From Fox 5, it's time for a good night, New York
0:07
Good evening, I'm Crystal Young. Welcome to good night, New York. Now, Ryan is out for the next few days
0:13
He's going to be relaxing in Hawaii. So he'll be back next Wednesday, relaxed and chill and tan
0:19
But in the meantime, we're going to have a few people sitting on the couch with me
0:23
filling in for Ryan tomorrow. Dancehall artist and reggae musician Ding Dong will be here
0:29
And then on Friday, actor of stage and screen, Norm Lewis will be here
0:34
And guess what? We're going to keep it going because on Monday, long-time actress, she has the most amazing memory
0:40
We'll prove it. Mary Lou Henner, she's going to be on the couch with me
0:44
So we are still going to have a lot of fun for the next couple of days
0:48
So hang in there. It's not going to be bumpy at all. Now, speaking of celebrities, we're less than two weeks away from one of the biggest fashion events of the year
0:58
I am talking about the Met Gala. It features all kinds of celebrities and amazing outfits
1:04
This year's theme is super fine tailoring black style. And for Vogue's live stream
1:11
the magazine just announced who's going to host on Tuesday. I've been doing the Met Gala live stream for a long time. Now I got my girls joining me. It's
1:22
going to be crazy. So I'm excited that we get to do this together. Me too. I cannot wait. It's me
1:27
and Tiana at the arrival. Lala at the top of the stairs
1:32
Hey! May 5th at 6 p.m. Don't be late. It's gonna be good
1:38
Everybody's about to look super fine. I can't wait. Super fine. Oh, I love it. I concur
1:44
Super fine. Everyone looks amazing at the Met Gala. Now, Saturday Night Live's Ego
1:50
Odom, actress and singer Tiana Taylor and actress and producer Lala Anthony will serve as the host of Vogue's live stream, which begins, like you just heard, at 6 p.m. sharp on the magazine's website
2:04
I have to say the Met Gala is the only place where you see people from the sports world
2:09
You see actresses. You see singers. It is always, always an interesting time
2:14
And you know what? Good Night New York will, of course, be at the event
2:19
I'll be there on the red carpet. And my colleague, Ryan, he'll definitely be back by then
2:24
he's going to have another little section of fun. But speaking of celebrities and designers and
2:31
people that look amazing and help people look amazing, I recently spoke to someone who is
2:37
just outstanding in the world of fashion. I'm not even going to say his name because I did a whole
2:43
piece on him. So this is really, really good. For Laquan Smith, fashion was always his passion
2:50
Originally from St. Albans, Queens, he attended the high school of art and design
2:55
before his mother abruptly moved the family to Delaware. I would come back on the weekends and see my grandparents
3:02
and go to the fashion district and go to Manhattan and do all the things that really fulfilled me creatively
3:07
And I had a small little business. I was making custom designs. This was also during the MySpace era
3:13
so I would meet really fabulous girls out of Brooklyn and New York and Upper East Side
3:17
and I sort of had a small hustle. It was word of mouth. I was just inspired to create for women who loved dressing up and wanted to be the center of attention
3:28
It's no wonder his designs have caught the eye of powerhouse celebs like Ciara
3:33
Queen B, Beyonce is a fan. She's worn his looks many times
3:37
And then there's J-Lo, who rocked this white cutout number for Rolling Stone magazine
3:43
Laquan says designing for former Vice President Kamala Harris was also a high
3:48
It's a black, beautiful, and brooded tequan gown that just really represented strength, power, and femininity
3:55
Recently, Laquan partnered with Samsung to create a limited edition capsule collection of loungewear and sleepwear called Lucid Dreams
4:06
I was just really fascinated by the technology and how I could infuse that in my collections
4:11
The collab celebrates technology, creativity, and the real luxury of a good night's sleep
4:17
I love to sleep. Now that I'm older, I really... I put it right to sleep, Laquan. I feel you on that one
4:24
I appreciate... It's underrated. Yeah, you know, and considering the stressful schedule that I have, you know
4:31
sleeping is essential for me in terms of how I create and how I go about my day to day
4:36
Through the Samsung collaboration, he was able to not only create beautiful clothes
4:40
but to become a mentor. As a struggling designer, the late Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley was his mentor
4:49
