2:14
may already know this show focuses on growth mindset we discuss different topics we are not
2:21
married to one topic or other each week is a different topic we you know take a lot of questions
2:28
from audience so feel free to post your comment questions questions can be anything anything
2:33
related to the topic we are talking or without the topic we're talking it can be anything
2:39
all right so let's get started um everybody just say hi join us just feel free to say hi
2:45
so i know who's joining us today um and then uh deepak is already here vasker looks like
2:54
uh ton of people already joined uh and uh welcome vaskar deepak welcome to the show again you guys
3:03
our visitors regular visitors thanks for hanging out with me on this uh friday
3:09
noon here in the u.s and i'm sure it's evening at your place first thing first um i did get my
3:18
second kobe shot on wednesday and yesterday i had a little bit fever but nothing major mild fever
3:27
so i'm a little bit slow today but that's a normal side effect so i'm fully vaccinated now
3:34
in the u.s things are getting better you may have probably already heard that
3:40
in u.s now if you are fully vaccinated you all don't even need to wear a mask outside and maybe
3:45
not inside indoors okay outdoor indoor now mask is not required if you are fully vaccinated uh
3:53
US has also opened up vaccination for 12 years and older now
3:58
So they're slowly going to the younger people now. I know a lot of people, you know, you guys joining us, girls joining us from India
4:08
India is still, you know, things are still not good, but looks like they're improving
4:14
I talked to a couple of people, my family, friends in villages
4:20
They're saying things are kind of not that bad. I also talked to guys in Noida, they're saying now there's oxygen is available
4:29
Vaccine is still not available, I know, and I'm not sure why, but I think U.S. should be doing a lot more
4:37
Maybe they are waiting, they want to get the U.S. under control. Maybe that's the plan, but I think personally, if you ask me, U.S. should be sending a lot more vaccine to India
4:49
They should be producing more. Hopefully, they are doing it. We just don't know
4:53
Welcome to the show. Pradeep, welcome to the show. We are hanging out today. Today also I'm going to cut short. This show is going to be only 45 minutes. It's usually one hour from 12 to 1. The reason is I'm traveling. I'm traveling to Boston. It's a six hours drive for me. So I need to plan to leave at one. So we're going to cut a little bit short. So if you have any questions, just jump in before
5:23
So, yeah, so today I think we are going to talk about some resumes, career advice, any
5:30
questions you have about the COVID, you can update us on the situation, COVID situation
5:35
in your area, how things are going, anything you people are doing right or wrong or what
5:41
they should be doing, feel free to post any kind of comments here. We want to open this discussion for, you know, general topics
5:48
If you found some cases where people are doing a great job or not so good job
5:56
people do posts here as well. And then we are also going to talk about a new AMA coming out on 25th of this month
6:09
which is in two weeks. We are gonna have AMA show live here on this on Tuesday noon in couple of weeks on 25th
6:22
of May with Chris True. Chris is CEO and Founder of Stratus
6:28
If you don't know what Stratus is, I'm sure if you are a C Sharp Corner member, you probably
6:32
know Stratus already. platform is a blockchain product for c-sharp and dot net this is going to be very exciting we are
6:41
going to talk about the blockchain how to get started with blockchain cryptocurrencies and
6:47
stratus has its own cryptocurrency called strax we are also going to give away 500 strax
6:57
i don't know i'm going to talk to krushang about this maybe 500 maybe thousand but definitely
7:02
500 500 tracks is a pretty good money i think each stretch is strax is worth three dollars something
7:09
so it's 150 plus dollars giveaways uh so we're gonna give that giveaway as well during that live
7:19
show we will ask some questions related to stratus or blockchain or c corner and then five people will win 100 strikes each So that exciting If you are somebody who already in blockchain or in cryptocurrency already know about the stratus
7:38
view that's probably good chance for you to come and win some free stack tracks
7:44
So yeah that's kind of uh news we have today. Let's go dig deep into this and today's focus is uh
7:52
how to write a killer resume as you may and the idea came from the last show
7:57
where somebody asked a question like how come my resume doesn't get selected
8:03
you know I never get a call up for an interview and you want to talk about
8:07
more and I want you to get involved you if you get a lot of calls or you never
8:12
get a call or you have a feedback just jump in just share it's like a we are
8:17
having an open discussion okay it's not a one-way street just put your questions
8:21
here. If you are not getting any calls or you are getting calls or you have any questions about the
8:29
stress. I mean okay people are calling me the wrong time. If you have any questions about
