1:59
Uh
2:01
well, fitness crossed that technology
2:04
does not fail today, especially because
2:07
well,
2:08
I'm with and if it's Verizon again, my
2:11
lucky day. Especially when I have almost
2:13
a few more math classes to get through
2:16
and come on Verizon, help me get through
2:19
this hell of a course. It's already been
2:20
hell, I don't need more hell,
2:22
but they're putting me through hell.
2:24
Thanks. What I pay them for.
2:27
Apparently.
2:28
Anyway, that's my spiel for today. All
2:31
right, this is it.
2:33
Today's guest is a health coach.
2:37
He's going to be talking about
2:38
everything around healthy living
2:41
with
2:42
around 40 plus, but
2:45
I'm sure he's going to give us
2:48
tips and tricks on how to live our best
2:50
healthy lives yet.
2:52
>> [snorts]
2:53
>> So, without further ado, let's welcome
2:56
Brian on the show. Hey Brian.
2:59
>> Hey Jimmy, thanks for having me on.
3:02
>> Thanks for coming on.
3:03
Before we get started, can you tell us a
3:06
little bit about who you are, what you
3:08
do, how you got started, and why you got
3:10
started?
3:12
>> Yeah, so I am a health coach outside the
3:14
Chicago area and I have been in the
3:18
health and wellness business for gosh,
3:21
about 20 years now. I started out doing
3:24
training in the studio
3:26
and it's
3:28
sort of led me down the path of learning
3:30
more about you know, nutrition and meal
3:34
timing and
3:36
stress management and sleep. And so,
3:40
I've taken my training business and
3:43
turned it more into
3:45
I'd say a well-rounded
3:49
business as far as consulting with
3:50
mainly middle-aged males and helping
3:53
them
3:54
either get back into shape or
3:57
get into shape they've never been into.
4:00
So, that's pretty much the main niche I
4:03
work with. Uh,
4:04
and what prompted me to get into this
4:07
business was
4:09
something I was always interested in.
4:10
Used to be in the corporate world and
4:12
wanted to do something a little more
4:14
impactful regarding health and wellness.
4:16
And it's something that I sort of follow
4:17
with my own lifestyle. And
4:20
yeah, so I I just decided to uh uh
4:23
make it make it a full-time um
4:26
job. And I also host a podcast, The Get
4:29
Lean E Clean Podcast. And uh yeah, I
4:32
just uh you know, love helping people
4:33
reach their goals.
4:36
>> That sounds awesome, especially because,
4:39
you know, uh
4:41
I I think this is like the perfect time
4:43
to talk about
4:45
uh health and wellness. And I mean,
4:46
anytime is a perfect time to have talk
4:48
of health and wellness,
4:49
but uh
4:51
I can sure go to to uh for some stre- uh
4:54
stress management tips at the moment,
4:56
especially when I have really
4:58
back-to-back tests, one that I car
5:01
uh I'm that I'm bombed on, so I can't do
5:03
any worse. So, the bar is set low. But,
5:06
uh uh
5:08
but then I have a final that
5:10
that's accumulative. So, I'm like
5:13
great. It has seven chapters of math.
5:16
So, anything can go wrong.
5:19
>> Yeah. Yeah, well, I mean, stress
5:21
management, a big part of that is a
5:24
prioritizing a little bit of time for
5:26
that. Sometimes it's easier said than
5:29
done, but uh
5:31
anyways, yeah. I I I hear you. I haven't
5:34
taken many tests in a while, but
5:36
um
5:37
I'm sure you'll get through it just
5:38
fine.
5:38
>> I'm hoping.
5:40
Uh
5:40
so, and then
5:42
so, my first question for you is
5:45
uh
5:46
what are some
5:47
biggest challenges people
5:49
uh face when they're working with you?
5:54
>> Yeah, I would say probably the one of
5:56
the biggest challenges that people face
5:58
is um
5:59
sort of getting out of their own way.
6:01
Because a lot of people that I work with
6:03
are, you know, 40 years and older.
6:06
Um and they had habits for 20, 30, 40
6:10
years and some of these habits haven't
6:12
served them so well. So,
6:15
making these habitual changes takes time
6:17
and it takes sort of a mindset shift.
6:19
And so,
6:21
getting out of their own way is is a big
6:22
one and then understanding like why they
6:24
want to actually make the change and
6:27
creating some clarity around that um is
6:29
another obstacle that we we tend to
6:31
focus on early on.
6:34
>> So,
6:35
I I I wanted to ask you a little bit
6:38
further.
6:39
How
6:40
when you say somebody get to get out of
6:42
their own way, what do you mean by that?
