Hi, Courtney here of Creations by Courtney, the place where you'll find size inclusive garment patterns, accessories, as well as tutorials, so I can help the modern crocheter curate the handmade closet
0:30
the crossed extended double crochet. So this is an oldie. This is a stitch featured in one of my first patterns
0:42
And I decided to come back and revisit it and make a video because this is such a fun stitch that I think
0:50
Use a little more attention. So if you've checked out the picture tutorial, we do have a row, two rows of single crochet
1:00
crochet. So, seven, okay, we're going to do any multiple of two, three, seven, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. So I'm going to do a, any multiple of two
1:16
Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. So I'm going to make a smaller one than was in the picture tutorial because why not. So if you're going to start with a
1:30
a row of single crochet, half double, or whatever, before you start, again, make it a multiple of two
1:39
Now, if you're going to work just starting into the chain, this is a multiple of two, but then you want to add plus three for the, well, actually, plus two, for the start of the first double crochet
2:00
right so some people do a chain two some people do a chain three so if this are going to be the first one
2:08
we'll add two more stitches and this becomes the first double crochet right so rather than working in
2:15
the fourth chain from the hook we're actually going to work in the fifth chain from the hook you're going to
2:21
yarn over and search your hook through yarn over pull up a loop so this is very much like a double
2:29
but the difference with an extended double crochet are the pull-throughs, the yarn over and pull-throughs
2:37
So we're going to yarn over and pull through one. So this is almost like making a chain
2:43
Now we still have three loops on our hook. Now we're going to yarn over and pull through two
2:49
So what the extended stitches do, it gives it a little more height
2:54
It's a nice in between the regular double crochet and a... travel and so it does have this interesting yarn over but that's okay so now we're
3:07
gonna yarn over and we gonna work into the stitch that we skipped and so this can be a bit fiddly so you honestly can go either way you can either go from the front like so or if you find it easier and for me I find this way to be easier working from the back
3:27
So pulling the stitch to the fore to the front, and search your hook under the skip stitch
3:33
yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through one, yarn over, pull through two
3:40
y'all never pulled through two. And so that is the first crossed extended double crochet
3:48
So we're going to skip the next stitch and then work into the following one
3:54
Remember you do an extended double crochet. This can be done with a double crochet, but what happens is that it bunches
4:05
And again, if you're working in a chain like this, it's a little fiddle
4:10
which is why I recommend creating at least one row of another stitch
4:18
So there's just a stronger foundation to work with, right? And so we'll just continue
4:25
Always remember to skip the first one. Work into the following stitch
4:33
Yarn over pull through one. Yarn over pulled through two. Yon over pull through two
4:38
Work into the skipped stitch. insert the hook yarn over pull up a loop yarn over pull through one you're never pull through two
4:50
you're never pull through two again the first row may feel a little wonky especially without other
5:01
stitches but it gets easier right and so this is such a straightforward stitch
5:10
pattern. It's like, why aren't we using it more? So it's nice to go back and visit. Oh, wait, see
5:19
almost did what you shouldn't do. Don't work into the next one. Remember to always skip a stitch
5:25
and then work into the next one when creating the crossed extended double crochet
5:35
Because it's only slightly taller than a double crochet, but not as tall
5:40
is a treble crochet. This is why we're using a standard double crochet at the beginning
5:46
and the end of the row. And so we will put a double crochet here. And now we have the first
5:56
row. And look at that dimension. Can you see that? Look at that. It's so fun. So, so fun
6:05
And to create a visual interest, if you do the stitch in the same way after you turn
6:10
making sure to cross it works. It keeps the pattern consistent. Now if you want to switch it up
6:18
then you're going to work and start your hook differently. I'll show you what I mean. So for me
6:24
I prefer to do a chainless starting double where you pull up a loop, you wrap the yarn around
6:30
the hook I go through the stitch yarn over pull through two yarn over pull through two So to me it feels like it creates a better foundation keeps everything lined up
6:42
So again, skip a stitch, work into the next one. Let's create the first extended double crochet
6:50
of the crossed one. So last round, we were working behind like so
6:58
Right? So let's see what that looks like. So it keeps the pattern consistent, even on this side, right
7:13
That they're leaning. But if you want it to switch it up and just remember what you do, you can work from the front
7:24
So it helps to push the stitch to the back, kind of hold it in place with your finger
7:31
work and put your hook through, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through one, yarn over, pull through two
7:40
So again, you still get that lovely cross stitch, but now the direction of the fabric looks a little
7:47
different. So let's do some more. Remember to always skip a stitch. Oh, oh. Remember I only do one
7:54
yarn over. Right. And again, this definitely feels fidly
8:06
working from the front and you may find it easier to work from the back
8:10
like on the previous row. Just whatever you do for the row, just do it consistently
8:19
Goodness, I must have troubles on the mind. Sorry for the pun
8:27
I couldn't help myself. Again, this is a good in between for double crochet
8:38
treble crochet, but it can also help you meet row gauge. If your row gauge is short, but your stitch width is on point
8:49
the extended can help if you need to make it taller without
8:54
making it too tall. All righty. So now we're almost here at the end
9:07
All right. Again, it hopes to push the stitch to the back and put your finger through
9:18
All right. There we go. oh goodness i think i made a trouble again i have trouble on my mind
9:28
there we go walking through making that extended double
9:46
and then we just put a double crochet at the end again I like to work under both loops which can totally hide sometimes
10:01
because of that chain and it tightens. But there we go. So now we have two rows
10:11
And just look at the texture. It just makes it kind of squishy. Definitely three-dimensional
10:17
So if you like, let's do one more row. And again, additionally, having a at least one row below will also help with the overall shape of the piece of fabric that you're using, creating
10:40
So remember, you skip a stitch. I'm going to go back to the way I did it, the first row
10:47
Now the yarn is all twisted by working from the back going behind the first stitch, the extended
11:04
and so again we're doing an extended stitch to keep it from bunching up too much
11:13
and really bringing the height of the fabric down. making it scrunchy, so to speak
11:24
As you can tell, it's much easier to work this way when crossing, or at least for me
11:31
But like I said, you can do it whichever way you have a preference for and your unique way of crocheting
11:38
Just be consistent unless that's going to be part of the project that you're working on in crossing in different directions
11:47
But for this, we're going to make it consistent across the row
11:58
There we go. And then double crochet in the top of the double crochet
12:07
So with this yarn, it's a little funny to find, but do your best to work under those top two loops
12:17
And there you have it. That's the cross-extended double crochet. Again, it's creating a lovely texture
12:26
And if we continue to alternate, almost create like a hairy-bone effect
12:32
You can get it on both sides of the fabric. So, hope you enjoyed this tutorial of the cross-extended double crochet
