0:04
Adobe Premiere Pro has a lot of built-in
0:06
transitions but if you're looking to
0:08
spice up your transition game you might
0:10
want to try creating custom transitions
0:12
in Adobe After Effects hey everyone this
0:15
is Mason from filter grade and today I'm
0:17
going to show you the fundamentals of
0:19
transitions and After Effects and how to
0:21
create some cool ones you might see in
0:23
videos you watch everyday we'll be
0:25
starting with some basic ones
0:27
transitions that exist as presets in
0:29
Premiere Pro already and then working up
0:31
to some advanced transitions that
0:32
require After Effects specifically to
0:36
master transitions will be utilizing key
0:38
framing masking and the graph editor
0:39
tool which uses curves in a similar way
0:42
as the pen tool will be specifically
0:45
using key framing for a lot of the
0:46
examples in this video and it will
0:48
involve four key framed points the first
0:50
keyframe is a starting point and will be
0:52
set to the normal properties of your
0:54
clip the second keyframe is the center
0:56
of the transition and will be set to the
0:58
highest or lowest value in your
0:59
transition your third point will be at
1:01
the exact same time and set to the same
1:03
exact values except it will be applied
1:05
to your second clip the one your
1:07
transition into and then your final
1:09
keyframe point is your end point which
1:10
will likely have the same values as your
1:12
very first keyframe and of course
1:14
applied to the end of your second clip
1:16
so we're going to start with something
1:19
that you probably use in Adobe Premiere
1:22
Pro almost every time you make a video
1:23
and that's a fade or a cross dissolve so
1:27
we have our top clip here and our second
1:29
clip here and to do this we're going to
1:31
have to cross them over a little bit so
1:34
now our second clip is under the first
1:36
one and we're going to open up our
1:40
transform properties and we're going to
1:42
set the opacity we're gonna put a
1:44
keyframe right here this will be just a
1:49
and then that's set to 100 move to the
1:53
end of this clip and set it to zero and
1:57
that gives us this so far alright that's
2:03
pretty fast let's let's make it a full
2:06
second so we'll just move that keyframe
2:10
over there so now we have this long fade
2:16
another thing you can do with these
2:18
keyframes is to ease it in easiest way
2:21
to do this is to select all your
2:22
keyframes right click go to keyframe
2:25
assistant and say easy ease in alright
2:31
now we're going to do a basic wipe so
2:34
let's open the transform settings of our
2:35
top level go to the beginning of this
2:38
transition set the position and then
2:41
we're going to go to the end of it and
2:42
then we're gonna do a little bit of math
2:44
here this is a 1920 by 1080 piece of
2:47
footage and we're going to add our width
2:49
to the position so 960 + 1920 and you
2:54
can just type in that math and After
2:56
Effects will do it for you and now that
2:59
moves across the screen right out of
3:01
place but you probably don't want your
3:03
transition to look like this if you do
3:04
then you're done but you probably want
3:07
the bottom layer to move with the top
3:08
layer so we're going to take this and
3:12
we're going to subtract 1920 set a
3:21
keyframe and then set the final keyframe
3:25
to positive 960 and now they'll move in
3:30
together so that's a simple wipe
3:33
transition and then of course you can
3:36
select them all right click keyframe
3:37
assistant easy ease in to get a smoother
3:41
effect to add to the effect and really
3:44
any of these you can toggle on motion
3:46
blur and then when the layers animate
3:48
it'll have a motion blur that makes it
3:50
seem a little bit more smooth now we're
3:53
going to do a wipe again but we're going
3:56
to use masking for it
3:58
so we have our Clips in the same place
4:02
you create a line and we're going to use
4:05
that to wipe to our next layer so let's
4:08
grab our rectangle tool we're gonna zoom
4:11
out a little bit and we're going to make
4:15
our rectangle let's fill that with white
4:18
and no stroke so now we have our layer
4:25
and we're going to put it over to the
4:30
side and then let's find where our Clips
4:34
cross over and we'll set the position
4:38
right here then go to the end of the
4:40
transition and we're gonna move it over
4:46
here and then let's continue moving it
4:48
just right to the edge so we're going to
4:51
use a mask as a ball with this line so
4:52
make sure you have your top layer
4:53
selected click the rectangle tool and
4:56
then create a mask now we're going to
5:00
animate this mask so open up your mask
5:04
transform properties so now we can set a
5:08
keyframe for the mask path go to our
5:11
next point and then simply move the mask
5:17
all the way to the end and now when we
5:21
play it back we can see that that layer
5:24
disappears along with the mask and of
5:26
course we can select all these and say
5:29
easy ease in to make it a little
5:32
smoother and then we can turn on motion
5:34
blur and now let's see that with the
5:39
line now line as motion blur as well
5:43
makes you not really notice any
5:46
inconsistencies or problems with the
5:48
transition makes it a whole lot smoother
5:53
so that is a basic wipe with a line
5:56
super basic transitions that are a lot
5:59
of fun and pretty easy to do now we're
6:01