6:45
Like, can you give us a some examples of
6:47
somebody getting in their own way?
6:50
>> Yeah. So,
6:52
you know, one of those things could be
6:55
uh simply the fact that an individual
6:58
portrays himself a certain way.
7:00
I had a uh client who I noticed when we
7:03
would talk every week, he would um
7:07
he referred himself as like the fat guy.
7:10
So, he was identifying a certain way and
7:12
he was saying it in what he thought was
7:14
somewhat of a joking matter, but he's
7:16
probably been saying saying this about
7:18
himself for the past 30, 40, however
7:21
many years.
7:22
And so, you know, words matter when it
7:25
comes to that and I think if you're
7:26
telling yourself those things even
7:28
though you think you're somewhat joking,
7:30
if it's a you know, daily, weekly
7:32
occurrence,
7:33
uh it tends to come true and so, you
7:36
know, that's just one example of someone
7:37
sort of getting in their own way.
7:40
>> I think I think
7:42
I think for me, I've gotten my own way
7:44
in my head at times where
7:47
I keep I feel like people are always mad
7:50
at me for doing I mean, just being
7:53
myself or if I'm
7:55
uh I always feel like I'm being judged
7:57
by others and maybe it's just in my own
7:59
head.
8:01
Like I for for instance,
8:03
I just keep keep thinking my parents
8:06
might be
8:06
up upset with me that I just can't stand
8:09
math or I can or I don't or I'm just
8:13
scraping by on math this semester. Uh
8:17
math is not my strong suit.
8:19
And I said to myself multiple times I'm
8:22
not strong at math and I probably did
8:26
beat a dead horse into my brain, but
8:29
uh
8:30
let us say I'm not becoming an
8:31
accountant anytime soon.
8:34
>> [laughter]
8:35
>> Well, that's okay. I dig uh
8:37
Yeah, I think we all have our strong
8:40
suits and we have to sort of identify
8:41
what we're what we're good at and you
8:43
know, something that you're not as
8:44
strong at like like you mentioned math.
8:47
It doesn't probably help the matter to
8:49
tell yourself that you're not good at
8:50
it, but
8:52
uh it's just one of those things where
8:53
maybe you just got to work a little bit
8:55
harder in that in that on that subject
8:58
to to make it so it's not your weakness,
9:00
but you know, that obviously takes time
9:03
and effort and um you know, so but it
9:06
but everyone has weaknesses. So it's
9:08
just about identifying it and then
9:10
trying to maybe turn it into a strength
9:12
or at least get it so it's not not
9:14
letting behind as much.
9:16
>> Yeah. So my next question for you is
9:18
What can
9:20
What can do What can people do to start
9:22
living a healthier lifestyle
9:24
by getting out of their own way and
9:28
um yeah.
9:30
>> Well, I think first and foremost, you
9:33
know, in order to
9:34
if they feel like they're sort of being
9:37
held back by themselves
9:39
by a lot of the routine that they do on
9:42
a daily basis, I think it's important to
9:44
identify like
9:46
having
9:47
you know, healthy routines that they can
9:51
follow.
9:52
Um
9:53
if an individual keeps telling
9:55
themselves every year that they want to
9:57
start lifting weights and they never do
9:59
it and every year it's the same thing
10:01
over and over again. Well, I would say
10:04
to that person maybe it's time to either
10:06
hire someone, hire a coach. I think
10:08
that's really helpful in order to get
10:11
help in order to help you um
10:15
push through and when you're accountable
10:17
to someone,
10:18
uh you know, it sort of takes the onus
10:20
off you and puts it on someone else a
10:22
little bit and it's and it's helpful to
10:23
have that. So,
10:25
you know, if someone's stuck in their
10:26
own in their own bad habits, I think
10:28
having a coach is big and then having
10:31
that coach help implement habits that'll
10:33
be, you know, helpful to lead a healthy
10:35
life, whether that's, you know, lifting
10:37
weights or or you know, going for a walk
10:40
or whatever it is or eating a different
10:42
way. Um I think it's I had coaches in
10:44
all all aspects, a lot of aspects of
10:46
life that I need help in and that helps
10:50
me get through, you know, those periods
10:52
of time.
10:56
>> I can relate to some of that
10:58
a little bit where I
11:01
there was a point in time in my life
11:03
where I thought I could have see
11:04
anything and anything.
11:06
Like and there won't be any consequences
11:09
to my body.
11:11
Um I mean, like gaining weight or
11:13
anything. I was like, "Oh, I'm working
11:14
out. I can eat whatever I want."
11:16
It doesn't work that way.
