Brazilian court orders preemptive arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after being deemed a “concrete flight risk” while under house arrest. The former Brazilian president was convicted in September of plotting a military coup and sentenced to more than 27 years in prison, though he has remained under house arrest while his appeals proceed. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to detain the 70-year-old was a preventive measure prompted by “new facts” that had recently emerged.