8:35
resumes, you have questions about stratus, you have questions about you have any feedback or
8:41
anything to discuss about COVID situation in India just feel free to ask questions
8:46
And then one more thing before we start our resume thing is we are C sharp corner is a
8:57
community right and when we are a community we always think about how we all together can
9:04
help in different situations so from time to time like this we are raising funds for
9:09
COVID all 100% funds raised will go to help people in India who are affected by COVID so
9:17
there is a donation link if you are in a position to donate it can be anything it can be $1 $2
9:23
whatever you can feel free to donate there I believe we have already raised close to $2,000
9:31
and I think more is coming in everything counts right we have some good good
9:38
people donated a ton of money somebody donated $100 $200 $250 so but if you are
9:47
not in a position to give away that much you can give anything right or you can
9:53
help in different ways we are raising money we will continue to raise money
9:57
It looks like Covid is going to be here for a long time
10:02
Even at our conferences, all the conferences we are doing in the rest of the year, most
10:06
of them, we are raising money for Covid or different charity. Actually, before even Covid, we were raising money for different charities, but we will
10:16
continue to do that. There's upcoming conferences coming up, Simon. Is there any conferences coming up this month, next month
10:25
also talk about those so if you guys yeah you can post post on the screen so
10:33
this month we have angular conference coming up so if you are you are angular
10:38
developer or you want to learn angular this angular conference coming up next
10:44
month we have a react conference coming up so and then we have other conferences
10:50
coming up but there's a bigger conference is coming up this you know second half of the year where we are going to do large large conferences on
10:58
dotnet as your in other other bigger topics where we have more audience so
11:07
check that out check out the conferences website check out the events website oh
11:11
yeah and we are always looking for new guys new girls speakers feel free to
11:18
just ask us questions join us follow or contact somebody on social media if you
11:25
are one of the aspiring or you know one of the speakers who want to speak at
11:31
these different conferences feel free to reach out to any of them everything is public it's available so check it out alright let's take a pause and let's
11:42
talk about resumes how many of you have sent your resumes and did not get any
11:50
call feel free to reply say yes no how many times you submit a resume to how
11:58
many companies and you do not get a call so feel free to post some comments
12:04
right or in the region I'm going to tell you really I want to explain you how the
12:12
resume selection works how some HR departments works how how basically you
12:19
are selected to even get a call forget about the job to even get a call okay so
12:26
and what you should keep in mind when you are building this resume okay and if
12:35
you think you have a great resume and you every time you submit it and you get
12:41
ton of calls then also do that share let us know let us know where you are with this topic
12:48
um so first thing first right jobs calls interviews a lot of it is supply and demand
13:00
okay supply and demand means depending on the need if there's a big need in a company for
13:09
I don't know let's say C-sharp developers and if you are a Java developer you apply in that company
13:18
you are not going to get the call it's that simple right so that's one reason that you
13:24
do not have the skill set which company is looking for that's number one number two if you are you
13:35
have this skill set which not too many people have it means let's say let's take
13:41
an example if you are an Azure architect and who has worked on
13:45
exclusively on I don't know Active Directory and there are five companies
13:52
looking for that and you apply there you're gonna get call right away because
13:56
they need you okay you need them as much as you need them they also need you the
14:04
The best part of being a software developer in today's world is that there is a big demand
14:13
of software developers as long as you know what you're doing, as long as you are up to
14:18
date, as long as you have the skill set that is required
14:24
Does that make sense? Deepak said he has sent a lot of resumes 8 to 10 times but he does not get calls
14:32
is how it is right so as i said first of all is when you're applying are you applying for anything
14:40
or you applying for the job and you have the skill set that matching the job okay one other
14:50
thing i want to add here is a lot of people i seen that some developers change their resume based on the job do not do that I talk about that in my last show on resume you should have what you are what you know what you have done
15:06
that's how it should be resume you should not lie on your resume that's just not a good thing
15:12