11:18
Uh
11:19
I was not seeing progress and
11:22
uh
11:23
my dad's friend
11:25
who used to be a personal trainer,
11:28
he gave me some tips and tricks on
11:31
"Hey, you need to do a X, Y, and Z." Uh
11:34
I'm not going to share you what what X
11:35
and Y and Z are just because everybody's
11:38
different. This This method worked for
11:40
me, so I'm not going to
11:43
just [laughter]
11:44
uh share with everybody because then
11:45
it's like, "Oh, you're giving me expert
11:46
advice." No, I just I just did what he
11:49
um
11:50
what he told me because it worked for
11:51
me.
11:52
Helped me lose my 30 lbs.
11:55
It was just like it it was just a
11:58
nutrition
12:00
change. And he's like, "If you need a
12:02
cheat meal, have it like have half of it
12:06
or less than half of it, not a third or
12:09
whatever."
12:10
And so I I I
12:12
I took that to heart and
12:16
my parents helped me stay accountable.
12:19
And there was even a time when they
12:22
removed a lot of
12:23
that stuff from the house or put it in
12:26
places where I can't find anything to
12:29
do unhealthily snack on. So, I
12:33
appreciated that because as I
12:35
"Oh, let's just keep a bunch of junk in
12:36
my freedom on the house. That's a good
12:38
idea."
12:41
>> Yeah.
12:43
Never a good idea.
12:45
If you don't buy it, you don't eat it.
12:47
And if it's not sitting out on the
12:49
counter, there's a less less of a
12:51
chance, right?
12:52
>> Yeah.
12:53
They kind of have to go through digging
12:54
for it
12:56
and
12:57
like
12:58
I'll give you an example of
13:00
that time when I went digging for it. It
13:03
was just a
13:04
recent
13:06
It was a few weekends ago
13:10
and I wanted some
13:12
something sweet, a little ice cream.
13:14
And
13:17
like the first flavor that I had, it was
13:19
like I forgot the first flavor, but it
13:21
was like really good. And then the
13:23
second one was just plain chocolate. And
13:26
I was like I really didn't need the
13:27
second one. I was like
13:29
And don't And don't get me wrong, I like
13:31
chocolate, but when you
13:33
my taste buds were looking for something
13:35
different and I was looking for and I
13:37
was like
13:39
chocolate. And I didn't
13:41
need that. It was just boring.
13:44
Yeah, once you had everything.
13:47
>> Yeah.
13:49
Yeah, a lot of temptations out there.
13:52
So, but you know, going back to your
13:54
question, I mean,
13:56
I think it's important to understand
13:58
like
13:59
take one thing at a time. And so, if
14:01
you're going to make any type of
14:02
changes, I would start with one thing
14:04
and focus on that.
14:06
And and once you get that down, then you
14:09
can move on to something else. But
14:10
sometimes people try to do too much all
14:12
at once and and then they end up doing
14:14
nothing.
14:16
>> Um so, my next question for you is
14:19
uh
14:20
what could people
14:23
how long does it take to create a better
14:25
habit? Like
14:27
is it like a certain amount of days or
14:32
um
14:33
years, months?
14:35
>> Yeah.
14:36
>> [gasps and sighs]
14:36
>> That's a good question. I think it
14:38
depends on the individual. I know
14:41
there's you know, there's studies like
14:43
you know, it takes 21 days or however
14:45
many days to form a new habit, but I
14:48
would say it's more of an individual
14:50
basis and what their history is,
14:53
then how old they are, um
14:56
you know, if someone has an old habit
14:58
for a long time, it you can definitely
14:59
break that habit, but it might take some
15:02
longer than someone else who's maybe a
15:04
little bit younger and doesn't hasn't
15:05
doesn't have as many bad habits. So,
15:09
I think it's just a matter of, you know,
15:11
consistently implementing that habit and
15:14
not getting stuck on something new, um
15:17
cuz that's what happens a lot of times.
15:19
People will start something and then end
15:20
up stopping it a couple weeks later, so
15:23
I think it goes back to just focusing on
15:25
one thing until it becomes a habit, and
15:27
how long that takes is a good question.
15:29
I don't I can't give you a definite
15:31
answer on that,
15:32
but it depends definitely on the
15:33
individual.
15:34
>> Uh
15:35
I know uh
15:37
like I've been trying to break a habit
15:39
uh that I
15:41
have done over the years,
15:43
and
15:44
it's
15:46
I've been
15:48
I I think one thing that keeps on like
15:50
deflating myself is when I see the
15:53
it's kind of like the uh
15:56
pass or fail kind of method, and like
16:00
you're successful on this day, you're
16:01
successful on this day, and all of a
16:03
sudden when you mess up, it's like back
16:05
to square one. And like
16:08
good.