Now Laquan is paying it forward. They got a chance to come into my atelier for a week in preparation for working towards the show
4:58
You know, I was able to take them to the CFDA award, which is something that I never was able to do
5:03
I was really thrilled to have them be a part of, you know, this incredible partnership for them to sit at my table and also to work the room
5:10
That's what New York City is all about. As a Queens native Laquan says New York City will always influence his designs It the attitude It the weather It what you can do when it 40 degrees and it what you can do when it 75 degrees
5:25
I mean, I love the first introductory of fall. I love the juxtaposition, how the city has just a grit
5:31
but it also has a glamour to it. I couldn't leave without seeing a few standout pieces
5:35
from Laquan's current collection. So the first thing I want to point out
5:39
is that Laquan and I have got the same vibe. I messed it up a little bit the white sorry Laquan but you can see you know great minds think alike. Yes
5:47
So let's talk about some of the items on the rack. Right off the bat I approach the rack and we've got a ooooh
5:55
I mean these are some unapologetically wide legs. Yeah exactly. I think this is just a great selection today
6:04
The huge platform I mean this is just perfect. I mean it can go with a bodysuit, a blouse, you can pair it in any way you want to
6:11
and then for evening you can pair it with a sort of embroidered bodysuit
6:16
Wow. I suddenly turned into grandma. Okay, wait. Okay, so this does have a little pair of underwear underneath
6:22
It's built inside so she's fully secured. Okay, and wait, what happens right here? Whatever way you want to be at, man
6:28
Exactly. So she can do a bralette, a bandeau, nothing at all. Okay. And how gorgeous is this sequin gown
6:36
This is perfect for any wedding occasion or any dinner or gala
6:40
This is a celebrity fave. Two garments in one. It's actually a functional bathing suit
6:46
Okay. The great thing about it is that we've been doing this sort of built-in brief on all of our dresses
6:51
Oh, okay, nice. And so, yes, she can wear this on a yacht, on a boat, but then in the end she can sort of bring this little scrunch down
6:59
and it just becomes a little mini cocktail dress. Rihanna just rocked a maxi version at ASAP Rocky's birthday party
7:05
it's safe to say Laquan Smith designs are for the confident woman who loves blending edgy and classy all at the same time
7:15
So Laquan Smith, I'll be looking for him on the red carpet. I'll be looking for who he's dressing on the red carpet
7:21
Amazing guy, a talent that just keeps getting more and more spectacular
7:26
So up next, we're going to talk about how technology has actually made it easier for high school and college students to get into bars
7:35
I'll be joined by a longtime security professional. We're chatting about fake IDs
7:40
Y'all know y'all remember those and more. Good night. New York. Let me see. All right. That's good
7:51
It's hard to trace, I guess. Wait, you changed your name to
7:56
McLovin? McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogle? What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer
8:04
Oh, they let you pick any name you want, but you get down there. And you landed on McLovin
8:08
Yeah, I was between that and Muhammad. Why the f*** would it be between that and Muhammad
8:13
Why don't you pick a common name like a normal person? Muhammad is the most commonly used name on earth
8:17
Read a f***ing book for once. Fogle, have you ever actually met anyone named Muhammad? Have you actually ever met anyone named McLovin
8:22
All right, the days of fake IDs. Many of us remember them
8:26
Well, remember when you used to make them up in the basement or in your dorm room and you thought you were getting over and sometimes it actually worked
8:34
Well, things have gotten more high tech, making it tougher for bouncers and security teams at clubs and bars to turn away underage drinkers
8:44
Now, we have someone that knows a lot about this because he has 25 years of experience in nightclub hospitality in NYC
8:53
Alexi Jimenez, welcome to Good Night, New York. You're welcome. Thank you for having me
8:56
All right. So let's just go back before we go forward. Yes
9:00
A lot of people remember those fake IDs. A lot of them were pretty darn good
9:05
You got it laminated like it might be real. It was your photo, but all the information on it was not correct
9:11
So now, do people still do that? The fake ID? I feel like that's very, like, 1990
9:16
Well, we still do it. Okay. And they do it high tech. They do it even better. It's harder. Really
