There are essentially 3 reasons your goldfish will be at the top of the tank gasping, and in this video, I share these reasons and offer solutions. Even though goldfish live in water, they still breathe oxygen as we do. The only difference is goldfish absorb the oxygen directly out of the water using their gills. When oxygen levels in the water drop, the goldfish will head to the surface. Can goldfish live in cold water? Although traditionally thought of as cold-water fish, goldfish can live happily in warm waters. In fact, many of the ‘fancy’ strains of goldfish do better when kept at temperatures in the low to mid-’70s. The higher temperature is better for their metabolism, leading to stronger, healthier fish. The optimum temperature for the ‘fancy’ strains of goldfish, such as Orandas, Fantails, and Ranchus is 70 – 76 degF.
