hello everybody and welcome to an After
0:06
Effects text animation tutorial today
0:08
I'm going to be giving you guys three
0:10
different ways that I like to animate
0:12
text with in After Effects using
0:13
absolutely nothing beyond what's already
0:15
built into the program so let's dive
0:18
right into it we have three examples
0:20
here three different text options that
0:21
we can show you guys exactly what we can
0:23
do so what I'm gonna do first is show
0:25
you guys the masks so with this first
0:27
layer selected I'm going to go and
0:29
select the rectangle tool you can
0:31
immediately see what this allows us to
0:33
do so we're going to drag this mask to
0:36
the bottom we're gonna give it a little
0:37
bit more room for the feather so what
0:40
that feather is gonna do is kind of make
0:41
it not so that it's such a harsh line so
0:44
I'm just going to show you guys an
0:46
example here you can see exactly what
0:47
that does so let's bring that to 20 and
0:52
he framed the path at the beginning 12
0:56
frames in which is about a half second
0:58
we're gonna go to our selection tool and
1:00
bring this mask up now what you can see
1:04
immediately is just what that does it
1:06
brings in the text now this is kind of
1:09
boring on its own it's a little
1:11
lackluster so what I like to do so I
1:14
have to hit P for my position and at the
1:16
end set a keyframe because that's where
1:18
the text is gonna stop and then then at
1:20
the beginning go in really any direction
1:23
I like to go up or down in this mask
1:24
because it is a vertical situation so
1:27
I'm gonna go down a little bit
1:28
your your distance can vary here and
1:31
what I'm gonna do is easy ease that
1:33
movement so what you can see is that
1:35
this text kind of just springs up into
1:37
action and this is a really cool way to
1:39
kind of introduce new characters in a
1:41
video or adding some text over b-roll if
1:44
that's something that you're looking to
1:45
do so this is a great way to kind of
1:48
just play with masks move your mask
1:50
around you can change your keyframes do
1:51
all sorts of different things with the
1:53
expansion the mask the movement and
1:54
really just play around with the mask in
1:57
that sense example number two what
2:00
everybody forgets is that After Effects
2:02
has amazing built-in solutions to text
2:05
animation look at all of these different
2:08
options that we can play with so what
2:09
I'm going to do is just show you a
2:10
couple so here's espresso a chart you
2:14
can kind of see exactly how that likes
2:17
to work if I can get it to actually play
2:20
since my computers a little bit on the
2:23
leg in Alaska's is just beginning of it
2:25
there we go
2:26
so you can kind of see what this does
2:28
now it seems as if this is in fact
2:31
that's larger than the conversation size
2:33
so what I'm gonna do is just go to
2:35
composition and change it to let's just
2:38
say nine seconds oops and then if we
2:45
zoom out there we go you can see those
2:47
keyframes so you can see exactly what
2:52
this does it really has a good way to
2:54
just kind of bring in the text it's a
2:56
cool little different effect so that's
2:58
one way that I like to use these
3:00
built-in effects another one that I
3:02
think is arguably even more effective is
3:04
the typewriter so it's pretty plain Jane
3:07
in this case I'm going to need to
3:08
probably bring the composition a little
3:11
bit larger again so let's just make it
3:13
fourteen seconds here's our key frames
3:15
you can hit you twice to be able to see
3:18
them select them bring them over and
3:21
trim our composition back down so
3:24
typewriter pretty straightforward it's a
3:27
typewriter but what really is cool about
3:29
this is being able to change where those
3:31
key frames are and changing the speed of
3:34
it so if you've got a long paragraph
3:35
that you're trying to type on while
3:37
maybe an interviewee is going through a
3:40
quote that you want to just the show
3:42
on-screen as they're talking about it
3:43
you can have different effects and you
3:45
can change so I can add this 22% and
3:49
let's just say I dragged this out so if
3:50
they're talking slowly at first and then
3:52
they speed up or change pace within that
3:55
quote you can go and you can do that
3:56
right in this program you can go and you
3:58
can do all of those things right within