9:21
It's harder to detect. Okay, so what is it that technology is doing for them that's making it so like this could be real
9:27
Well, you got Photoshop, you got companies from China, you know, you have everything
9:33
Well, for example, the card readers, the ID readers. Yes, yes. What they read is the barcode
9:39
Oh, okay. Well, what's the barcode tell them? The day they were born
9:44
Okay. The names, everything, all the info that you used to have to print before
9:49
Right. It's all in the barcode. Okay. So all you do now is just print your photo
9:53
Yeah. You send for the barcode anywhere online. I didn't know that a barcode
9:59
But hold on. You got to get the material. You got to get the card. The actual card
10:04
The paper. Yeah, yeah. Right. And that's all accessible. That's all available
10:10
Readily available. Where, like you were saying before, you have to go to the dorm. Yeah, yeah
10:14
There was someone in college, someone in your school that had to hook up
10:19
Right. That had to connect. Right. not anymore is go online you fill in that book you feel like
10:24
for an application. Wow I want this and want this and want that three days in the mail. My mouth is hanging open you can tell
10:32
I didn graduate like last year or the year before like I had no idea that you could buy a barcode and like the information that kind of goes with it you buy an id yeah but the id comes with the barcode
10:43
behind and that's the info you put in that's the info you put in that's when you scan yeah
10:49
well you know nowadays i mean there's all the ways but basically yeah yeah now how do you detect it
10:55
how exactly that was my next question so okay i know you got the glasses but they're not x-ray
11:00
How do you know when it's not real? You got to get a feel for them. So usually a person has a fake ID
11:06
You know, they come very, you know, tentative. And they're like, this is my ID
11:09
So over the years, you get a feel for them. You go like, okay
11:13
And the way they look. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then you ask a few questions. You go like, okay, let me see
11:18
Were you born this day? Where are you from? Is this really you? And once you start getting all nervous and fidgety, you go like, oh, that's not really you
11:25
Well, you know what? No. Right. All right. So listen, I can keep your ID
11:30
or you could go somewhere else. Then there's also like, for example, the photo. Yeah, yeah
11:34
That's the one thing that's crazy. So, you know, they put the photo, they still kind of trying to make it at home. You know, you got these high-tech printers
11:41
laser printers and all that, which is a mess. But the photo, the background is always like
11:46
washed up. So you got a photo of me and a plain blue, sky blue background
11:53
Yes. It just doesn't work. You can immediately go like, no, that's not you
11:56
Wow. So how about if you have all this bravado? You know, like if you kind of come like, you know, this is me and you're not even going to question it
12:03
You might get over it. Okay. So a lot is in the personality, too
12:09
Personality, the way you carry yourself, the way you present yourself. But then ultimately, it's just the idea
12:15
And you know what? We card as hard as we can. Okay. We do. We do it
12:18
I mean, you know, we don't want things to happen after or before. And you're in mind
12:23
But then again, you know what? It just happens. Yeah. But it's the bravado
12:26
the way you carry yourself, the way you look. Like if you're over makeup, come on
12:31
Right. You're trying to make yourself look older and you're like, come on, girl. No. I know you're 19
12:36
And even some guys, you know, not with the like the stache. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, all that that's going on and the beard. Wow
12:42
Come on. Okay. But see, that's why people like you have been in the business a long time
12:47
You're intuitive. Yes. You got the glasses. You got the know-how. You like, you know what
12:52
I'm just going to pluck the fakes out. Right. Right. And it seems like you know how to ask them and get some answers that make sense
12:59
And you've worked at several places throughout the city, so I feel like you know. Name a few
13:04
I've worked at, I first started at Life, Club Life, Spa, Suede, La Marina, Calais
13:11
Wow. I've been around. Try Baker Grand, I used to have parties
13:16
Yes, yes, yes. About 61, I used to do parties there too
13:20
I mean, you name it, I've been around. Okay. I've been around. This is not a place in New York that I don't know
13:23
