The Bullmastiff is a large-sized guard dog breed. It belongs to Group 2 of the ICF classifications, to the Molosser section, to the Mastiff subsection. The breed was bred in England in the late 19th century, but was not officially recognized until the 20th century. The ancestors of the Bullmastiff were English Mastiff and extinct Old English Bulldog. This is where the name "Bullmastiff" came from.
Representatives of the breed have a large head and muscular build. The height of the Bullmastiff at the withers, can reach from 60 to 70 cm. The normal weight of the male dogs, on average, ranges from 50 to 60 kg. The average weight of the female is usually 45-46 kg. The coat is short, smooth, tightly fitting to the body. Characterized by red and pale color. There are representatives of dark color with stripes, the so-called tiger color. The muzzle and ears of the adult bullmastiff are almost always dark.
Despite their fierce appearance, these animals have a restrained and balanced character. They show tenderness and obedience to their owners, while always ready to protect. Because of their body constitution, these dogs require regular physical activity. This can be long walks, games, or training. It is best to train the dog from puppyhood. An adult Bullmastiff, on the other hand, may be stubborn during initial training. In general, these animals are patient and disciplined.
It is worth noting that Bullmastiffs may be distrustful of strangers. To avoid this, conscientious owners socialize the pet from an early age. Walks in crowded places and direct contact with strangers, such as friends or acquaintances of owners, are suitable as socialization.