16:09
Um I'm I'm being sarcastic, but it's uh
16:14
it's kind of like the downgrading a
16:16
little bit when you see big fat zero.
16:19
>> Big what? I'm sorry.
16:21
>> Big fat zero meaning zero.
16:23
>> Oh. Yeah, well, no, I it can be
16:26
deflating.
16:27
I think if you try to get small wins,
16:30
small wins early on and build some
16:31
momentum, that really can help.
16:35
>> So, my next question for you is what is
16:38
What are some ways for people that can
16:40
continuously
16:42
keep going after their
16:45
um
16:46
their healthy living lifestyles and
16:49
creating better um
16:51
improving
16:53
Let me rephrase that. Making better
16:57
uh habits than bad habits.
17:00
>> Well, I think first and foremost is
17:01
understanding sort of why why you want
17:03
to make a change. Have a really strong
17:06
why.
17:07
Uh whether this is s- maybe being able
17:10
to play with your kids or grandkids or
17:12
or uh being able to walk without getting
17:16
out of breath or go up the stairs
17:18
without, you know, whatever
17:19
sort of that driving why is. I think
17:21
it's important to have that for an
17:23
individual. And because you're going to
17:25
have sort of these ups and downs when it
17:28
comes to
17:29
um your habits and and being able to
17:31
break them and create new ones. So,
17:34
I think it's important to really
17:36
understand your why.
17:37
And then from there,
17:39
like I said, yeah,
17:41
take one at a time and sort of build it
17:43
from there.
17:45
>> So, my next question for you is what
17:47
Why do you think most [clears throat]
17:49
people fail at creating better habits
17:52
like
17:53
I I know you said
17:55
uh
17:57
that I I know that you said
18:00
it's uh
18:02
lack of motivation or maybe it's just
18:05
maybe
18:06
uh lack of motivation or they don't have
18:09
a strong why.
18:11
>> Mhm.
18:12
>> Or they don't have a coach, but
18:15
could it also be possibly be that that
18:19
uh there's just so many temptations
18:21
around them.
18:22
>> Yeah, for sure. For sure. It could be
18:25
Also, it could be a product of the
18:28
people that they're around is why they
18:30
might fail as well. I mean, we're
18:32
influenced so much about regarding our
18:34
community.
18:35
And so, if you find that you're hanging
18:37
out with individuals that are not
18:40
serving your goals
18:42
and where you want to get to, I think
18:44
that's important to find people who are
18:46
who are, you know, doing things and
18:49
succeeding at things that you would like
18:50
to do or succeed at. And so, that could
18:53
be something that really holds a lot of
18:55
people back. I think community is really
18:57
important. I think that's why
18:59
uh, like, for example, CrossFit hit hit
19:01
became [clears throat] so big was
19:02
because of that community.
19:04
Uh, so
19:06
if if you feel like you just keep
19:07
falling in the same place,
19:09
maybe it's time to change the people
19:11
that you surround yourself with.
19:16
>> That's what I've been uh, doing a little
19:17
bit myself is uh, the past couple of
19:20
months. I've been figuring out who's
19:23
been in my corner, who has been
19:27
who has
19:28
I mean, they don't always have to be
19:29
like checking in on me or whatnot.
19:33
That's I get life busy and whatnot, but
19:36
who has just keep showing up time and
19:38
time over again. And then, there's some
19:40
people I just let go because
19:43
a, they served a purpose
19:46
years ago when I was in
19:49
when I needed somebody to be there in
19:52
the same situation I was in, and then
19:56
they moved on and I moved on and say,
19:58
this person's just not
20:00
never been in my corner since, so I'm
20:02
like, bye-bye.
20:04
>> [snorts]
20:06
>> How does that feel?
20:07
>> Yeah.
20:09
I've got it.
20:10
>> Yeah. So, uh
20:12
uh
20:14
What are some other
20:16
challenges that people face when they're
20:18
living a healthy lifestyle?
20:21
>> Well, let's see. We've talked about
20:23
temptation and we talked about
20:25
consistency as far as like getting
20:28
started and and maybe hiring a coach
20:30
would be helpful. Um some other
20:32
challenges, like we mentioned, maybe
20:35
maybe the individuals that they surround
20:37
themselves with is another one.
20:39
Um
20:40
obviously, there's temptation at every
20:43
block and every corner.
