hi it's Lindsay Diane from dianecor.com
0:05
in this video we're going to talk all
0:06
about how to decorate in the coastal
0:08
style decorating in the coastal style
0:11
can be tricky sometimes because we often
0:14
associate it with nautical decor those
0:17
rope knots and boat anchors and things
0:21
like that and that kit style can be a
0:24
little bit too themed at times but if
0:27
you like that relaxed cozy refreshing
0:31
coastal style I'm going to share with
0:33
you a few tips on how to achieve that
0:36
without going too nautical let's get
0:38
started let's start by talking about the
0:40
difference between the nautical style
0:43
and the coastal style the nautical style
0:46
is much more of a themed style this is
0:49
something that you're going to see in a
0:51
sort of themed beach house setting so if
0:55
you're on VBO or Airbnb and you are
0:59
looking for a vacation destination by
1:01
the beach odds are you're going to find
1:03
a lot of homes that are decorated in
1:05
this nautical style it's very themed
1:08
it's heavy on um you know anchor decor
1:12
anchor patterns bold blue and white
1:15
stripes seashells uh you know beach
1:18
signage
1:20
uh boat ores things like that you're
1:22
going to see as large statement items
1:25
that are common in a nautical themed
1:28
room or home the coastal style on the
1:32
other hand is something that's a little
1:33
bit more subtle and sophisticated the
1:36
idea with the coastal style is that we
1:38
are mimicking basically life by the
1:41
shore the sand the sea the water the sky
1:45
you're going to bring in all of the
1:47
natural elements that you would find on
1:49
the coast you're going to bring in those
1:51
colors those materials and really mimic
1:54
the feeling of being on the coast on the
1:57
beach inside your home in a less themed
2:01
and kitschy way than the nautical decor
2:04
so let's talk about seven ways that you
2:06
can bring that nice calm relaxing
2:09
sophisticated coastal style into your
2:12
home first up is natural materials now
2:15
you do not have to go all out and
2:17
purchase a bunch of things or purchase
2:19
new furniture to add in some natural
2:22
materials into your space think about
2:25
really targeting in on your common areas
2:28
so that's going to be like your living
2:30
room your kitchen your dining room maybe
2:32
a bathroom and source some natural
2:35
elements from around your house odds are
2:37
you already have some going on so think
2:40
about things like woven baskets so
2:43
seaggrass baskets or raton accents you
2:47
may see something like a ratan framed
2:50
mirror or a ratan tray you can also look
2:54
for reclaimed wood pieces these can be
2:57
driftwood pieces or just otherwise sort
2:59
of weathered or reclaimed wood items so
3:03
trays um decorative bowls little
3:06
figurines things like that are really
3:08
great to bring into your space when
3:10
you're trying to achieve that coastal
3:12
style also consider layering in the wood
3:16
tones in your space so don't stick to
3:19
just one solid thing if you already have
3:21
some you know furniture whether it's
3:23
from Wayfair or from Amazon odds are
3:26
it's already in like a highly polished
3:28
wood finish right you might have it in a
3:30
walnut or a mahogany or a cherrywood or
3:34
something like that but then consider
3:36
adding in some more weathered or
3:38
distressed pieces that are of a lighter
3:42
tone something that's going to mimic a
3:45
piece of wood that may have floated up
3:47
on shore on the coast um so we don't
3:50
want anything that's too highly refined
3:52
or too highly polished adding in those
3:56
sort of rougher textures or subtler
3:58
finishes is a great way to add some
4:01
depth into your space when you're going
4:03
for that coastal style also think about
4:06
using um some ceramics or stone wear
4:10
that's in a more uh natural textured
4:13
finish jes bamboo ratan are all great
4:19
materials to look for in your decorative
4:21
accents to kind of sprinkle around your
4:23
space number two is textured fabrics so
4:28
instead of trying to get that coastal
4:30
look through prints and patterns like we
4:32
would with the nautical decor right
4:35
we're going to skip those sailboat
4:36
patterns and the uh you know the rope
4:39
knots and things like that and instead
4:42
go for materials that are light and
4:45
breezy and organic so think about
4:47
lightweight linens in soft cotton sheer
4:52
uh curtains um gauzy uh throw blankets
4:56
that will add a nice textural interest
4:59
into your space these are all textiles
5:02
