 1/2 tesp of baking
3:44
powder. This one I'm curious about. And
3:46
we're going to have to get in there.
3:48
Will it reach? Once again, I have to
3:49
refer to my chart here because I don't
3:51
have it memorized and I can't read them.
3:52
All right. So, this is going to be one
3:53
teaspoon. Let's see how that works.
3:57
We have one teaspoon. And this one
3:59
should be half a teaspoon. Can I read
4:01
it? I can kind of read it, but not easy.
4:06
Half a teaspoon. Next up, 1/4 teaspoon
4:09
of salt. That's going to be this small
4:11
one here. 1/4 teaspoon of salt. There we
4:15
go. I'm just going to give this a little
4:16
mix and then set this aside. Let's get a
4:18
bigger bowl here for this step. We're
4:20
going to add one cup of granulated
4:22
sugar. Using our one cup measurement
4:24
again.
4:29
Observation I'm noticing is this handle
4:31
is kind of small. I mean, you're using
4:32
basically a measuring spoon as a handle.
4:34
I mean, it works, but it's kind of
4:35
small. 6 tablespoons of softened butter.
4:44
One and a half teaspoons of vanilla
4:45
extract. By the way, I did the math on
4:47
this. I think this was $5 for a 1oz
4:49
bottle. That equates to about $640 per
4:53
gallon. So, you thought gas was
4:54
expensive? Try some vanilla extract
4:56
instead. Gas seems cheap at that rate.
4:58
But I digress. This should be 1 and 12
5:01
teaspoons.
5:03
One teaspoon going in. Half teaspoon
5:05
going in.
5:07
Now, for the most important ingredient,
5:09
half a teaspoon of peppermint extract.
5:12
Now mix.
5:17
Now I need one cup of chocolate chips.
5:21
These will be melted in the microwave.
5:24
Adding the melted chocolate.
5:32
Adding two eggs.
5:39
Now we slowly add in our dry mix.
5:47
For my final ingredient, a half a cup of
5:50
chocolate chips.
5:52
And then we just have to mix those in.
5:59
Cover and chill for 1 hour. Then we
6:02
start baking. All right, my dough is
6:04
nicely chilled. Now all I have to do is
6:05
roll in some powdered sugar and then
6:06
bake them. I've got my assembly line
6:08
going on here. dough, powdered sugar,
6:11
baking sheet. I'm kind of looking
6:12
forward to seeing how these taste and if
6:13
these measuring cups and spoons were
6:15
actually accurate. Here we go.
6:23
First batch ready to go. Let's throw
6:25
these in the oven. See how they turn
6:26
out. This is the big test.
6:43
And it comes to this. The first batch
6:45
has been cooled. Look at that's
6:46
beautiful. Look at that. I got three
6:48
batches total. One is cooling now. One
6:50
is in the oven. And these have cooled
6:52
and they look perfect. They look like
6:53
they're supposed to. The entire point of
6:55
this video is to see how these measuring
6:56
cups and spoons actually work. So, if it
6:58
doesn't work, you get all the blame. If
7:00
it does work, you get none of the glory
7:02
because you're supposed to work, right?
7:03
I'm happy to report that visually they
7:05
look like they're supposed to, but I
7:06
didn't make them look at them. I made
7:07
them to eat them. And that's next. I've
7:09
randomly chosen one out of the stack
7:11
here. Let's see how it goes. And here we
7:13
go.
7:23
They're perfect. They're exactly as
7:24
they're supposed to be. Even using the
7:26
peppermint extract instead of the mint
7:27
chocolate chips, that worked perfectly.
7:29
So, you may not be perfect, but you pull
7:30
through in the clutch on this one. All
7:31
right. So, as far as these measuring
7:33
cups goes, which was the point of this
7:34
video, I don't like the way they stand
7:35
up like that. That's not cool. I don't
7:37
like that you can see, you can't really
7:38
see the measurement inside and it's a
7:40
little bit awkward to hold them in
7:41
certain situations, but they are cute
7:44
and the measurements seem accurate. So,
7:45
as far as I can tell, if you don't mind
7:47
some limitations, it is kind of a cute
7:49
display piece for your kitchen. If
7:50
you're one to have cute designs, this
7:52
could work well. If you're looking for
7:54
the absolute perfect measuring cups and
7:56
spoons, they may not be it. One final
7:58
note, I did run these through the
8:00
dishwasher and they came out perfectly.
8:01
So, they are dishwasher safe as
8:03
expected, but in the end, my beloved
8:05
cookies came out perfectly. And these
8:07
strange snail-shaped measuring cups and
8:10
spoons did hold their own in a realworld
8:12
test. Now, they may not be perfect, but
8:13
they did work. If you end up making
8:15
these cookies or if you want me to test

other things in this way, join my

I'll see you next time.
