What is the difference between moat and mote in English?

Imagine a medieval castle, surrounded by a deep trench filled with water. That's a moat. Now, picture a tiny speck of dust floating in a sunbeam. That's a mote. While they may sound similar, moat and mote are vastly different in meaning and usage.