that is just not a good thing okay um and that's what we'll talk more about today how to create
15:19
that you know i would not show the resume i don't have sample i was supposed to prepare a
15:24
resume template which i i have somewhere but yesterday because you know i had a little bit
15:30
fever i couldn't get work done third thing is if you are sending your resume to a company
15:41
where they're getting ton of resumes already so for example if let's say big company is
15:47
hiring in Delhi, I don't know, take an example, HCL for example, or in New York, Philadelphia
15:54
let's say Comcast is hiring 100 software developers and they get 1000 resumes. It will be really
16:04
really hard, it's like one out of 10 to get one resume selected, right? But I'm going to tell you
16:11
one more secret that in India maybe yes but in the US the majority of hiring
16:21
happens based on your connections based on who you know even in India right we
16:30
always you know like I work with companies and they're hiring first thing
16:34
they will go is to the network they will ask their employees like hey we are
16:39
hiring a C-shop developer do you have any friend who's looking for job then the
16:46
first thing you start with and that's why majority of hiring happens to you and
16:50
good thing is that if you come through a reference there's not I don't know
17:01
depends on company to company depend on the person who's interviewing you chances
17:05
are the interview will not be that difficult as well all right so um building that network
17:16
building that connection um is very important in this industry the company i see this a lot of time
17:25
is that when you leave a company you don't leave a with a good relationship with your old manager
17:31
or your old company or your peers you know some do some don't and i did mistake in the past i
17:39
you know i didn't keep a good relationship my previous companies and that's the last thing i
17:45
think worst thing we do keep in mind regardless of you leave company finding your job you should
17:51
still continue to have that good relationship with your existing company because they know somebody
17:58
they know somebody and that's how it is right we hire all the time people who left us in the past
18:04
we reach out to again hey are you still looking for a job we have another opening and people come
18:08
back it happens all the time so one thing one advice i will give everybody here is that
18:17
do not burn bridges okay and i have written an article on c-sharp corner too that do not burn
18:24
bridges if one advice i have to give you you may disagree with your manager or your
18:31
co-worker or your pair or somebody's working for you but it doesn't mean that you need to
18:38
spoil your relationship you still need to be friend with them be professional with them
18:43
at least continue to be professional with them have you know definitely link with them on
18:48
linkedin or wherever you link connect right um that's very important a lot of hiring happens
18:55
from who you know and sometimes you know i hire people like because i know them okay come join i
19:02
know this person may not have the technical skill but i know this person i can trust i know this
19:10
person can work hard i know this person i can you know give him some work or her some work and they
19:16
they will get it done so that's kind of it's a big big big it's a big big plus
19:25
when you are in this industry welcome ledger back to welcome back to the show
19:32
good to see you back here hopefully you're enjoying the show today everybody
19:36
welcome to the show today we are just talking about resumes getting selected
19:41
finding your next job one of the first advice I have to give you is that forget resume do not burn
19:52
your bridges with your existing company keep a professional relationship even a good close friend
19:58
to it when you leave make sure you thank everybody when you leave a company I know in the past people
20:06
leave they just go behind the back and they leave and say i'm leaving and they put a company in a
20:13
bad situation let's say project is going on and you don't give a enough notice and you leave
20:21
because you found a better job which is nothing wrong with it you know you definitely can leave
20:25
but then because you didn't communicate with your manager in you know ahead of time
20:34
you put them in a bad situation project going to suffer means client is not going to help you or
20:40
somebody's going to suffer somewhere so that's kind of no being not professional so if you have
20:47
to leave a company you've got to be professional let your company know that hey i found a better
20:53
job and i think it's a good fit for me i'm going to leave but let me help you what i can do before
20:59
ID so you have to really be able to work more when you are ready to leave than less and you
21:06
will say okay why do I care I'm already leaving I don't care well that's up to you but this is how
21:14
you build a good relationship and these relationships matter in this industry more than anything else
21:20
Okay. Yes, so I will have a template. As I said, I have a template we created on C Sharp Corner
21:31