20:45
I think it's important to set yourself
20:48
up up for success. And by
20:52
And ways to do that, for example, we
20:53
talked about a little bit already, is if
20:56
you don't buy it, you're not going to
20:58
eat it, right? So, like
21:00
avoiding the temptation altogether and
21:02
not having it sort of be around is
21:05
really important.
21:07
>> Hey, it's Jimmy Claire. If you're
21:08

21:19
Visit AppSumo or visit the link in the
21:22

21:27
>> [music]
21:28
>> Um also setting time aside for whether
21:33
it's going for a walk or it could be
21:36
meditation
21:38
uh
21:39
or resistance training. You know, if you
21:42
don't prioritize it, it's probably not
21:44
going to happen and I see that with a
21:45
lot of people where they say, "Oh, I'm
21:47
going to work out." but they sort of
21:48
save it to the end of the day and they
21:50
end up making excuses. So,
21:52
I just think that it's about cultivating
21:55
an environment that's going to help you
21:57
succeed and take those next steps to
22:01
live a healthy lifestyle.
22:03
>> I agree with that, especially because
22:06
uh my health
22:10
I've had my ups and downs uh
22:13
like I
22:14
I'll admit this on my
22:16
uh on the show that I did gain some
22:18
weight from
22:20
probably the lot of stress from math,
22:22
especially because there's are many ways
22:24
you can mess up and have similar
22:26
problems.
22:27
And then uh whether it's a running
22:29
issue, etc. And then there's also
22:35
I'm after I last time I weighed myself
22:38
which
22:38
was this past Saturday, I decided
22:41
as I I'm taking a stand here as I am
22:45
as I I'm not going backwards to where
22:48
what I was at.
22:49
>> [snorts]
22:51
>> And as I I got to figure out how to
22:54
manage my stress levels better cuz it's
22:57
not working very well these days. So,
23:01
I I've been going back to
23:04
life of boom where going back to the
23:06
books and figure out
23:09
better ways to manage my time and
23:11
stress. And I noticed the last few
23:15
nights and into the weekends I haven't
23:18
been able to
23:20
relax and read my book before I go to
23:22
bed because I just been thinking about
23:25
A B C D E F G and am I
23:29
No, what am I correct because I'm not
23:32
having prioritizing
23:34
some downtime. I'm not prioritizing
23:37
any self-care before the end of the day.
23:40
I mean, I'm still going karate classes,
23:42
but let's be honest,
23:45
that's not relaxing before bed. That's a
23:48
workout before bed. But I mean, it can
23:51
be relaxing just get all that energy out
23:53
of you, but then it's like, "Okay, now
23:56
how do I relax from a 45-minute class?"
24:02
>> Yeah, like you said, it just comes down
24:04
to prioritizing it as much as you can.
24:07
>> And I've been keeping track and so I was
24:09
like, "Okay, I guess I'm fitting time in
24:12
for this because I'm getting tired of
24:14
this whole
24:15
uh mess of a hamster wheel I'm on.
24:19
And then I got to get off the hamster
24:21
wheel."
24:23
So, my next question for you is
24:26
uh
24:26
how do you for yourself, how do you
24:28
prioritize
24:30
healthy living?
24:32
>> Mhm.
24:33
It's a good question. I I would say that
24:36
I've been doing it for so long, it's
24:37
become habitual, but I think one of the
24:40
main things I do is I
24:44
plan it the night before or the day
24:46
before what my day will look like.
24:49
And so, I
24:51
typically block out that time like I
24:53
would block out a podcast interview or
24:56
recording or
24:58
a coaching
25:00
or you know, coaching
25:02
client. So, that's how I do it. I plan
25:06
it the the day before. I don't wait till
25:08
the day of to make decisions around
25:11
healthy habits. I I I do that the night
25:13
before.
25:15
>> Yeah, that's that's important because
25:17
in my
25:18
calendar, I use Google Calendar because
25:21
free.
25:22
I
25:23
I I do have uh certain time blocks for
25:27
reading and some other things, but it is
25:31
I've been busy studying and whatnot.
25:34
It's
25:35
uh
25:35
it gets overlooked sometimes because
25:38
uh I mean
25:40
my last year weeks because been most
25:42
nights because the tutoring either went
25:45
late or I've been
25:48
uh
25:49
so consumed with so many numbers or so
25:51
much text as I let me just watch TV.
25:55
>> [gasps]
25:56
>> I was like, got to give him
25:58
And I'm I'm not making excuses. I'm just
26:01
sharing
26:02
of what's going on in my so many words
26:04
of math problems. Do I want to read more
26:07
words?
26:08
>> Mhm.
26:12
>> So, that's where my brain's been at. Too
26:14
many words, too many math problems, and
26:16
too many numbers. I have nightmares
26:18
about numbers now.