going to go to something more advanced
6:05
now we're going to do what's called a
6:07
pump transition so we're going to go
6:09
where the two clips transition make sure
6:10
we're on the top layer press s to get
6:13
into our scale and type in something
6:15
like 150 you just gonna want to zoom in
6:17
and then keyframe that now we're gonna
6:20
go about half a second back in time
6:24
we're gonna set the scale back to 100 so
6:27
now we have this we have that slight
6:29
zoom and now on our second bottom layer
6:32
we're gonna go to the first frame of
6:34
that open up our scale settings set the
6:36
very first frame to 150 and once again
6:39
go about half a second set it to 150
6:45
keyframe that go about half a second
6:48
forward and set it back to 100 so now we
6:52
have this so this is going to pump in to
6:57
the first layer and come out of the
6:59
second layer so now we're going to
7:02
select all these points right click and
7:04
easy ease in let's go ahead and open the
7:07
graph editor and if you click on the
7:09
scale you can see these lines here and
7:13
what we're gonna do is we're going to
7:15
adjust the curves so that they speed
7:17
ramp differently so we're going to grab
7:20
this curve and make it a little bit like
7:23
this so it's a lot sharper of an incline
7:27
and as you can see that has a nice speed
7:31
ramp into it so now let's go into the
7:32
other one and change this curve to be
7:35
the same and now when we play it back we
7:40
get a nice smooth ramp up into the speed
7:43
and then back out of it and as a final
7:46
touch we're going to make sure that
7:48
motion blur is applied to both layers
7:51
and that way when we run through it we
7:54
can see it has a nice blur effect to
7:58
make it look more natural
8:01
and that's it that's a pump that's a
8:03
super common effect transition that
8:06
people put into videos and it's that
8:08
easy it takes seconds now we're going to
8:10
do what's called a pan crop so firstly
8:14
we're gonna go to our effects and we're
8:15
going to grab motion tile and apply that
8:18
to both of our clips we're going to
8:21
check to mirror edges on both of those
8:23
but for the values we'll get to those
8:25
later it's now let's go to our first
8:28
clip and about half a second for our
8:30
transition we're going to set the scale
8:34
to 100% and then we're going to go right
8:40
before the cut and set it higher let's
8:43
start at around 180 but you can adjust
8:45
that as you see fit and now we're going
8:49
to go to the first frame of the second
8:51
clip we're going to adjust the scale
8:53
this one's actually going to be lower so
8:54
let's set to something like 70 and now
8:57
here's where we can change the motion
8:59
tile settings so we can just grab those
9:02
until they're big enough to cover the
9:06
whole frame in this case it's about 150
9:10
each way cuz that's great so now that'll
9:14
cover any black space in the transition
9:16
so let's keyframe that scale then go
9:19
half a second into the future and then
9:22
set it back to a hundred percent scale
9:25
so now we have this which is similar to
9:30
the pump except in this case we're going
9:33
in both times so now we're going to grab
9:37
all the key frames set to easy ease in
9:43
now let's open up that graph editor
9:45
again and we're going to do the same
9:48
thing we were doing before so let's make
9:51
these lines super aggressive
9:59
and now we'll get this settle make them
10:04
start fast and then slow down and if you
10:07
want the reverse to happen you can just
10:09
reverse all these nodes for the opposite
10:12
effect now we're going to do a rotation
10:16
transition so again we're going to have
10:20
the motion tile added and we're going to
10:23
be using that again so let's go ahead
10:25
and keyframe half a second before the
10:27
cut press R for rotation we're going to
10:31
set that keyframe at zero and then we're
10:33
gonna go to the final frame and set the
10:37
rotation to minus 90 now we already have
10:39
the output height adjusted on motion
10:42
tile so we're good to go there and now
10:44
we have this rotation now go to the
10:50
rotation settings for our bottom clip
10:52
half a second in the future keyframe
10:54
zero at the end go to the very first
10:57
frame and do positive 90 degrees and in
11:01
once again the emotion tile is already
11:03
on so now we have this it's like a
11:07
continuous rotation as you can see we're
11:10
gonna have to adjust the motion tile
11:12
both directions to make that cover
11:23
so just make sure you don't have any
11:25
black space during the rotation and now
11:29
we're going to select all those nodes
11:30
and we're going - easy easy
11:33
all keyframes so for added effect let's
11:40
go ahead and turn on motion blur so now
11:43
we have that blurred effect as you can
11:45
see it looks a little weird so we're
11:46
gonna have to mess with the graph again
11:48
so let's go ahead and open that graph
11:50
and we're going to adjust these down and
12:02
now we can see it goes how we want it
12:06
ramps in and then ramps back out another
12:11
very common transition that you see all
12:13
the time in videos these transitions
12:16
should have set you up with the basics
12:18
so now you can try experimenting with
12:20
whatever transitions you want and you
12:23
have that knowledge to go forth and make
12:25
something awesome that's all the
12:27
transitions we have for you today if you
