one hello there Al podcast listeners in
0:02
this tutorial we have got a very special
0:05
guest called Jess from
0:08
Indonesia and she's going to tell us
0:10
about her amazing journey how she got
0:13
exceptionally high scores and her plans
0:18
now that she has done with IELTS and
0:21
moving forward so welcome to the
0:23
tutorial uh Jess how are we doing today
0:26
and could you just tell us a bit about
0:28
yourself and why you were taking the is
0:30
please of course so my name is Jess I'm
0:34
from Indonesia and I'm taking the ISS
0:37
because I need a high score to qualify
0:40
for a scholarship to study abroad it has
0:42
been a dream of mine to continue my
0:44
education
0:45
overes and to make that happen I had to
0:48
meet the language requirements set by
0:51
the scholarship program well so far I
0:54
would say uh I struggle a lot with
0:57
writing and speaking Yeah it has yeah
1:01
they have been the trickiest parts for
1:03
me I guess and I just knew that I focus
1:07
on improving those areas yeah yeah yeah
1:11
Jess you're not alone there I think most
1:12
of the students struggle with the
1:14
writing and speaking and I think the
1:18
main reason is because with the
1:19
listening and reading it's usually a
1:21
question of doing mock tests and you can
1:23
work on that
1:25
relentlessly um on your own but up until
1:29
recently it was hard to work
1:31
relentlessly on the writing and the
1:32
speaking on your own which I'll speak to
1:35
more about that point I'll speak more
1:37
about that point in a minute the Jess H
1:40
where was your scholarship where did you
1:42
want to go
1:43
to well I I wanted to study in Australia
1:48
Australia wow what do you to Australia
1:51
why
1:53
Australia well the main reason because I
1:56
just love Australia
2:01
yeah Karo
2:05
Me Kangaroo
2:07
meet
2:09
yeah
2:11
really okay yeah but Australia is a
2:14
beautiful country I can totally
2:16
understand why you were attracted to go
2:19
there okay so you said you were having
2:21
issues with the writing and the speaking
2:25
and um yeah what were the what kind of
2:28
issues were you facing with the right
2:31
oh well I think because I was practicing
2:34
alone so I couldn't really get that like
2:38
the real feedback so I just couldn't
2:40
tell where I wrong you know and uh
2:45
practicing using those online
2:48
resources they're it's hard to find the
2:52
most reliable ones out there so I was a
2:55
little bit
2:56
confused yeah where what because there
3:00
are a lot of like trips tips and tricks
3:03
out there so yeah I think it was one of
3:07
the hardest things yeah what did you
3:11
feel with the tips and tricks did you
3:14
feel they were valuable or time
3:16
consuming or impractical or practical
3:19
what's your opinion about those tips and
3:21
uh tricks that you
3:23
found I think they were time consuming
3:27
because I had to spend a lot of time
3:29
reading all of them but then at the end
3:31
I was just very confused on
3:36
what you know like the direction where I
3:39
was going I was like yeah very confused
3:42
yeah just because there are a lot of
3:44
there yeah absolutely I find that
3:47
there's Lo loads of information out
3:50
there but I mean from personal
3:52
experience it's usually action rather
3:55
than the information that that makes the
3:57
that makes the difference would you
3:59
agree
4:00
yes so true uhuh so that was with the
4:04
writing was it a similar story with the
4:26
speaking okay sorry I'll just edit that
4:29
bit out because it froze but the last
4:31
question was um okay was it the same for
4:34
the speaking well for the speaking I
4:37
think I needed real feedback the most
4:40
and it was hard when you study alone and
4:45
um you don't have somebody to talk to or
4:48
you don't have a tutor or like somebody
4:50
that that can review your speaking it
4:53
was very confusing like I just didn't
4:57
know what I did wrong you know
5:01
yeah so I just kept of course I kept
5:03
like um speaking by myself you know
5:07
trying to get used to getting those is
5:10
questions which I can get easily online
5:14