that have a nice visible texture to them
5:06
and this is what we're going to use to
5:08
layer in a little bit more interest and
5:10
depth into your space instead of having
5:12
to rely heavily on nautical or coastal
5:15
patterns you'll also be able to do this
5:18
by adding you know throw blankets look
5:20
for like a loosely woven throw blanket
5:23
to throw over the arm of your sofa or
5:26
possibly a waffle knit blanket that you
5:29
can throw over the end of your bed when
5:31
it comes to pillow covers think about
5:33
something like linen or even burlap to
5:36
add in some nice coastal style textures
5:39
into your living space number three is
5:42
the coastal color palette now the best
5:45
coastal color palettes are soft and
5:48
natural so think about what you're going
5:51
to see if you're looking out your window
5:52
at the coast you're on the beach think
5:54
about the colors that you're seeing
5:56
there you're going to see some nice
5:59
bright white clouds and some misty blues
6:01
in the sky and the ocean you're going to
6:04
see beige for the sand and light browns
6:07
in the wood whether it's driftwood or
6:09
shells that are coming uh being washed
6:11
up onto the shore these are the soft
6:14
colors that you want to go for another
6:17
great color to splash in is like a
6:19
sealass green these are the colors that
6:23
are going to be best for the coastal
6:26
style ideally you want a light bright
6:30
backdrop so you want brighter walls but
6:34
by no means am I suggesting that you're
6:36
going to go out and paint the walls in
6:37
your home just to achieve this style
6:39
especially if you're going for it just
6:41
for the summer for your home and you
6:43
want to just switch up your decor and
6:44
you want to go a little bit coastal just
6:46
for the summer season we're not doing a
6:48
full renovation here right stick to the
6:50
decorative accents and let let that be
6:54
the vehicle by which you bring in this
6:56
coastal style alternatively you can also
6:59
go with some deeper colors if you like
7:03
or need a more high contrast look so you
7:06
could go with charcoal or you could go
7:08
with like a navy blue as well and this
7:11
will still put you right into that
7:14
coastal color palette and your home will
7:16
look nice bright fresh and airy next up
7:20
are florals florals are a great way to
7:23
bring those natural textures and colors
7:26
into your space whether it's greenery or
7:29
not now when it comes to the coastal
7:31
style you just want to make sure that
7:33
you don't go too tropical so by that I
7:36
mean we're not looking for like hibiscus
7:39
or birds of paradise no overly colorful
7:43
um florals are really appropriate for
7:45
the coastal style that's more of like a
7:47
tropical Miami style but instead you
7:50
want to go for something like maybe a
7:52
white or a pale blue hydrangeanger
7:55
eucalyptus stems are nice uh you could
7:58
even do like olive branches in a vase or
8:01
some other type of simple greenery dried
8:04
grasses are of course always a good
8:06
choice for the coastal style as well so
8:10
make sure that when you're choosing your
8:11
florals whether it's you know just a
8:14
little centerpiece on a console table or
8:16
on a dining room table stick within that
8:19
color palette and that will help direct
8:21
you towards the right florals stay away
8:23
from anything too bright and too
8:25
colorful and instead go for something a
8:27
little bit more pale or muted to go with
8:29
your coastal look number five is scents
8:33
now we all know that scents and
8:35
fragrances in the home really go a long
8:38
way to setting the mood and when it
8:40
comes to decorating in the coastal style
8:42
you don't want to just stop with what
8:43
you can see visually the real cherry on
8:46
the top is also going to be the smell in
8:49
your space and so when you're thinking
8:52
about what candles or essential oils to
8:54
choose think about some of these look
8:58
for candles or diffusers or linen sprays
9:00
that have sea salt coconut driftwood
9:04
citrus or a fresh linen scent also like
9:08
a eucalyptus and a mint is a great blend
9:11
if you want to you know put that in an
9:13
essential oil diffuser or you can find
9:15
you know candles that are eucalyptus and
9:17
mint as well this is a nice fresh clean
9:22
smell that you want through your house
9:24
if you're going with that coastal style
9:27
lavender is also another great option
9:30
number six is lighting lighting is key
9:33
with the coastal style you want to have
9:35
as much bright natural lighting coming
