I'm back in Chatanooga, TN this week after taking a week off due to illness. I really enjoyed seeing the beautiful homes and the incredible views of the surrounding valley and city below.

hello Walkers and welcome back to City walks the channel where I walk you around interesting towns and trails and
0:09
cities and locations and point out and find oh various things of interest or
0:16
prettiness I guess Beauty uh today we are in Chattanooga we're above
0:21
Chattanooga actually on Lookout Mountain uh I'm going to flip you around
0:28
here one two three my name is Henry I will be your proxy Walker today your virtual travel guide
0:36
uh your co-discoverer i' like to stress the c-cover bit uh because I don't I'm
0:42
not an expert on a lot of places most places actually and uh so I just like to
0:48
share with you my own Explorations and hopefully you enjoy that I will be talking pretty much the whole time so if
0:55
you're looking for a quiet silent uh walk there are other channels for that
1:01
so if you're looking for uh a nice way to entertain yourself during your
1:08
treadmill walk this might be the channel for you so I'm going to flip you around
1:15
again this is the entrance to Point Park and I'm going to walk us around just a
1:20
little bit around the outside before I go in there it is a federal or a
1:25
National Park Service site um there's some paid parking very limited free
1:32
parking a nice little Visitor Center that explains the Battle of Lookout
1:37
Mountain uh and uh which was a battle that took a place here in November of
1:47
1863 uh there's also another battle site nearby called chaga and Chattanooga
1:53
battle battle site um and it explains the overview of the
2:01
battle uh in The Visitor Center have a nice big kind of panoramic painting not
2:07
a cyron painting um and then they have this little Park here which is not huge
2:13
but it is pretty and quiet and we will get some amazing views of Chattanooga uh it is November about
2:23
almost 11 a.m. as we start this walk and it is 69° f 20°
2:30
celius and a pretty cool pleasant day some
2:37
squirrels over here and we'll get into I think uh I'll try and if we have time
2:44
I'll do a little walk around this really kind of fancy neighborhood some really nice
2:50
um homes and with amazing views of course this whole area was a battlefield
2:56
but they didn't Reserve all of that that for uh for the
3:06
park so we'll take a look at what they did down here and we'll get some good
3:11
views they've got this I don't believe this uh tassled edifice was here at the
3:19
time but uh it is now there is a fee to enter
3:25
the park you have a national parks pass that should cover you
3:31
um and they have a PID kiosk they also have paid parking if you can't find free
3:48
spot looks like only 10 bucks per person
4:02
yeah kids having a great time learning about some history burning off some
4:08
steam I'm hoping we don't get rained on here it is beautiful fall day here
4:20
the colors some reason my microphone's not working
4:30
sorry about that hopefully the audio turns out all right my old mic did not connect for some reason anyway let's
4:37
take a look out here over Chattanooga uh last summer I did a couple walks in downtown Chattanooga
4:44
area and the chattano Southside and you can see it kind of
4:51
stretching out there in the distance oh let me
4:56
reframe I believe this is the Tennessee
5:01
River should have known
5:08
that yep Tennessee River and I believe
5:14
chaga magwa is off to the right there we're actually I believe uh no I guess
5:22
we're in Tennessee um and it get a big sort of Oxbow
5:30
pattern here in the river um you can see the Fall colors I
5:37
think I was talking about that when I had to pause earlier off to the right somewhere
5:43
maybe off to the right somewhere there's a incline railway that can take you up
5:49
here uh not to this specific spot but up to this area not sure what you're
5:55
supposed to do after that it's probably not too far of a walk from there up appear to the
6:01
park but it's hard to imagine um here's some
6:08
cannons off the light it's hard to imagine soldiers assaulting this spot uh
6:16
I mean you can see how steep and rugged this is it's not it's not a gentle slope now they did
6:23
I believe start at the North End and make their Way South although
6:29
the Breakthrough came in the uh Confederate Center uh which was supposed to be
6:35
according to what I read in The Visitor Center just a sort of a diversion um
6:42
they were supposed to the Union forces were supposed to dislodge the first line of defense in the center and uh and then
6:51
hold but they just kept going um and
6:57
uh ended up charging all the way up the
7:03
hill there's a monument some kids playing I won't focus on them but we got
7:08
some nice bright orange colors here as well which I'm
7:14
loving loving that it's not warmer than it is cuz it is
7:28
humid I want to thank our patreon supporters for your support you can find
7:33
a link in the YouTube description below it really does make a difference and may
7:38
not seem like much to you guys but it does seem like a lot to me so thank you very
7:47
much we'll go down here and see this view as well
8:16
hi
8:22
there so the reason um this battle was fought the Confederates were here cuz