it's just I didn't know uh how my
5:18
performance was gotcha gotcha okay so
5:22
you were struggling you didn't know if
5:24
the mistakes you were making you didn't
5:26
know how your performance was okay and
5:28
was it the same with the
5:30
writing yes PR
5:33
much yeah yeah it's like that lack of
5:36
feedback to move forward and improve is
5:39
that right yeah yeah gotcha gotcha and
5:44
you also scored really well for the
5:46
listening and for the reading could you
5:48
tell us a bit about your preparation for
5:50
those
5:51
areas well I mainly just practiced a lot
5:54
like every single day I would practice
5:57
uh reading and listening section
6:00
so that I could just get used to the
6:02
types of questions in iots I think that
6:05
that is the point of the I and reading
6:08
test I listening and reading test so I
6:11
just kept practicing so you were doing
6:14
just relentlessly doing practice tests
6:17
for reading and listening amazing what
6:21
results did you get for the speaking uh
6:24
for the listening and for the reading uh
6:27
I got eight for both reading and
6:29
listening and for writing and speaking I
6:32
got seven no no no no no no no no no no
6:34
tell us later
6:36
sorry no worries okay so you got seven
6:40
for the writing seven for the speaking
6:41
and eight for the reading and
6:44
listening okay sorry I wanted to tease
6:46
my audience and just draw that out later
6:49
but it's okay no worries no
6:52
problem so before you got those ex
6:55
exceptional results for
6:57
the um speak and for the writing what
7:01
were you doing because I know because we
7:04
were working and you were using our
7:06
online tools but what did you use before
7:08
that it was like tips and tricks and
7:11
information or anything
7:13
else well I I pretty much
7:16
relied on those uh online resources that
7:20
I could get because again I did not take
7:23
any course before whether online or
7:26
offline so I just like look up for some
7:29
information about iots on YouTube or
7:32
just Google it down and I just practiced
7:35
by
7:37
myself
7:39
yeah I see okay all right and then if I
7:44
understand correctly you were practicing
7:45
by yourself you couldn't really feel the
7:48
Improvement it was a bit of an
7:50
information Overlord and then you
7:52
started using the AI essay Checker and
7:55
the AI speaking uh feedback tool and
7:59
doing tests is that correct yes yeah
8:03
okay good and you were using the courses
8:06
as well from my's podcast.com is that
8:08
right yes yes gotcha gotcha Okay and
8:12
like what happened after you started
8:14
using the tools and the CES from Alp
8:16
podcast.com I think it was a game
8:20
changer
8:22
personally
8:23
super after a few sessions I think I
8:26
started to see a difference especially
8:29
in my reading and listening scores I
8:32
noticed that I could finish the reading
8:34
section faster and as for the listening
8:37
it went pretty smooth yeah yeah that's
8:41
amazing yeah and what about sorry carry
8:46
on yeah as for the writing I think I got
8:49
very detailed and specific feedback so
8:52
it helped me to fix my problems like
8:55
with my essay structure you know and
8:57
just the overall flow of my
9:01
essay yeah yeah oh that's super super
9:04
and then for the speaking how so did you
9:07
do lots of mock tests or did you just do
9:10
one a week and then focus on your errors
9:12
what what approach did you take when you
9:14
were using that uh speaking exam
9:17
simulator oh no I do the mock test like
9:20
every single day really I want I wanted
9:24
to get used to getting some random
9:26
questions because before I I I got
9:30
really nervous easily when I got some
9:33
pretty random questions uh or those
9:35
things that I've never experienced
9:37
before so I went to the Sim simulator
9:42
and in the simulator we can choose a lot
9:45
of topics right but I prefer to get
9:48
random questions so I choose that every
9:51
time I practice in the
9:53
simulator and I just got more
9:57
comfortable I guess talking about a wide
9:59
range of topics yes so it really boosted
10:02
