Welcome to another crochet tutorial with creations by Courtney for the modified raised diagonals
0:07
Get your hook and yarn. Let's get started. This is a stitch that I found in one of my books and I always have to change things up because that's just fun for me
0:20
So we're going to be working with bulky weight yarn and number five and a furrows L, which is the 7mm
0:29
And honestly, when I measure this, this is actually an 8. So that's okay because the L and most other yarn, I mean crochet hooks are typically an 8 millimeter
0:43
So we're going to get started by making our slip knot. And if you've been following me for a while and if not, your new to the channel, welcome

1:05
a multiple of four plus three. So I like to start with a foundation stitch. Yes, we can do a chain
1:15
but why do that? And if you do prefer to do a chain, just do a multiple of four. So, um
1:23
and if you do the chain, a multiple of four and then you'll single crochet in each stitch across
1:29
starting in the second one. So we're gonna do 19 foundation single crochets
1:40
So this is one. And again when making the foundation stitch, always wanna work under both loops of the chain
1:52
of the previous stitch. Yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through one
1:58
yarn over, pull through one, yarn over pull through two. So do that until you have 19 stitches. All right. So you should have
2:13
19 foundation stitches. So let's count. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen
2:28
16, 17, 18, 19. Wonderful. So this is going to be our right side row
2:37
And now we're just going to turn our work and do double crochet in each stitch
2:44
So I like to do a chainless starting double crochet, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert through the stitch
2:53
yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull through two
2:57
of a pull through two. If you don't know that stitch you can always just do a chain
3:03
three but double crochet and each stitch across. And row two is the beginning of the
3:19
repeat. Now this is a eight row repeat. And know so much but really once you get going it's really easy to follow in the
3:36
first row of post stitches are the trickiest and I modified them because I
3:45
don't like the gaps on the back now that we're at the end
3:53
we're going to turn our work okay so we have our first two rows the foundation single
4:09
crochet or if you started with the chain and then major single crochets and then one row of
4:16
double crochets all right so we've turned our work after completing the first two rows and we're going to do a starting a chain with starting double crochet
4:31
I'm just going to call it double crochet it's such a mouthful especially since I'm getting my
4:35
voice back and now we're going to double crochet in the next two stitches okay so we now have
4:45
three double crochet now we're going to make a front post extended treble so we're going to
4:53
yarn over twice and we're going to work around the third stitch two rows below
5:03
So you start your hook from front to back to front, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over
5:11
pull through one and this is what makes it extended and now yarn over pull through two yarn over pull through two And this is where I modified the stitch because it makes more sense when we have more rows
5:25
why this is going to be so tall. But we're going to yarn over and search your hook into the
5:31
stitch that is normally skipped when doing post stitches, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through
5:37
two. So this counts as a half double crochet and then yarn over and pull through three
5:43
So this is the modified stitch. So normally we would skip that but technically it's going to lean and it's going to be right
5:54
on top of that so it doesn't create a gap in the back
5:59
And now we're just going to make three double crochet or one double crochet in the next
6:05
three stitches. And now we're going to do another front post extended treble
6:13
So yarn over twice and we're going to continue to work two rows below
6:18
So we're going to skip three so that's one, two, three that we skip from the last one
6:23
and we're going to work around this stitch here. So go around that single crochet, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through one, yarn over
6:32
pull through two, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, and set your hook into the stitch
6:38
behind it, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull through three
6:43
And honestly, I think that's the trickiest part. Once you get this row set, it's really easy to follow where to put your post stitches
6:58
So we'll make three more double crochet like so. And now we'll make the next front post double crochet
7:11
Yarn over twice. Skip three stitches. So work around this one. Search your hook for front to back to front. Yarn over. Pull up a loop. Yarn over pull through one. Yarn over pull through two. Yarn over pull through two. Yarn over. Work in this stitch that's normally skipped. Pull up a loop. Yon over pull through two. Yon over pull through three
7:41
And now repeat double crochet in the next three stitches
7:54
Front post extended treble stitch. Remember you're skipping three to work around the next stitch, two rows below
8:06
Pull through one, pull through two, pull through two, make a half
8:11
double crochet, yarn over pull through three. And then we'll just double crochet in the last
8:18
three stitches. So, we've now completed row three. So set that down and again, it does
8:39
look straight. But I'm promise you it will start to lean as we do more rows
8:45
It really, really will. So it's a slight lean. Now in the original pattern it does lean more because there's shorter stitches in between
8:54
the rows with the front post and double crochet. So turn your work and work double crochets in each stitch and I'll see you back at the start
9:07
of row five. All right, so we've completed the next row of double crochet
9:30
And so again, that was the same as row two. And we've also done it for row four
9:38
