Welcome to our sanding a timber floor video
0:08
This is part one and it's about the drum sander. Unless you own this kit you're going to have to hire stuff
0:15
There's a link on this frame so if you click it it will take you to our higher section
0:21
Use a nail punch to hammer all existing nails. existing nails down below the level of the floor and check this throughout your sanding
0:35
We are sanding a timber floor for a friend and we've used our own hire service
0:42
D.R. I doctor hire to bring in a couple of machines and the one we're looking at here is the
0:48
actual floor sanding machine itself. Later on in the video and on a separate video you'll
0:55
see us using an edge sander. So the floor sander comes completely
0:58
the appropriate safety electrical equipment including an RCD, as does all of their higher equipment
1:09
The handle itself is adjustable, so you can pull the handle backwards and forwards, that's quite obvious when you get it
1:17
And of course it comes with a number of dust bags you only pay for what you use But do remember especially with the floor sander that there a maximum level on the dust bag
1:28
If you go beyond that, it stops sucking it in and it actually acts opposite and it starts blowing the dust out
1:34
And they're dusty enough as they are. Talking about dust, when you hire anything like this, you get the appropriate safety equipment gloves and masks
1:45
I'm not going to put that on. I'm only going to be demonstrating briefly before somebody takes over from me
1:50
But you get all of that. And you also get the appropriate sanding sheets
1:56
which in this case we have a 24 grit, which is a very coarse paper, a 60 grit and 120 grid
2:09
Now, because this floor's been done before and it's already very smooth
2:13
we just need to take the old lacquer off before we varnish it again, We're just going to use the 120 grit
2:18
As you'll hear from the edge sounding video, the larger the number, the more pieces of grit
2:28
there are a square inch or square centimetre on the paper. So that's what that means
2:34
So to change the... ...the... change the paper on here To change the paper on here
3:10
You'll know when that retaining bar is fully tightened in because if the camera
3:21
zooms in again you can see that the bar now is below the level of the drum roller
3:30
So the drum, the returning bar doesn't hit the floor, only the sound paper does
3:35
When you're using the floor sounding machine, it's really important to the floor
3:40
that it's moving all of the time. Just by leaving the roller in the same place
3:48
for a couple of seconds, we have a groove in the floor that's at least two millimeters deep
3:56
And that was just with the smooth sandpaper the 120 grip And the last thing that you need to remember with a floor sander is that let get that out of the way that you should go with the grain all of the time the on the off switch on this sander and a number of other times has got a delay
4:22
now this only needs a light sand so I'm just going to use as I started off in just now on the first speed
4:29
and I'm going to lift the roller and press the delay switch
4:34
Now I'm going to go into the same in the floor
4:44
So there we go, that's just a couple of seconds on the floor with the light paper
4:51
and we can see already that we're taking the old varnish off which is all we want to do
4:59
Now's the time to go to part two of our video on sanding a timber floor using an edge sander