All right. Well, nightlife is changing, but you are remaining the same
13:28
And look, and now the word is out. When people roll up on a club and you're standing there, they know
13:32
Don't even try it. Don't even try it. Mr. Jimenez knows what he's doing. Don't do it
13:36
Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Get that ID taken away
13:40
Please. I love it. Now, when you say to people, I'll just take this ID, they'll like to, do they ever go like
13:46
okay, and just walk away? Oh, no, no. They'll be like, please, please, can I get it back? It cost me $100
13:51
Can I get it back? Right, right. Just give it back to me. Come on, please. They're like, this is a bad night
13:55
I'm busted. I'm not going to get in. And you're going to keep my ID? Yeah. All right. All right
14:00
Well, keep doing what you're doing. We need to keep these young kids safe. Yeah. I mean, it's generational
14:04
We just want to keep them safe, have a good time. You know, but just do it safely. And then again, if you're not of age, and we understand, you know, when you go to Europe
14:11
you go to other places, yeah, you can party like that. Yeah. But here in the States, you can't. I like it
14:15
You can't. Yeah. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. All right. Thank you so much. You're welcome
14:19
You're welcome. Keep doing it. And on this side of the bridge, the war against underage drinking escalated today
14:27
Mayor Koch said the city has begun issuing injunctions against those places that make phony ID cards that kids use to get into the bars
14:34
Frank Grimes has the story. Khabarama Incorporated on East 8th Street in Manhattan is one of many places, police say
14:40
where hundreds of phony identification cards and documents are manufactured every week
14:45
It's one of three such places cops raided last night. They made a total of three arrests and confiscated material used to make false identification
14:54
Khabarama and the Times Department Store on West 42nd Street are two of five businesses the city and state brought civil actions against today for the same reason
15:02
We hope today's action will get a message through to the phony ID industry that the city and the state is serious about cracking down on that problem
15:11
which gives our young people access to bars and clubs where they might drink excessively with potentially tragic results
15:19
The recent attention to the issue of phony identification stems from the circumstances of the murder of 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park on August 26th
15:28
She and her accused killer, 19-year-old Robert Chambers, had been drinking in Dorian's Bar on 2nd Avenue and 84th Street just before she was killed
15:36
Friends of the two admitted to police and reporters that they all had phony ID indicating they were 21
15:42
ID cards like these on display at City Hall today Phony college identification cards without the word novelty stamped on the front and back as required by law since March of this year Flanked by Mayor Koch and New York State Attorney General Robert Abrams two teenage employees of the city Consumer Affairs Department said they paid between 8 and 20 bucks a piece for the cards
16:03
No questions asked. We went into the store, they gave you a slip of paper
16:07
you filled it out, and they gave me the I. City attorneys will be back in state Supreme Court next week
16:12
asking a judge to order the five businesses to open up their financial records
16:16
The city wants to see how many false IDs the stores have sold
16:20
since the novelty law took effect on March 22nd. They want to fine them $500 for each phony card
16:27
In Manhattan, I'm Frank Rimes, Channel 5 News. So, still ahead on Good Night, New York, it's Earth Month
16:33
and the winery that we are going to visit that's going to tell us about sustainable wines is fabulous
16:39
That's right, you can drink in a healthier way. Journalist and author Mandy Naglich joins Good Night, New York when we come right back
16:48
So, stick with that. Well, April is Earth Month, and after returning from two global sustainability conferences held in Barcelona
16:58
our next guest, journalist and author, Mandy Naglish, has some ideas on sustainable wines
17:04
And I know you know what you are talking about, so thank you for joining me
17:09
Yes, it's good to be back here and back from Barcelona from the Paradiso Sustainability Summit
17:13
What kinds of things do you learn at that kind of a summit? So it is innovators from all over the drinks industry
17:19
We have bartenders, bar owners, brand owners, and I learned about all different ways that
17:24