which I will share in next week. I was supposed to work on yesterday, but I had a fever, a little
21:37
bit fever. I did not get to work. But yes, we will share a template resume here. Actually
21:43
Simon, if you want to, can you open resume.com slash resume? There's a resume
21:50
Builder on C-sharp corner so where you can create a resume there live
21:59
And it has three templates it has template for Somebody who's starting one year experience somebody who is like three to five year experience or somebody who is
22:09
Architect level or senior guys. So yeah, so we are Going to launch this is there. It's like a private beta right now, but you can see there's templates there. Yes
22:20
And you can fill out your information and it will create a resume for you So back to let get back to the when you are you know leaving your job the important part if I had to give one advice to everybody there is do not burn
22:42
bridges with your professional peers friends professional anybody in the company wherever you go work when you leave just nicely figure out the right
22:54
way to talk to them and explain them and I think this is like I think this new
22:59
job is really good for me because of these reasons and let me know the most
23:04
important part for you before you leave is ask them let me know I have one month
23:09
or two weeks or two months how can I help you make sure that the transition
23:14
is good and no work is nothing is affected once you do that you will have
23:19
a very very plus very plus point on your side with that existing company so
23:28
that's my biggest advice if I have to give you obviously now number two your
23:34
resume when you're building this resume it has to be good resume okay and when
23:41
I said good resume we talked a little bit last week is that I see some resume
23:45
I got some resume recently where I have to I have no idea how many years of
23:50
experience this person has okay so obviously your name your contact information your title current title how many years of experience you have in
24:03
what kind of job you're looking for that should be right there at the top okay
24:10
that gives you that's that's very important part right there so I don't
24:15
have to look around okay this person has five years six years let me go when did he start this
24:19
career right so that's one thing you do is you have to have your your name obviously everybody
24:26
has name nothing wrong contact number everybody has that current title some people do some don't
24:32
but make sure your current title but then you should also have you should start saying that
24:38
five years of experience and you know being as a software developer in this this fine then
24:44
And below that, you should have a skills listing what you are experiencing
24:50
Keep in mind, put your latest skill at the top, which you think you are really best at it
24:58
That's how it should be. And if you have five projects in your resume and one project you think you did a good job
25:08
make sure that's highlighted. or let's say in one project you led a team and you were a part of architecture and you did the
25:17
design make sure that's highlighted and if there's something in one project you did do you think
25:25
you're proud of you want to figure out you want to somehow explain that and try to show that this
25:33
is something i'm proud of it it's okay to do that it's it's i want to know what kind of work you did
25:39
you are proud of it okay that's kind of I wanna look in the resume if you have so you so you got
25:48
this you know you got the template you can go look at templates here you got the projects you can also
25:56
put your extra you know don't don't put your projects you let's say if you have five plus
26:04
years experience I don't think putting projects you did in school really
26:08
matters unless they were something amazing unless you did something innovative there that's great but more focus should be on your latest resumes obviously if
26:20
you are a young starting a student you won't have much so you want to put
26:23
everything there but if you're an experienced person don't make a 10 page
26:30
resume okay it should be three pages if you ask me nobody has time to go through 10 pages
26:36
and nobody really goes through 10 pages to me ideal is the three pages perfect two pages good
26:43
and just highlighted your latest projects and details everything else can be everything else
26:51
can be you know briefly um if in one of the projects let's say you really want to you know
27:02
say this is something i led you manage team you want to highlight your roles and responsibilities
27:11
very clearly sometimes i have to ask okay people go and write the resumes and there's like oh i
27:17
work on this product this product does this this this so for example i build a website c sharp
27:22
corner c sharp corner has forums it has you know um input output it's reading regimen people can
27:29
publish articles that's great but i want to know what you did in that project what was your roles
27:39
and responsibilities in that project did you architect were you involved in architecture
27:45
