Hey guys, it's Gail with Everything
0:02
Nash. Back again with Kari Pierce. I
0:04
love talking to you. A likewise. So much
0:07
to talk about. Um, Honest Woman coming
0:10
out. Girl, I am so excited for you. Tell
0:13
me all the things.
0:15
This album, I've been working on it for
0:17
almost two years. And for me, I got to a
0:21
place where
0:23
I needed to find the little girl again
0:26
that really wanted to sing country music
0:28
in the first place. And the high highs
0:31
and the low lows of success can be
0:34
lonely and um hard. And what this album
0:38
has done for me is it
0:41
really allowed me to return and find her
0:44
again and return to form using a
0:46
producer who really understands my
0:48
bluegrass and traditional country roots.
0:50
um my first time working with him, then
0:52
West uh on this side of things. And just
0:57
I think as a female in this business or
1:00
in any kind of entertainment field or
1:02
maybe just in general, you can um be
1:05
told to hide
1:08
your age or your life experience or
1:10
you're too much or all these different
1:12
things. And I think for me, I just
1:13
really wanted to show people more of me,
1:16
more of my vulnerability, more of the
1:18
things that matter to me. and also say,
1:20
you know what, I'm 36 and I'm proud of
1:22
it and I'm going to say it and the only
1:26
things that I've learned have come from
1:29
life experience that come with age. So,
1:31
I think age is an asset, girl. I love
1:35
that. And you've always been I was
1:37
thinking about this when I was getting
1:38
ready today. You've always been that
1:40
voice. You didn't succumb to the women
1:43
can't be played in country music. You
1:45
just stayed in your lane and look at you
1:46
now.
1:47
>> Yeah. Uh you you touched on it earlier,
1:49
bluegrass. So my husband loves that, by
1:52
the way. He's very excited. Um that's
1:54
not something people are doing a lot of
1:56
right now. So talk about your decision
1:57
to do that.
1:59
>> I I've always loved bluegrass. It's
2:01
always been something that I I wanted to
2:04
find the right time. Um I've wanted to
2:06
do a bluegrass record, which I think I
2:08
will at some point, but I got my start
2:10
singing bluegrass. Um when I was 11, I I
2:13
was in a bluegrass band. Um, a lot of
2:16
the bluegrass artists would tell you, I
2:18
used to go to bluegrass festivals when I
2:19
was a kid. They all know me that way.
2:21
Um, so it's always been a really big
2:22
part of my
2:25
love of music, but this was the right
2:27
moment to kind of show that part of me.
2:30
Um, I've obviously on award shows
2:32
collaborated with Ricky Skaggs and Sonia
2:34
Isaacs on the CMA special. I
2:36
collaborated with Ricky and Molly
2:38
Tuttle. And on this album, Molly
2:41
Tuttle's been a dear friend of mine over
2:42
the last few years. and she is a force
2:46
and one of the most incredible musicians
2:49
I've ever heard. And Dan Taminsky I my
2:53
>> some of my biggest memories as a kid
2:55
were going to see Allison Krauss in
2:56
Union Station perform and um he and I
3:00
connected. He's my favorite male voice
3:02
and we connected before I started making
3:03
this record and he was like I'd love to
3:05
figure out a way for us to collaborate
3:06
and I was like cool. I'm going to have
3:08
you sing on it, play on it, write with
3:10
me. Um, I'm going to use this is kind of
3:12
like the Carly Pearson, Dan Haminsky
3:14
record. Um, but yeah, just honoring that
3:16
side of me that's such a big part of me
3:18
that a lot of people don't realize.
3:20
>> Uh, let's talk about your collaborations
3:22
because you have two with Dan. You also
3:23
have um Riley Green. Who's that?
3:28
>> Your duet with him when you sang it live
3:31
at CMA Fest was next level amazing.
3:35
>> Thank you.
3:35
>> Um, your friendship with him. talk about
3:37
that a little bit.
3:39
>> I've known Riley for a long time. We
3:41
were label mates. Um, and he's always
3:44
been the quiet, kind, respectful person
3:48
that championed me. Um, was always I was
3:52
always a fan. Um, my parents live in
3:54
Alabama, so I think he's always just
3:57
been, you know, he asked me how my
3:59
family is and things like that. Um but
4:01
honestly something I want to say about
4:03
him is um
4:06
he in more ways than people see has
4:09
continued to pay it forward for me now
4:12
that he is sitting where he is. And um
4:15
that is that means a lot to me. Um and
4:19
yeah I I think he's obviously very
4:23
attractive but he's a great person that
4:26
has I feel like his talent is really
4:29
just remarkable. what he's been able to
4:31
do. Um, I went to see him in Nashville
4:33
and to see somebody with an acoustic
4:35
guitar sing a song they wrote by
4:37
themselves to an arena full of people
4:39
sold out singing every word. That's
4:41
really hard to do.