8:28
the Union forces had taken Chattanooga and uh the Confederates
8:33
wanted to lay Siege they did so for several months and then um the unions
8:39
were able to break that Siege and uh I
8:45
there and go see what's down here um and
8:51
then attack to drive these folks off as you could see from earlier you know this was not too far away and and I believe
9:00
they could fire all the way into Chattanooga from up here but aside from all that this is
9:07
really beautiful up here really Pleasant and the kids are having a great time but
9:13
otherwise it's peaceful and quiet
9:31
at this Viewpoint
9:37
man yeah and it's a primitive thing so far AI so I'm pretty
9:42
sure in the next 10 years if if your complain is only then I don't it's going to be a of
10:17
there
10:34
I believe there must have been a museum down here I saw some signs I don't think
10:39
that's the case anymore some really cool um rock
10:44
formations
10:51
though reminds me of a bit of the hills overlooking Budapest um where the the castle was you
11:00
know Buddha and PES were two separate cities originally and then came
11:28
one
11:34
[Music] for speech
11:40
foreign speech
12:15
[Music] looks like the museum is open but I'm not going to take you in
12:22
there I am going to duck down this little side quest path over here then it
12:28
looks like we can we can loop back around the other side
12:33
of this Museum so we'll do a little bit of uh backtracking but that's kind of part for
12:40
the course here on this channel often Discovery means having to retrace
12:46
your steps a little bit lots of great interpretive signs with some old
12:52
photography that sort of thing
12:59
interesting to have such a anyway to say loud
13:14
conversation okay so it looks like there's another trail that will take you down to these places Craven's house
13:21
Covenant College skuka spring Sunset Rock believe there's a cave here um on
13:26
the mountain you can see that this is is a precipitous
13:32
descent so unless you got a shuttle car consider whether you are going to want
13:39
to do that or
13:45
not another view in another
13:52
direction there's something about uh being up high like this and getting these views
13:59
it's a little special pretty
14:17
enjoyable pardon the sniffles
15:05
Lookout Valley and Browns fairy I guess Browns fairy was an important river crossing at the
15:17
time let's see what we can see around this side of
15:27
things for
16:06
for
17:01
hi there excuse me no problem
17:09
[Music] thanks wow that leaf blower is
17:27
quiet excuse me so I didn't have a walk out last week
17:34
and I apologize for that as you can tell I was actually down with the
17:41
flu and uh just couldn't managed to do it this week so hopefully this will make
17:48
up for it
18:03
uh I've never really been a civil war history buff but it
18:10
is I've read quite a few books about it less the military stuff and more the
18:20
politics uh but was a pretty decisive inflection point for the
18:28
United States and uh pretty brutal
18:34
stuff as War tends to be I guess despite our romanticization of
18:50
it I believe until the Advent of antibiotics
18:58
and penicillin it was pretty common for more soldiers to die from sickness than
19:10
injury and for those who were injured the that look was bleak
19:31
I should look up our elevation
19:43
here well we're at 2,000 ft here my guess
19:49
is we're about 500 ft above the river
20:16
love these giant I guess it's an oak tree of some
20:26
sort hear some birds singing I don't know if Mike's picking it
20:57
up for
21:45
[Music]
21:52
so let's take a little circuit around and uh
21:59
just this kind of fancy neighborhood we won't go go too far uh but there really are some nice
22:05
homes and as you can imagine the views must be just
22:15
incredible here's a newer one uh but a lot of them seem like they
22:22
have been around for quite a while especially lower where you get the
22:29
big columned porches and porticos and that sort of
22:35
thing but if you're going to park up here the parking app you use is Park
22:41
Mobile pretty simple stuff I love these parking apps it just simplifies things so much
23:27
all right
23:49
I think we're on Brow Street look at this old tutor place kind of neat
24:01
large rolling
24:15
Lawns
24:27
there all the boxwoods around here love
24:40
it rot iron gates look at this Old Stone Wall this place is
24:48
pretty pretty fancy and old looks
24:56
historic beautiful
25:17
love these big porches too big covered porches oh fantastic
25:28
Let's cross over and get a view of the valley
25:51
below go wall of hydranges that have passed the season
26:06
no picnicking private property love it
26:30
I wonder if there was a either a public park here at one time or another house that is no longer some
26:39
interesting Drive infrastructure type stuff or maybe it was a Carriage House sort of
26:46
thing we're going to head back here um oh
26:52
wait this is the vertical the uphill train or what I call it incline railway
26:59
which a lot of people might have called I would have called a finic I believe let's just check it out real
27:05
quick it's really you know 5 minute walk from the park which is Handy much closer
27:13
than I was saying earlier so you may I mentioned Ruby
