Brazil’s federal police on Saturday took former President Jair Bolsonaro into custody after he was deemed a flight risk for tampering with his ankle monitor using a soldering iron, bringing an end to months of house arrest while he appeals his conviction for plotting a coup. His detention in a 12-square-metre room at federal police headquarters in Brasília marks the latest setback for Bolsonaro, coming shortly after US President Donald Trump - once considered an ideological ally - rolled back tariffs that had been seen as an effort to undermine his prosecution.