4:42
>> Yeah, he's pretty remarkable. Um, that
4:45
video you did. So, I watched the video
4:47
and I was like, "Girl, she must really
4:48
like Jordan."
4:50
>> I LITERALLY thought that you said you
4:52
were laughing in the video. That is not
4:54
a funny video. If y'all haven't seen it,
4:56
that video shoot, talk about that. Yeah.
4:58
I mean, obviously Riley and I know each
5:00
other, but we don't do that, you know,
5:02
with each other. Um, and in the first 30
5:05
minutes, the scene where we're singing
5:07
this close together was how we started
5:09
it. And I think we've both said
5:11
separately and together that we wanted
5:13
to die in the first 30 minutes because
5:15
it was so awkward. But somewhere in
5:18
there, we both went for it. And then I'm
5:21
like throwing my leg up on him. I mean,
5:23
it's acting. And that's the thing, like
5:25
as artists, you want to push the
5:27
boundaries and you want to tell stories.
5:30
And for me, I loved music videos in the
5:32
90s. And I think there's like a lost art
5:34
to um the artists living out the songs
5:39
in the music videos. And so it was my
5:43
idea cuz why wouldn't I want to do that?
5:44
You know what I mean? Um and I knew if
5:47
he would go there with me, it would be
5:48
something that we haven't seen in a long
5:50
time. Well, he did do the worst way
5:52
video, so I mean, you knew that.
5:53
>> But not with another artist.
5:54
>> That is true. So,
5:55
>> you know what I mean?
5:55
>> When Jordan saw it.
5:57
>> Yeah,
5:58
>> that was okay.
5:59
>> No.
6:01
>> No, it wasn't. But you know what? We're
6:02
still here.
6:03
>> We're still here and we're still happy.
6:05
Moving on.
6:07
>> What guy would be okay with that? You
6:08
know,
6:09
>> I was like,
6:10
>> yeah, it was it was tough there for a
6:12
second, but he's fine. He's he's he's
6:14
great now.
6:14
>> He's a good guy.
6:15
>> Yeah.
6:16
>> This is literally what I wrote down on
6:17
my notes. Settledness.
6:19
>> Oh, I like that. There is a the first
6:21
time I spoke to you was before your
6:23
debut single came out.
6:25
>> Um I had been set up. You had done like
6:26
this press day or something.
6:28
>> So we've talked a lot. There is a
6:30
settledness in you now that I have not
6:33
seen in you before.
6:34
>> Oh,
6:36
that's really nice. I feel like I have
6:39
one. Now by no means am I on any given
6:42
day like not, you know, struggling with
6:46
this thing or this thing, but I think I
6:48
just really know who I am.
6:50
And um that feels really good. I think I
6:56
feel happy. Um and I mean this so
7:01
kindly, but I have things to live for
7:03
outside of this and um I haven't in the
7:06
past and that's really nice. It makes me
7:09
a better artist to have a life separate
7:12
from Carly Pierce.
7:15
>> Oh, I love that. You are also such a
7:18
champion for helping other artists.
7:19
You're bringing a new artist out with
7:21
you on tour. Why is that so important to
7:24
you? Because I
7:27
I always talk about her. Kelsey,
7:31
when I
7:33
literally, it was like her first single.
7:36
She met me in a girl's support group. I
7:39
was mad at her because she had a record
7:40
deal and she was younger than me. Um,
7:44
we bonded in those moments. She took me
7:46
out on the road when I would pull up in
7:49
a 12 passenger van with my U-Haul
7:52
attached. Um, she let me sleep on her
7:54
bus. She gave me a lot of opportunities.
7:58
Lucy Hail is another artist who
8:00
obviously was a big actress, but um, had
8:03
a country career for a second and gave
8:06
me opportunities that she didn't need
8:07
to. Um, she didn't have to do that. And
8:10
I
8:12
want to be that. Sitting in this seat,
8:14
if I'm honest, this business, it can
8:17
make you feel great one day and horrible
8:19
the next. Something that I can control
8:22
is how I treat other people. Um, Hillary
8:25
Scott is another person. I just had
8:26
dinner with her two nights ago and we
8:28
were chatting about those are the things
8:31
that really matter. Um, so I have such a
8:33
heart for
8:36
especially the young women that are
8:37
coming up behind me and want to be a a
8:40
voice for them and a sounding board and
8:42
um a friend or a big sister.
