Find Your Perfect Coffee Ratio: A Brewing Journey
Apr 1, 2026
It Smells Better Than It Tastes — a quiet coffee newsletter where I share what I'm learning about coffee, curiosity, and daily rituals. This channel is an extension of that space: https://www.itsmellsbetterthanittaste.com/
One of the most important things we overlook in coffee brewing is finding our ideal ratio—our personal strength level. After years of brewing at 1:10 (super strong) to accommodate different preferences, I've discovered that different roast levels shine at different ratios. Dark roasts open up beautifully at 1:16-1:17, revealing hidden sweetness and balance. Medium roasts hit their sweet spot around 1:15. Light roasts? I go either stronger at 1:13-1:14, or push them to 1:17-1:18 with higher extraction to unlock that fruity complexity.
The real journey isn't about following someone else's recipe—it's about experimenting until you find what makes YOUR palate happy. Start with 1:15 as your baseline, then go extreme: try 1:10 for intensity, 1:17 for openness. Once you discover your sweet spot for each roast level, everything else falls into place. Your coffee ritual becomes intentional, repeatable, and most importantly, enjoyable.
What's your go-to ratio? Do you adjust for different roast levels, or stick with one ratio for everything? Does water temperature change your approach? Share your brewing experiments below—I'd love to hear what's working (or not working) in your cup.