27:20
Falls I think which is a I believe a cave in a waterfall there's Rock City near here somewhere um
27:28
which is this is closed November 4th through
27:35
15th um looks like judging from the signs inside it's 20 bucks round trip
27:42
for an adult uh so uh we found looks like the one
27:52
window where it's not open but kind of cool to see anyway
28:01
uh the lookout mountain incline railway so
28:41
I often comment on real estate prices as I walk around because I'm curious and I
28:47
think it's indicative of the economy often times and other things it's not always
28:54
positive or negative uh uh seen a couple for sale
29:00
signs I don't know what the prices are like here if you do or you have a comment please let me know in the
29:05
comment section of the YouTube channel also check out the city walks virtual tours.com
29:11
website um you know you can search walks
29:17
by uh location and runtime oh and I started a Facebook
29:24
group uh I queried my Facebook page users if that would be more
29:30
helpful and they said it would be or a couple people did anyway and the reason
29:35
I did that is to make it possible for you guys to
29:43
uh for you guys to contribute walks look at this
29:48
place we saw that earlier it's the wall of hydrange I was talking about in the covered porch just beautiful um anyway
29:55
you can post articles I can post artic articles and you can as well or other
30:01
people who make walking videos or people who find Walking videos they like and want to
30:07
share feel free to join that group it's not a public group in the
30:13
sense that you just click join and you're in uh you have to basically agree to the rules which is
30:20
Relentless positivity and kindness um pretty simple and then I'll
30:28
approve you and you'll be good to go it's quite the
30:39
mansion that's a covered porch right there tell you what
31:09
as you can see there's several signs for Resident parking only uh so you just want to be aware of
31:16
where you're parking uh they also have signs around to a number to call if you get your car
31:23
gets booted uh if you're not familiar with the boot
31:28
it's a big thing they put on your wheel basically that keeps you from
31:34
driving away it's easier for them than Towing I guess look at this
31:41
place
31:56
um that's let's go back this way and see signs towards Ruby
32:03
Falls few other things but this is uh so if you were to once you go past
32:09
the point you loop around this oneway road and you would come out here but one of the things it's going to do is give
32:15
us a view to the West yeah think guess West Northwest
32:31
uh looks like there's some parking spaces over here I suspect you still have to pay
33:11
looks like some spaces are opening up
33:37
just giant homes beautiful giant
33:45
homes pretty
33:52
cool if you're not familiar with United States signing signage these do entner
33:58
signs are just just telling you it's oneway traffic the opposite way it's not saying it's not a private
34:05
property sign or a a no access
34:12
sign it's funny I was reading an article the other day we forget the little things that we just
34:18
take for granted that we know uh read an article about someone who moved
34:24
to it was France and they
34:30
uh had have a real hard time navigating the bureaucracy because they didn't understand the way
34:37
the system worked they hadn't grown up with it it was just different and unusual to them and they didn't know the
34:43
little words and definitions and stuff I'm interpreting a little bit here
34:50
um and so it was very frustrating to them and I can imagine you know I think
34:56
a lot of those European countries have a reputation for having a lot of bureaucracy and having it be difficult
35:02
to navigate but you know I have to wonder if those people came here and
35:10
wanted to build a house how easy it would be for them to navigate the bureaucracy or if they
35:15
wanted to get a driver's license how difficult it would be because they wouldn't
35:21
know even which office to go to you know or what the signage is and some of the
35:27
definitions of the words that are used in the brochure so you know
35:34
it's it's uh it's a trick I not a trick It's Tricky um and then I read another
35:40
article about how these people had moved abroad and how much they
35:47
loved the lack of certain what they called micro uh stressors right
35:55
so the need to drive every everywhere the difficulty of getting around um the
36:03
constant bombardment of marketing that we sort of take for granted here um in the states and uh it's not a judgment
36:12
but uh well they were um but I thought it was an interesting thing to think
36:19
about so we are back at our origin having made a couple different Loops
36:25
here there's a gift shop here the battle of Chattanooga I want to thank you guys for joining me here in or outside of
36:33
Chattanooga today in I haven't decided if it's in Tennessee or Georgia we're
36:39
right on the line here so right near the line anyway thanks a lot I'm going to try and get another walk or two in while
36:46
I'm here in Chattanooga and I hope you will join me for those I hope you enjoyed this one we
36:51
will see you again soon until then keep on stepping for