8:45
>> Also, can we just say that Hillary Scott
8:47
might be one of the best humans that
8:48
ever exist?
8:49
>> No, I think she might I think she is
8:50
>> like
8:51
>> she's like anointed.
8:52
>> Yeah. Like her crown's going to be
8:53
bigger in heaven.
8:54
>> Definitely about bigger than mine.
8:57
>> You are such a force when you perform.
8:59
I've never asked you this before. Do you
9:01
ever get nervous?
9:03
>> Um,
9:04
yes.
9:06
I get nervous at odd things though. I
9:09
get more nervous
9:11
in a small room.
9:13
>> Um, I get nervous,
9:18
you know, if I'm singing on television.
9:22
That's a little more nerve-wracking. You
9:24
just, you have an idea of something in
9:25
your head and you want it to be great.
9:27
Um, but I think it's more like good
9:29
nerves. than like you know overtaking
9:32
me.
9:33
>> Okay. You have a really incredible band
9:35
too.
9:35
>> Aren't they so good?
9:36
>> They're phenomenal. And they've been
9:38
like with you since the beginning,
9:39
right?
9:39
>> I'm pretty biased. I think there I'd put
9:40
them up against anybody and there's only
9:42
four of them.
9:44
>> Yeah. I
9:45
>> don't give them a big head cuz we all
9:47
live together.
9:48
>> You still ride the bus with them, right?
9:50
There is not a separate art. There's not
9:51
a separate artist bus.
9:52
>> We have a crew bus and then we have our
9:54
bus. And I'm sure that they would
9:56
probably like it if I didn't ride on the
9:59
bus with them.
10:00
But I have zero interest in having my
10:02
own bus. I do not want that isolation.
10:05
It is already an isolated life. Those
10:07
are my brothers. We text. I mean, we
10:09
were texting this morning. We talk 24/7
10:10
when we're out off the road. They are my
10:13
best friends. Um I wouldn't be able to
10:17
do it without him.
10:19
>> Does it feel weird that you're their
10:20
boss?
10:21
>> Yes. Okay.
10:21
>> Well, yeah. I mean that's a whole
10:24
different dynamic where the people that
10:25
you spend your the most time with you
10:27
obviously get close but then you also
10:30
employ them right
10:31
>> you know it's not normal but you know
10:33
they
10:34
>> they're really they're good about
10:35
separating it until they want to talk
10:37
about bonuses
10:41
>> I hope they watch this they probably
10:43
will um I thought about this when I was
10:46
getting ready I have an 11-year-old
10:48
daughter
10:49
>> your image you have kept such a clean
10:51
image I don't know if that was
10:53
intentional or not, but you are such a
10:55
shining light for the young woman and as
10:56
a mother, I really appreciate that.
10:58
>> Oh my gosh, that's
11:01
that's very nice. Um
11:06
I think it's funny. I I would think at
11:10
times not just the pieces of my story
11:14
that have not been as um squeaky clean.
11:17
But yeah, I mean I I was raised by
11:20
really good women
11:21
>> who
11:23
I'm never going to do something for
11:26
attention.
11:28
I might sing for attention. I'm not
11:30
going to compromise my class for
11:34
anything.
11:35
>> That's my girl.
11:35
>> Um
11:37
and whether that costs me something
11:39
else, so be it. Um that's really
11:41
important to me. And I do want to be
11:44
somebody that
11:47
moms and grandmas and women can feel
11:50
good about their daughters or young
11:53
people listening to. I take that very
11:55
seriously.
11:55
>> Well, I'm a mom and I do.
11:57
>> All right, I got to let you go. Album
11:59
coming out. Tour.
12:00
>> Yes.
12:01
>> Lots of tour dates. Yes.
12:02
>> Anything else we need to talk about?
12:04
>> No. I think just finally being able to
12:07
start to talk about this and not tease
12:08
it feels very good. And I really do mean
12:11
it. I I know it. I'm not even gonna say
12:13
I think. I know it's my best music yet.
12:16
>> And it's on a new label.
12:17
>> It is. I'm very excited.
12:18
>> So exciting.
12:19
>> Yeah. New new season.
12:20
>> I'm here for it. Carly Pierce.
