Hey ladies and gentlemen, Carmine Sabier here for Explain America and Whoopi Goldberg and
0:05
her friends at The View just got really bad news from the CEO of their parent company
0:12
Folks before we get started, please remember to like, comment, share and subscribe
0:16
Those little things really help us out and they help our channel continue to grow
0:20
So Disney CEO Bob Iger was a guest on CNBC's Squawk Box and he was talking about some of
0:29
the properties that Disney owns and possibly selling them because they're not performing
0:35
up to expectations. So what you need to know is that Disney owns ABC
0:40
ABC is the channel on which The View appears and that's where the connection is
0:44
In fact, the hosts often remind us, Disney, our parent company, they say that very often
0:50
So if ABC's not making money and The View's ratings are abysmal since President Donald
0:57
Trump or former President Donald Trump is no longer in the White House, well then what
1:03
does that say for the hosts of The View and their show
1:07
Let's take a look at what Bob Iger said. Well, you're going through all the things that we want to talk about in the time that
1:13
we have here, but I mean, just to sort of wrap up why you're staying, I mean, you said
1:18
in a memo to employees, you've made important and sometimes difficult decisions
1:23
You're proud of what you've accomplished, but there's more to accomplish before this
1:28
transformative work is complete. So what, again, what's transformative here and what is the work that is going to take
1:35
another perhaps two years or even more, even after you do leave, that needs to get done
1:41
Well, the transformative work, of course, is making sure that our cost structure reflects
1:46
the economic realities of the business, and that includes disruption. Transformative work is dealing with businesses that are no-growth businesses and what to
1:55
do about them, and particularly the linear business, which we are expansive in our thinking
2:00
about and we're going to look expansively about opportunities there because clearly
2:05
it's a business that is going to continue to struggle. Well, let's stop there for a second then and just let me ask you about it
2:11
We're talking, I guess, ABC, the network, the stations, but then the cable networks
2:16
as well. Yes, correct. FX, NatGeo. Is it possible you would look to sell them
2:22
We're going to be expansive. I think if you can interpret what that word means, we're just getting at that work
2:27
but we have to be open-minded and objective about the future of those businesses, yes
2:32
Meaning that they're not core to Disney? That they may not be core to Disney, yeah
2:37
There's clearly creativity and content that they create that is core to Disney, but the
2:41
distribution model, the business model that forms the underpinning of that business and
2:45
that has delivered great profits over the years is definitely broken, and we have to
2:51
call it like it is, and that's part of the transformative work we're doing. Right, well, we've been having this conversation for a very long time now
2:57
Well, I think what I'm saying is it's time. In terms of the erosion of the linear business, and now it's kind of closer to obsolescence
3:02
Well, you know, as I said when I came back, one of the things I discovered was that the
3:06
disruptive forces that have been preying on that business for a while are greater than
3:10
I thought. Now, again, the view is not mentioned by name, but a sale of ABC and a show that's struggling
3:16
in the ratings is not a fantastic combination. And if I was a member of the view, if I was on the cast of the view, I would need mental
3:25
help, but also I would be sweating bullets right now, because I think personally the
3:33
show has been failing since Barbara Walters passed away. May she rest in peace
3:39
And Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sonny Hostin, Anna Navarro, they just get more, I don't
3:45
know, bitter every day. And who wants to watch, even if you're a liberal, do you want to watch bitter people
3:50
every single day? That's why I think the ratings of that show are tanking, and if somebody buys ABC, or
3:56
even before a sale is made, just to save money on salary, I could see that show being cut
4:01
I could see the high-priced host being cut, and that would be very interesting
4:05
Let me know what you think in the comments. Also please remember to like, share, and subscribe
4:10
Those little things again really help us out. I'm Carmine Sabia, this is Explain America
4:15
We love you guys. God bless you. Take care, everybody