4:00
these effects and it's really cool to do
4:03
that as well the third example that I
4:06
want to show you guys is other effects
4:09
that you can use within these text
4:13
animations so what I like to do is I
4:15
like to do Gaussian blur this is
4:16
probably one of my favorite ways to do
4:18
this I like to go and let's just show
4:22
you guys what a hundred looks like so a
4:23
hundred looks pretty darn good so let's
4:26
just say that's what we want to be so at
4:28
the end we're gonna do this
4:30
the key frame here hit the opacity bring
4:33
this down to zero and if we just go
4:35
forward a second will bring down the
4:38
blurriness to zero the opacity to a
4:40
hundred and you can immediately see what
4:43
that does for us now what I like to also
4:45
do in these situations is kind of play
4:47
with the scale a little bit so if we go
4:50
and we do 115 and we hit the scale at
4:53
the beginning and then a second in let's
4:55
just say even a second and a half we go
4:58
down to a hundred what this does is it
5:00
really just kind of helps the text fade
5:03
in in a really cool way so I like to use
5:06
this over cinematic b-roll if I'm
5:08
announcing an location and I'm making a
5:10
video that's let's just say I'm
5:11
traveling to Maui and I'm making a
5:13
travel video on Maui this is exactly how
5:16
I would introduce that location so I
5:18
would have this text it would blur in it
5:20
would be really cool I'd probably slow
5:22
it down a little bit so I can go in and
5:25
I can kind of just let's just drag all
5:27
these out you can kind of just see
5:28
exactly what that can look like another
5:31
way that I like to do this let's just
5:34
undo all of these things cuz I like to
5:37
use linear wipes now this is another way
5:41
to do the masks what I really want to
5:43
just show you guys all of the cool
5:44
things that you can do with what After
5:46
Effects already provides you I went
5:48
ahead and changed the wipe angle to 270
5:51
because as you can see it's kind of
5:54
backwards off the bat which I don't
5:56
understand necessarily but we're just
5:58
gonna go and change that so 100% is
6:01
technically at the beginning 0% is
6:03
technically the end so we can go through
6:05
and have this be a hundred percent even
6:08
just masking it let's just do 25 with
6:11
the feather there and we can do
6:13
transition completion and then go 12
6:16
frames in drop this down to zero and you
6:19
can see exactly what that looks like now
6:22
let's say we want this to go out and
6:25
animate out but in the opposite
6:27
direction because if we go here and we
6:29
do this from the same capacity if we go
6:33
here and hit you you again to bring
6:35
these up add a keyframe here and then go
6:38
back down to well up to 100 I should say
6:41
you can see that it goes back
6:43
words say we want that to be a little
6:45
different say we wanted to go still from
6:47
left to right animating out what we can
6:50
do is we can go here and change the
6:53
angle so we'll keyframe the angle right
6:55
before that transition begins so what I
6:57
did there is I'm using command or
6:59
control and the arrow keys to go just
7:02
one keyframe left or right and then what
7:05
we can do here is go to 90 and then you
7:08
can see it animates just the same way so
7:11
it goes left to right in both directions
7:14
I hope this helps you guys get off the
7:16
right foot there's so many other things
7:18
that you can do with in after-effects
7:20
just to give you guys a quick example of
7:21
some of the crazy things that you can do
7:23
I'm just going to add a CC lens effect
7:26
this is one of my favorites going back
7:28
into my early editing days this is
7:31
something that I used a lot so I can go
7:34
and bring this in let's just bring that
7:38
there and then 500 you can see it kind
7:42
of gives a really cool zoom style effect
7:46
it kind of just flows right in and it's
7:50
just really cool there's so many things
7:51
you can do within After Effects I always
7:53
say to people that are new to After
7:54
Effects that if you can imagine it After
7:57
Effects can somehow make it happen so if
7:59
you want to see some more ideas in more
8:01
ways that anything can be a possibility
8:04
leave some thoughts in the comments
8:05
below we would love to hear what you
8:06
guys want to see thank you so much for
8:08
watching and we will see you guys next
8:10
time