9:38
into your space as possible now ideally
9:42
to do this you want to minimize the
9:44
amount of window treatments that you
9:46
have going on so that you maximize the
9:48
amount of light coming through the
9:50
windows so if you can you want to let's
9:55
say forego the blinds and just do maybe
9:58
some sheer curtains or do shades instead
10:02
of blinds so that you can pull them all
10:04
the way up and you see the full
10:06
unobstructed window during the daytime
10:09
when you have those shades up and then
10:11
you can draw them at night but ideally
10:14
you know you want to minimize the amount
10:17
of window treatments that you have going
10:19
on now of course if you are just
10:23
mimicking the look of being on the coast
10:26
and you're not on the coast like most of
10:27
us probably aren't and you're in the
10:30
suburbs and you've got the neighbor's
10:31
fence right next to you you know blinds
10:34
are important for privacy and so instead
10:37
think about just having your blinds open
10:40
and just having the shears there instead
10:43
and then use the supplemental lighting
10:46
in your space to help brighten it up so
10:49
this is where your floor lamps and your
10:51
under cabinet lighting and your overhead
10:54
lighting are really going to come into
10:55
play they're going to help brighten up
10:57
that space and in the evening time think
11:00
about using a warmer toned bulb and that
11:03
will give you that nice warm sunsetty
11:06
kind of feeling in your space also
11:09
remember that with your artificial
11:10
lighting this is another opportunity for
11:12
you to infuse in things like ratan or
11:16
wicker so think about your lamp bases
11:19
those might be made out of raton and
11:22
then you have a nice bright white lamp
11:24
shade to go with it or you might have a
11:27
lamp base that's like a sealass green
11:30
that's really pretty and plays off of
11:33
the water and you could have that with a
11:36
nice bright lamp shade as well wood of
11:39
course is also another great option for
11:42
your lighting bases these are all great
11:45
natural elements that you're going to
11:47
find that go very well with the coastal
11:49
style number seven is beachy accents now
11:54
you can still use beachy themed accents
11:58
with the coastal style without going too
12:00
nautical the key here is to keep it
12:03
subtle and you also want to make sure
12:06
that your scale is not too big with the
12:09
items that you choose so choose one or
12:12
two little featured accents but make
12:15
sure that they aren't sort of oversized
12:17
statement pieces and by this I mean you
12:21
may not want a huge massive driftwood
12:24
sculpture in the middle of your coffee
12:26
table or massive uh seashell bowl filled
12:30
with rocks and sand and things like that
12:33
choose something that's a little bit
12:35
more subtle and understated to put on
12:38
some of your horizontal surfaces so it
12:40
may be that you have a little small
12:43
driftwood bowl that is on your console
12:46
table or maybe you have a little uh
12:48
decorative vase that may be filled with
12:50
little mini seashells but you only have
12:52
one of them right you don't have
12:54
seashells in a variety of collections
12:56
all over your room or all over your home
12:58
you would sort of do it once and leave
13:00
it at that and then for sure stay away
13:02
from any super oversized beachy accents
13:06
like we talked about earlier the you
13:08
know the beach signage or you know boat
13:12
ores or giant uh you know anchor wall
13:15
decor pieces those are a little bit too
13:18
big and they scream sort of nautical and
13:21
themed instead you want to stay on the
13:23
more subtle side so look for smaller
13:25
accents look for um you know one or two
13:28
pieces to kind of sprinkle here and
13:30
there without going too heavily themed
13:34
with your decorative accessories some
13:37
things to try when you're looking for
13:39
beachy accents would be like a wooden
13:42
bowl with some small seashells in it or
13:45
a bowl of coral a framed print of a
13:48
coastal landscape is always a great
13:50
option or a abstract painting with
13:54
watercolors that are in that coastal
13:58
color palette so the blues the beige the
14:02
white any kind of watercolor in that
14:05
color scheme would be great a reclaimed
14:07
driftwood sculpture is a nice option for
14:12
your tabletop decor and then of course
14:14
ocean photography is always a good pick
14:17
as well as woven wall hangings so that's
14:21
it for this video i hope you found it