26:20
>> [laughter]
26:22
>> A big letter a big number is going to
26:24
eat me. Good.
26:26
>> Mhm.
26:28
>> So, my next question for you is
26:31
what are the benefits of
26:33
uh having a healthy lifestyle like a
26:36
balanced lifestyle?
26:38
>> Oh, I mean lots of benefits. I mean if
26:40
you talk about resistance training,
26:42
right?
26:43
Uh strength training, you have better
26:45
bone mass, better lean mass, more muscle
26:48
mass. I mean these are things that if
26:50
you don't do them, they will you'll lose
26:53
them essentially and you'll you know
26:55
sarcopenia something uh
26:57
which means you know muscle loss as we
27:00
age is a real thing. So
27:03
that's going to allow you to do certain
27:06
things as you get older like just
27:07
getting up or you know um
27:10
or or getting going and picking
27:12
something up, you know, the little
27:13
things
27:15
will be more difficult if you're not
27:16
setting yourself up for success. I stay
27:19
active doing resistance training or
27:22
walking and
27:23
things like that. Um obviously managing
27:26
blood sugar is a big one as well. So it
27:28
helps with that.
27:30
And the more muscle you have the
27:33
the better you're at it um metabolizing
27:36
glucose.
27:38
And so yeah, there's I mean we could
27:41
probably do a whole whole episode on
27:43
resistance training and and its
27:45
benefits.
27:46
Um
27:47
but obviously healthy eating
27:49
um
27:50
you know, you said set yourself up for
27:51
success. You you'll have better gut
27:53
health,
27:54
um more energy and uh
27:58
essentially um
28:00
you know, feel better, sleep better, you
28:02
know
28:03
stress management's a big one as well,
28:05
right? If if if we're if we're
28:07
implementing
28:08
um healthy habits around stress, we're
28:10
able to handle things better and um and
28:14
that'll help with better sleep, uh
28:16
cortisol levels which is you know,
28:18
something we want to keep under on the
28:20
wraps and not you know, being sort of in
28:21
a fighting flight mode all the time. So
28:25
yeah, lots of great benefits from stay
28:27
active or you know, being you know,
28:29
doing mindfulness practice and um and uh
28:33
yeah, going for walks and lifting and
28:34
things like that.
28:36
>> I'm hoping that when this weather starts
28:38
picking up, I mean,
28:40
consistently,
28:41
uh
28:42
warmer, etc. I'm hoping to
28:45
to be able to
28:47
uh start taking some walks here and
28:49
there in my neighborhood cuz it's a nice
28:52
neighborhood.
28:53
Uh
28:54
but
28:55
I can't imagine myself going outside in
28:58
20-degree weather.
29:00
And I go down for a walk and say, "Oh
29:03
yeah, I might go out for a chilly walk."
29:05
I thought that's a great idea. Nah.
29:07
What the heck am I thinking?
29:10
>> Yeah.
29:12
Yeah, well, I you know, I'm in Chicago.
29:14
We have cold weather.
29:15
Uh I just put on a lot of layers and go
29:18
cuz I do dog.
29:20
So.
29:21
>> Well, it's you know, it's funny
29:22
when I was in
29:24
Ireland
29:25
last year
29:26
uh for my dad's birthday, he we were
29:29
talk
29:30
It was funny. This
29:33
The people that is like so nice and
29:36
everything, they said
29:38
the person said like, "You know, there's
29:40
no such thing as bad weather, just bad
29:42
clothing."
29:43
>> All right. I like that.
29:45
>> And I was like
29:46
somebody should put that on a t-shirt.
29:49
>> [laughter]
29:50
[snorts]
29:50
>> Yeah.
29:51
>> Yeah.
29:51
>> That's a good saying. There's no bad
29:53
weather, just bad clothing and bad
29:55
choices what you're wearing.
29:57
>> Yeah, I like that.
29:59
>> Like you know, it's funny, some people
30:01
are like, "Well, Jimmy, why don't you
30:02
wear a long-sleeve t-shirt in the
30:04
in the winter?" I was like
30:06
I would, I don't have any.
30:08
>> All right.
30:11
>> I feel like I'm like I kind of feel like
30:12
I'm trapped in a long-sleeve t-shirt. I
30:16
don't like the feeling of feeling
30:17
trapped. I don't know. I mean, I wear a
30:20
sweatshirt all the day if I'm just cold
30:23
in the house and what not, but it's
30:25
lightweight.
30:26
But there's long sleeves under this and
30:29
that. I was like
30:31
No.
30:34
I don't know, that's just me.