Did you do any design and did you do any documentation? Did you create any documentation on those design documentation
27:53
Were you involved in, of course you were involved in writing code if you're a programmer
27:59
Were you involved in writing code in the UI or in the API or in the back end
28:04
What kind of code were you involved in writing? That should be clear
28:09
Were you also involved in testing and deployment in products and releases
28:14
It should be clear there and at least in your first two or three projects because when I'm
28:22
looking at that resume, now I can, when I listen, I'm selecting resumes and if some, one resume
28:30
says, okay, this person was involved in design, he wrote code, he was also involved in testing
28:35
oh, wow, he did DevOps and deployment. So, out of sudden, I know that in this project, this person has gone through the entire lifecycle of software from architecture or even before that to the deploying on production
28:52
So, roles and responsibilities. There should be, in each project, there should be a line
28:59
It doesn't have to be a half page, okay? It doesn't have to be a big half page line
29:05
All you should say is one or two lines, say roles and responsibilities
29:11
Say I led four people team, created design documents, coding, build back-end API, did
29:21
you know installation docker deployed whatever you do so that should be clear
29:28
so it also helps interview if you are getting selected for the interview
29:34
that's what they will ask they will not if you don't say on your resume that you
29:39
did not involve in deployment chances are they won't ask any questions they
29:43
will only ask questions was written there hopefully it makes sense guys keep
29:49
keep posting your comments if you agree, disagree. Again, we have 15 more minutes to go
29:56
Just go ahead, feel free to ask your questions. But if you are agreeing
29:59
just agreeing with these you know what I'm saying here and ask questions so I
30:04
know actually you know at least I'm making sense in your listening. Welcome
30:11
to the show Muhammad, welcome for joining us today this Friday here in
30:16
Philadelphia at noon we have 15 more minutes to go so we are today talking
30:21
about the resumes. So we covered quickly a few things here in the resume how to
30:26
write a killer resume, you should have clearly mentioned at the top how many years of experience
30:33
do you have, what your current role is and what kind of job you're looking for. You should also
30:40
have, don't have a resume of 10 page resume, you should have 3-4 page resumes, your recent projects
30:49
should be highlighted at the top, make sure you highlighted what technologies you have used on
30:56
those projects. The technology you are really good at, that should be at the top, that should be
31:01
highlighted maybe in the board. So, interviewee will ask you more on that. Each project should
31:07
also have clearly specified what kind of role responsibilities you had in that project
31:14
means what kind of work you have done in that project nice to see uh muhammad joining us from africa that's great you are a c-sharp developer angular
31:24
developer great let these keep comments comments keep coming uh today yeah so that's kind of gives
31:31
you a brief idea of what a killer regime may look like okay resume should also say um
31:38
Obviously, clearly, I see some people don't have phone numbers in time to contact
31:44
If you are full time, just make sure you put it there. Best time to call
31:49
Some don't. Emails are great. That's awesome. Make sure your email is the one you put is up to date
31:56
Some people put old emails and things go to spam. I've seen that. And I have to ask, like, did you get the email? No
32:03
Then go check spam and they find it. So anyway, so those are some of the tips
32:07
In coming week we're going to share templates of the killer resume
32:13
I'll have three templates for beginner or intermediate positions for senior guy
32:20
So I'll share those. It's my bad I didn't get time to actually work yesterday so I could share live
32:28
So I'll have that ready. So we have only 10 minutes left now
32:34
If you have any questions, feel free to let them come in. last thing I want to talk about is this AMA coming up on on 25th okay so any of you are you know these days blockchain is growing
32:51
blockchain is going to be a one of the emerging techs coming up and it's already there in
32:59
cryptocurrencies I'm sure if some of you have heard of cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and all that
33:04
they're all growing right so this space is opening up a lot if you know the new
33:10
C-sharp corner has partnered with the Stratus Stratus platform is a blockchain
33:16
excuse me the blockchain product for C-sharp and .NET developers so what does
33:21
that mean that means if you or your company wants to implement blockchain in
33:30
your C-sharp.net, ASP.net, those projects, you don't have to learn anything new. You can use
33:37
their APIs and integrate blockchain in literally very, you know, very easy. It's not hard to do
33:45
It's just a matter of learning how to use it. Okay. And then blockchain has its own
33:52
