Although the Sheltie is a small dog, measuring no more than 39cm at the withers, it is a strong dog with inexhaustible energy. In addition, this breed has harmonious proportions, grace, and elegance. And for its cheerful disposition, optimism it is preferred as a pet by many dog lovers.
In the northeast of Scotland are the Shetland Islands. This place is not only a witness to historical events, but also the place of origin of shepherd dogs Sheltie. Originally they had another name - Tuni dog. Shepherds were sure to keep these dogs with them, as they had the unique ability to keep the herd of pets from scattering and getting lost during their walks.
In the shortest time, the Sheltie managed to chase a straggler animal to the right place and make sure that no one got lost. Tirelessly walking around the herd, they faithfully and diligently carried out their service during herding. The small stature of the sheep was not an obstacle for their work as long as there were not so many sheep. But as time passed, their flock began to increase, and it became more and more difficult for a small Sheltie to keep track of the increasing number of animals. Therefore, gradually shepherds began to prefer larger dogs that were better able to cope with such duties. And if it were not for sheltie lovers who liked such qualities of a dog as loyalty to their owners, active lifestyle, and cheerful disposition, this breed might not have survived.
But the situation was saved by enthusiastic cynologists, and at the beginning of XX century the breed was officially recognized, and its standards were to match the Collie breed, but in miniature size.