my confidence during the test that's
10:04
super that's super wow so you got a
10:07
massive confidence boost and would you
10:10
say that that confidence boost came
10:12
because you're now um like supremely
10:16
prepared there wasn't a topic that could
10:18
get you uh sort of like off balance or
10:21
that you weren't prepared to speak about
10:23
is that right yes that's correct
10:27
beautiful beautiful all right then so
10:31
was there any moment when you started
10:33
doing the uh the tests or the the or
10:38
submitting your writing for feedback was
10:40
there any moment where you realized oh
10:42
this is actually working well for
10:45
me yeah so I got like a very detailed
10:49
feedback like I said like in terms of my
10:51
grammar my essay structure you know I
10:54
struggled a lot with my grammar there
10:56
were like minor mistakes that I kept
10:58
doing every single time so whenever I
11:02
practice uh using the simulator it's
11:05
like I got reminded of I shouldn't do
11:08
the same mistakes over and over again
11:10
and also as for like the uh my idea when
11:15
I write my essay so I finally got to
11:18
know how to structure my essay so it
11:21
could be more coherent like the I want
11:25
it so yeah that's
11:29
that's excellent Jess and just to drill
11:32
down with the speaking so you did a like
11:35
a mock exam and then you would pick out
11:38
or the simulator would pick out your
11:40
errors did you focus on one specific
11:43
error at a time or did you just say okay
11:46
I've got these three errors I'm going to
11:47
focus on all three for the next speaking
11:51
uh simulation exam that I do how did you
11:53
approach
11:55
this I I just focused like one by one I
11:58
couldn't like
11:59
I mean it's generally hard to keep up
12:02
with everything all at once so I try to
12:05
focus one by one and I think the
12:10
mistakes that I did a lot whenever I
12:12
practice is um
12:15
vocabulary like
12:18
really
12:19
yeah yes it's like I just suddenly
12:23
didn't know what to say so I couldn't
12:26
find the right vocabulary for the right
12:29
cont context so struggle a lot with that
12:32
so what I did was that first I prepared
12:36
like an answer I wrote it down on my
12:39
notes and then I try to read it and then
12:43
try to answer it not by reading it so I
12:46
just look at my notes and then I talk
12:50
amazing I tried to remember the
12:53
vocabulary that I just wrote down
12:55
especially the ones that I just
12:57
discovered okay and this was vocabulary
13:00
new vocabulary you discovered how did
13:02
you discover it from the
13:05
simulator oh well the simul the
13:08
simulator gave me questions right and it
13:11
just I just tried to what is it like
13:15
make a sentence that I would usually not
13:18
make and also the the vocabulary too I
13:22
try to look for The Uncommon vocabulary
13:25
that I usually did not use
13:29
I look on like uh translator yeah
13:36
interesting okay that's a useful that's
13:38
a useful tip so now you you took the
13:43
test and you got your band seven in the
13:46
writing which is amazing Well Done Band
13:49
seven in the speaking is that right yes
13:52
yeah and eights in the listening and the
13:55
reading that is amazing so um what would
14:00
you say to somebody who might be
14:02
thinking about joining um I podcast
14:05
program oh my goodness I think just
14:08
don't hesitate go for
14:11
it
14:13
because the chorus made a huge
14:15
difference for me especially the test
14:18
simulator it was incredibly useful and
14:22
you know the detailed feedback I
14:23
received on my writing and also my
14:25
speaking it really helped me improve in
14:29
areas I struggled before like I said and
14:32
I think you don't need a private tutor
14:34
because the course just gives you
14:35
everything you need from structure
14:40
practice yeah and it gave me the
14:43
confidence that I needed to
14:46
succeed the score that I needed so I'm
14:49
overall very thrilled and happy about my
14:52
results fantastic fantastic Well Done
14:56
You Well Done wow and are you excited
14:59
about
15:01

15:24