different usage, use cases, it has different products, you know like for
33:58
example when you think about web technologies, web has different uses, you
34:03
know same thing with blockchain. So on C-sharp corner we are launching new section
34:08
categories on blockchain, there's going to be a lot more learning on blockchain
34:12
So that's coming up, blockchain is going to be another big focus for us this
34:18
year going forward. If you are in cryptocurrencies we are going to give away StriX also. So Chris
34:32
True who is coming on our EMA on 25th is the CEO of StriX. So you can ask any questions you have
34:41
You can ask him bring your questions. Let's take one question. There was a question here on
34:47
solidity can you go back there simon yeah so join us on yeah it's possible blockchain i use solidity
34:55
so solidity is only for ethereum blockchain ethereum blockchain if you're planning to use
35:04
ethereum blockchain in your projects it's usually a public blockchain that's solidity it's a new
35:11
language but if you are a c-sharp and dotnet developer you're like yeah i don't feel like
35:16
learning a new solid language i only know c stratus is for you because you don need to learn anything you know you already know C sharp so for example Stratus has smart contracts ethereum and solid T are used to write a
35:33
smart contract you can write your own smart contract in C sharp other part of
35:39
Stratus is that the code is written C sharp it's also compiled native dotnet so
35:44
you can write dotnet code means dotnet 5 dotnet 6 when their upgrades come you'll
35:49
have advantage of latest features of dotnet in the performance. I'm sure you may have heard that
35:56
.net 5 and .net 6 are really much faster than anything out there or previous versions
36:04
So we are going to talk about these. We are also going to... there's an article coming out on C
36:11
t-shirt corner next week it's on how to get started with stress so we are going to share that
36:18
as well so if somebody wants to learn they can get started with that
36:23
um and i see there's a question from deepak that many times i saw cover letters mentored for many
36:30
companies yes and no yeah if companies asking for a cover letter then yes you should send that
36:38
But I don't think these days really cover letters are important. Cover letters used to be when you're faxing resumes so they can read cover letter before
36:49
they really spend time on resumes. These days everything is online. Everything is email
36:54
You're sending resumes in email. So I don't think cover letter is that important as long as the purpose of cover letter was what
37:03
Who you are? What's your current role? What kind of job you're looking for? do you want to join this company right that's the kind of but this should tell your resume should
37:11
tell you me already um as we you know said earlier what are the things you need to think about when
37:19
you're writing a resume um do you have a blog to learn um learn about what um yes if you're talking
37:29
about blockchain stratus yes so we are launching a new category called stratus blockchain on c
37:39
sharp corner we already have a two articles there right now so that's where you can learn blockchain
37:46
um using stratus and that's where we are publishing articles so simon you want to
37:51
quick share the screen it's in category Stratus yeah there you go so you can
37:58
go there and that's where you can find all the blogs slash articles or
38:03
tutorials on Stratus blockchain yeah and there more coming more coming in next week or two Every week there going to be more content on how to do different things with the Strahd blockchain And it
38:20
not that we are just writing these articles. We are actually going to be using this Strahdus
38:25
in some of our projects for our clients too. So there is also going to be jobs and projects
38:33
available in this too. So if you are a C-sharp.net person, you want to learn
38:39
something new in blockchain and looking to get some jobs, that's also a good
38:43
opportunity for you. So that's something to think about. With that, if you don't
38:51
have any other questions, I think that covers all my talks today. If you don't
38:57
have anything, we'll close it early today. Sorry about making it short because
39:02
because as I said, I have to run, I have to get ready and drive for six hours
39:09
But I will have the resume template more designed by next week or two
39:15
maybe next Friday, we will share the link before you can download the template
39:21
for resume template. And then we will be announcing more about this status on our social media
39:31
and what this AMA means, who is joining us, what are the rules for winning different prizes
39:40
we will also be announcing that. With that said, I hope everybody is staying safe
39:49
everybody is kind of getting better, hopefully the COVID situation goes away soon and then
39:55
in the meantime, just stay safe and see what you can do to help others if you are able to
40:01
I'll see you next Friday same time 12 noon Eastern everybody thank you so much
40:09
for joining and joining us and all those great questions that was awesome
40:14
I'll see you next week