we think about sustainability, right? Recycling, waste, and what we should look up for on our home bar, right
17:29
We want to build a sustainable home bar. I like that idea. Yes. Yes. Think about it
17:33
We're here. Grab for a wine or a spirit. Right. Okay. It's the Earth Day after party, day after Earth Day
17:38
So let's try some sustainable wines. Let's do it. Okay. This is our white
17:42
It is the Garzon Albariño from Uruguay. Okay. You can smell it really fresh, kind of like a sauvignon blanc
17:48
And everything on this table today is a world's first at something
17:52
This is the world's first winery to be LED certified. LEED certified
17:58
So usually you would see that on a building. But this is the actual winery. They have a green roof that's really fostering local plants, local species
18:06
And it smells incredible. You can tell the grapes are happy under that green roof. Right, the grapes are like, yes, we like it
18:11
If you love a Sappy Bee, you're going to love an Albarino. And this Garzan is great. It's actually at my favorite wine store in the city, Central Perk
18:17
I don't know if you've been. No, I've heard of it though. Yes. That's good
18:21
We got our white. Smooth. We got to go to our red. Let's do it. Let's do it. So this is going to be a Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile
18:28
Ah, Chile. They have great ones. Yeah. And you can see, you know, we've got some roots on the bottle right here
18:34
You can see how much they care about their plants. They are the first ever winery to be 100% sustainable from the wines of Chile
18:41
So they have to go through testing. Yeah. They are considered, scores 100%. Oh, I like it
18:46
What's better than 100? Exactly. Nothing. Okay, hold on. Let's sit. Yeah, so we're smelling
18:50
You're getting those deep red fruits, right? And a little bit of that, like, oak at the end, right
18:55
That little leather is really nice. That's another smooth wine. And it's incredible because it's under $15
19:02
So we love that. We love it coming from Chile. It's a little bit of an up-and-coming wine region
19:07
And all of their wines, they're really paying attention to how much water they use, not a drop too much
19:12
And so you can tell they're happy with the water they get because of how great it tastes. Yeah. It works out in the glass for sure
19:19
Exactly. We're going to take a short break. We're going to come back, and then we're going to talk about what's on the rest of the table
19:24
spirits that you need for Earth Month and beyond. Stick with us
19:31
Okay, I'm back with Mandy Neglage, and she knows all about wines and spirits
19:35
We're talking about things that are good for you and good for the Earth. So now let's talk about spirits
19:41
What is this bottle here you have? So this was at the Paradiso Sustainability Summit in Barcelona
19:45
You gotta give it a sniff because it is the world's first climate positive gin
19:51
Because it's made with, if you smell you can't tell, but it's made with green peas. It has no green pea flavor, but all the benefits of being made from peas way more sustainable
20:00
uses way less energy. Wow. So climate positive means it actually takes more carbon out of the environment than it adds
20:07
So it's kind of for saving the world with this gin. Oh, I like it. Saving the world. And I love bartenders, love it
20:13
It's amazing and like a little Negroni at home. Do you get that nice little citrus punch on it
20:18
Oh, I do. I feel like it's so nice, right? Oh, yeah. It's like a little lemony, orangey thing at the end
20:22
You would never know it's peas. This is excellent. Drink your peas
20:26
Don't eat your peas. Drink your peas. Okay. And the last one. And this was brandy. This was also at the Paradiso Sustainability Summit
20:31
And they are just the world's first. They're investing in hospitality projects that are based around sustainability
20:37
This is so complex. It's made in a Solera style, the Torres 15 brandy
20:42
And just like the Nadar Gin, they're really thinking. this is from our BQ to sorry, but they're really thinking
20:47
about how can we contribute to sustainability in the industry. They invested 30,000 euros in projects around the world
20:53
Mexico, Spain, Norway to really support bartenders who are trying to make a more sustainable industry
20:58
All right, thank you so much. What I love is they taste amazing and the prices are
21:02
right so Earth Month and the next month and next month and next month go sustainable
21:07
Thank you so much for joining us. Family Feud with Steve Harvey is up next for now
21:12
I am Crystal Young. Don't forget to make it up
