Before starting the procedure we must know what is water cement ratio? W/c ratio is defined as the ratio of weight of water to the weight of cement required for a concrete mix. As we know concrete contains ingredients such as cement sand fine aggregates and coarse aggregates. We need correct proportion of admixture to combine these materials in order to achieve a desired compressive strength So water plays an important role in initiating the chemical reaction between water & cement which is known as hydration. This produces heat and is called as heat of hydration. Adding too much water will affect the strength of concrete as it will cause segregation of the sand and aggregate components of concrete. Also the excessive water which is not consumed by hydration reaction may leave the concrete as it hardens leaving behind pores. That will reduce the final strength of concrete. Hence an optimum water cement ratio is required to achieve a desirable compressive strength.