30:37
Uh
30:39
So,
30:41
what are some uh
30:43
fun ways that people can incorporate
30:45
healthy living into their lives because
30:48
I know some people I've had on the show
30:50
who said and past interviews who said
30:55
I
30:56
uh I hate working out so I'm going to
31:00
uh
31:01
but I force myself to do it anyway or I
31:03
have to spend X amount of hours at the
31:05
gym.
31:06
>> Yeah. Well, I think that is one
31:09
important sort of
31:12
tip for everyone is to find something
31:14
that they enjoy
31:16
doing. Uh so, it doesn't necessarily
31:18
have to be in the gym
31:20
all the time. It could be
31:22
I mean, I know like pickleball has
31:25
become big here in Chicago.
31:28
Um
31:29
or tennis or swimming or kickboxing or
31:32
you know, whatever it is. I mean, I've
31:34
I've never been a big runner, so I've
31:36
always enjoyed doing like Muay Thai or
31:39
kickboxing as a form of a cardio.
31:43
Uh so, yeah, for sure. If you want to do
31:46
something long-term and have it be
31:48
sustainable, you got to enjoy it and um
31:51
and if you're not enjoying it, it's
31:53
probably not going to last. So, finding
31:54
something like you know, like that will
31:57
So, it's like I mentioned like tennis or
31:59
something that'll sort of keep you
32:01
coming back, I think is important.
32:04
>> That's funny that you bring up
32:06
kickboxing because yeah, I've been uh
32:08
>> [clears throat]
32:09
>> doing kickboxing classes at karate for
32:13
well, I started in 2017,
32:16
18, 19, 20, 21, 22.
32:20
So, I don't know, 8 years, I believe.
32:22
Right on the math, correct? Oh crap, my
32:24
math. Uh so,
32:27
I've been doing it 7 or 8 years straight
32:30
so far,
32:32
but in total, I've been
32:35
doing karate for 17 years.
32:38
Even though I had a uh
32:40
10-year break between
32:43
the years, but
32:45
I've been doing it for 17 years. And
32:47
people say, "Don't you get tired of it?"
32:49
And I was like, "No."
32:52
It's a very fun sport.
32:53
>> Right on, yeah.
32:55
>> I mean, I know it's a dangerous, but I
32:58
mean,
32:59
the
33:01
the place I train at
33:02
at the it's in a safe environment, so
33:05
it's not like where
33:07
trying to knock someone's head off and
33:09
across the room.
33:11
You don't have to go fighting in the
33:12
ring or whatnot.
33:14
It's on a mat.
33:16
It's padded.
33:17
>> [snorts]
33:18
>> So,
33:19
so I
33:21
I I'll never train I will never get in a
33:23
ring professionally and not looking to.
33:25
I just
33:27
I've been working out for
33:29
12-plus years and
33:32
I wanted something to push me even
33:34
further past my limits, so I wanted that
33:38
adrenaline rush because as I I can
33:40
continue this way, it's
33:42
which I do, but
33:43
>> [snorts]
33:44
>> but then after a while you you kind of
33:46
see the same old same old where karate
33:50
if they you doing this combination
33:53
three times this week, but then they're
33:55
going to change it up on something else
33:57
brand new. And sometimes if you think
33:59
you see a pattern, they try to change it
34:01
up to you again. And so it's like,
34:03
"Wait, isn't it supposed to be this
34:05
sparring this week?" "No, we're doing
34:07
this."
34:08
So, it always throws me off my game. I
34:09
don't like those.
34:11
But you go with it anyway because it's
34:13
like
34:14
they're trying to keep me on my toes. I
34:15
appreciate this.
34:18
>> Yeah. Yeah, that's the fun thing about
34:20
karate or kickboxing. It's there's
34:22
always something new to learn.
34:25
>> And sometimes they like even I work out
34:27
at my own house, there's
34:29
I get tired sometimes the
34:32
the platform I use, I love it, but
34:35
sometimes the videos repeats itself and
34:39
as I
34:40
and they put a turn next year as I said,
34:43
"This is new."
34:44
I already did this last year. And I was
34:47
like, "No, you didn't." Like said last
34:50
last year that 2023.
34:54
>> Yeah.
34:56
>> Nice try.
34:57
>> [snorts]
34:58
>> I already know.
34:59
>> I like If you want me to really think
35:01
this is new, you should take that
35:03
feature out.
35:07
So,
35:08
my my next question for you is
35:11
uh
35:12
where do you see
35:14
yourself and your healthy living journey
35:16
in the next couple of years?
35:19
>> It's a good question. Um
35:21
I'll probably
35:23
Well, I recently came out with a book.
