Quarter sawing technique exist on a spectrum of yield vs waste. The more boards you saw that have their growth rings perfectly perpendicular to the face, the lower the yield will be from the log. On the other end, you could saw for the most amount of useable material but you'd end up with only a few boards that have perfect quarter sawn grain orientation.