So now we're going to turn our work and we're going to double crochet in the first four stitches
9:50
Okay, so we have our four
10:07
four double crochet excuse me now we're going to do our first front post extended
10:13
treble around the post two rows below so yarn over twice insert your hook
10:19
around the post so that's the top part not the half double crochet yarn
10:24
over pull up a loop yarn over pull through one yarn over pull through two
10:29
yarn over pulled through two make your half double crochet in the stitch behind it right just pull through two yarn over pull through three And so this is why it extended So you see how if we didn it could pull and make the fabric pucker
10:48
But in doing that extended stitch and using double crochets, we don't have to worry about the fabric scrunching
10:58
So double crochet in the next three stitches. All right, front post extended treble around this post two rows below
11:14
Don't forget to make that half the little crochet behind it
11:28
I mean you could do it without, it's just you will get the typical gap. gap at the back of the fabric and this modification allows you to create a solid
11:39
fabric so double crochet in the next three stitches front post extended
11:47
treble around the post two rows below again making that half dough crochet
12:01
pull through don't crochet next three definitely head over to creations by
12:11
Courtney.com if you would like the written instructions to refer to while also
12:17
watching the video so front post extended treble around the post two rows below
12:31
And do you see how this is going to come together? And we will double crochet in the last two stitches
12:43
Alright, let's take a look. You like how it's starting
12:56
And so one thing to note is that this fabric will lean
13:00
lean because of the post stitches. The edges are straight, but they will appear to not be straight
13:08
So don't worry that if you make a huge swatch or that you're following along a pattern like the winding vest
13:18
it is totally normal that the fabric will lean. It's due to the modification of these stitches
13:27
So do you see it starting to lean? Again, the hook is straight
13:34
You see how that's leaning. All right, so turn your work and do a row of double crochet and then we will come back together
13:45
for row seven. All right
14:06
So now that we have two rows of post stitches and you look at the fabric, we don't have the gap at the back
14:15
That's because of the modification, right? So as you see, it pulls in a little bit, but that's okay
14:22
Especially because I'm using wool of the Andes, which is 100% wool
14:25
This can be blocked in order to straighten out the edges. So, okay. So now we're going to start row seven with a double crochet
14:39
And we're literally going to work around this stitch two rows below
14:47
So make your front post extended around the first single crochet, double crochet
14:53
Yarn over, pull up a loop, pull through one, yarn over, pull through two
14:58
pull through two, make your half double crochet, pull through all three
15:08
Now just make three double crochet because we always work three double crochet between
15:14
the front post extended treble stitches. Again working around the post two rows below
15:28
And now make your three double crochet
15:40
I want to do that board. Now make your next front post extended treble around the post two rows below And just continue until you get
16:11
to the end. Okay. So now that we're at the end we have two stitches left
16:21
We are going to make the next front post extended. And then double crochet into the last stitch
16:46
So if you're keeping up the pattern, that does mean we could stop here
16:53
but we're actually going to after we make the next row row eight and then come back for nine
17:00
we're actually going to work on that edge yep working on the edges so
17:06
I'll see you back after you make your row of double crochet for the start of row
17:12
nine okay so we've now finished row eight and we're going to turn our work
17:20
we're going to do a chain with starting double crochet
17:30
just like so we're going to do another double crochet
17:39
okay and we're going to work around this post with a front post extended
17:48
trouble. Make your half double crochet, finish this stitch
18:02
and then double crocheting the next three stitches. So continue in pattern
18:13
and I will meet you at the end of this row. Okay
18:25
So we are down to the last four stitches. We will make our double crochet
18:35
It's all right. Yarns going everywhere. So typically we would not make a post stitch because there's nothing to attach it to
18:43
There's no additional stitch to work into. But this is where the modification comes in hand
18:48
So we're going to work around the post two rows below. And we're going to make our half double crochet into the top of that last stitch
19:07
And voila. Get to work a postage all the way to the edge
19:15
So really, that's the pattern. right is that we started here worked across
19:22
It's one stitch over each row, right? So once you get the foundation rows, this is so easy to follow
19:29
So again, you'll make double crochet going back around, and then you'll be back to having
19:36
your starting double crochet and then two double crochet, just like we did here, right
19:43
Because we have two, and then you'll have two more, and then the postage will be above
19:48
this one and not directly above the last one it'll be slightly over so that you'll work around this
19:54
post just like we did here with row three and so on and so on and then once you have a bigger piece
20:03
you'll see this amazing winding look so i'll show you the bigger staple that i have of that
20:10
stitch has all kinds of yarn pieces so that when you make a bigger fabric and again the back is nice and smooth just look at that
20:28
and then when you flip it over look at how those post stitches come out isn't that lean
20:37
amazing and again it is so worth working along the edge to get such a lovely piece of
20:45
fabric. So remember from this to this. And that's all there is to the modified raised diagonals
20:54