35:25
So, a lot of my efforts are being put
35:27
into that and getting it out there. So,
35:31
uh
35:31
I think just trying to reach reach the
35:33
masses more. You know, what I'm on
35:35
coaching is fun, but you can only
35:37
influence so many people with that. So,
35:40
that was part of my reasoning behind
35:42
writing the book,
35:44
uh the Step Ladder System, and helping
35:46
to just reach to reach out to more
35:49
people and influence them in a way that
35:52
can help them. So,
35:53
that's probably be a lot of my focus for
35:56
the next few years.
35:57
>> Yeah, I've been
35:58
huh I've been hoping to be able to write
36:01
a book at the moment, but my school and
36:03
then the way this semester
36:06
and I know some some might be thinking,
36:09
"But you just said go to
36:11
school." Yeah, I did, but I
36:14
I didn't
36:15
I know math was going to be extra work
36:18
for me, but I didn't think I would need
36:21
uh like
36:22
80% of the time
36:25
for it. I was thinking maybe like I
36:27
don't know, maybe 50/50 or 60/40.
36:31
It's It's not even been that, and so
36:33
it's just like
36:35
No, gosh darn it. And as I I could have
36:38
been like been like
36:40
consistently growing
36:43
at the beginning it's
36:45
beginning of the year but it's like
36:49
Damn it math, you keep getting away and
36:51
this is why I hate it even more.
36:55
My tutor has only been hearing me say
36:57
that and it's like I don't think it ever
36:59
came up that she said she hated math.
37:01
And I was like
37:02
I thought I finally said that about a
37:04
million times by now.
37:06
>> [gasps]
37:07
>> So I should put it on the record.
37:11
Uh
37:13
the my last few questions for you is
37:15
uh
37:16
Who's your favorite podcaster and why
37:18
and feel free not to say me.
37:20
>> Oh, who's my favorite podcaster? A good
37:23
buddy of mine has a podcast out of
37:24
California. His name is Brad Kearns. I'd
37:27
probably say
37:28
um he does a lot of great things. So
37:30
that's my favorite podcaster.
37:33
>> I thought you were going to say me. I'm
37:35
kidding.
37:36
>> [gasps]
37:37
>> Uh
37:38
My favorite my favorite would be uh
37:40
Lewis Howes of The School of Greatness.
37:43
Uh
37:44
Uh he is just very personable and has a
37:48
lot of great guests. Sometimes I can't
37:50
really listen to his full episodes so
37:52
sometimes I listen to his shorter ones.
37:55
Uh they're like 10 minutes versus
37:57
uh maybe 50 or 60 minutes.
38:00
Uh sometimes it's a little bit over 60
38:02
minutes but I don't mind but uh
38:05
when you're kind of crunched for time on
38:07
stuff is there
38:08
how do I fit this in?
38:12
Quick so let me give you a quick quick
38:13
tip. Uh uh
38:15
Uh
38:16
my next question for you is where can
38:18
people follow you, find you, and learn
38:20
more about who you are and what you do?
38:22
>> Yeah, best place BrianGrin.com
38:25
um and
38:27
uh the Get-Lean E-Clean Podcast.
38:30
>> Uh
38:30
and my next question for you is where
38:34
what is your podcast about and who and
38:38
who else who's your target audience and
38:41
uh
38:41
who who else and who are some of your
38:43
guests that you have on?
38:45
>> Yeah, I mean my target audience are
38:47
probably
38:48
health-centric individuals, you know,
38:50
who are looking for
38:52
actionable tips
38:54
to
38:56
live a healthier lifestyle. And some of
38:59
my guests
39:01
um
39:02
gosh, I've had
39:03
quite a wide array. I've 300 over 350
39:07
episodes.
39:09
Um
39:10
but I've had I've had Brad Kearns on.
39:13
I've had
39:15
a gentleman by name of Jay Feldman on.
39:19
I had Dr. Jason Fung, Ken Berry on.
39:23
And yeah, so we've had a wide array,
39:25
yeah.
39:26
>> Well, if you're always looking for a
39:27
guest, I'd be honored to come on
39:31
and I can share with you my health and
39:33
wellness journey.
39:35
Uh
39:35
I know I share it a little tip here and
39:37
there, but
39:38
>> Well.
39:39
>> I mean, it's a lot longer than that.
39:45
Well, well, I
39:47
we'll stay in touch and
39:51
and I hope we can collaborate in the
39:52
future.
39:53
>> Thanks, Jimmy. I appreciate you having
39:55
me on.
39:56
>> Definitely. And we'll stay in touch.
39:59
