We're walking a new trail today for our videos for treadmill and the cold crisp day makes for some spectacular views of the mountains. Making these nature virtual walks for treadmill makes my day. I love getting out and sharing these snow capped peaks with you. It's good for me and I hope for you as well.

hello Walkers and welcome back to City walks I'm uh doing a new walk today and
0:07
I'm going to tell you about that in just a minute but first I want to tell you why um we were actually up here the day
0:14
after American Thanksgiving and we came up and had some friend uh met some friends and we had a
0:21
came up to get Christmas trees and uh had a nice fire and I was looking at
0:26
this mountain and it was soow it was cloudy and snow and that the snow was in
0:32
the rocks and it was just astounding and I had forgotten what a good view this is
0:37
up here and I decided I wanted to come back here and share it with you because also my wife traveling Mill um did a
0:46
little Loop walk that I was uh I had forgotten about was in existence um we
0:53
are up well we're up the Pine Creek drainage and I've hiked the Pine Creek
0:59
Falls Trail a couple times I'm going to flip you around here uh that's not how I do that I'm going to do it this
1:05
way okay my name is Henry I'll be your proxy Walker today your virtual travel
1:10
guide and your co-discoverer I'm going to flip you around again here in a second um and on
1:19
City walks I take you on these little walks sometimes in cities mostly in cities sometimes on nature trails and uh
1:29
that's what we're going to do today today uh and I give you a little chitchat along the way on nature trails
1:34
I try and talk a little less it does take some effort um this is actually we
1:40
are starting out at the George Lake Trail head as you can see from the signage um it is a last day of hunting
1:47
season and I'm not wearing the brightest of colors today so I feel a little foolish but we're going to make some
1:53
noise and let people know that we're walking and not antler to animals um I
2:00
am wearing a blue hat of course it is 23° this morning Fahrenheit I think it's
2:06
-5 Celsius it's about 10:30 in the morning very last days of
2:14
November and I'm going to tell you a little bit about this and then we'll let the oh look at this and then we'll just
2:22
let the nature speak for itself I think
2:27
um am going to be breathing a little heavy as we make up our way up this incline so here in the US especially in
2:35
the west uh public lands you can um get a permit special permit to
2:42
get a Christmas tree I think for us it was to get it
2:48
online was $5 for the permit and 250 for the processing
2:54
fee so um very very affordable
3:00
um that said you cannot there are some rules you can't cut you can't leave
3:06
above a 6in stump you can only take a tree from 1 to 12T
3:11
tall and you can only take a tree I think it's 50 ft or something
3:19
like that away from the trail away from roads and campgrounds
3:25
and that sort of thing um and that's about
3:31
it you have to display your you're supposed to display your permit on the dashboard which is kind of a hassle if
3:38
you don't have a
3:43
printer all right so George Lake is a prettyy steep Trail up to an Alpine Lake
3:49
that I've never actually been to look at the light
3:54
um but people ride their bikes up there cuz unlike the Pine
4:01
Creek Trail uh I think the Pine Creek goes into the Wilderness Area and George
4:08
Lake does
4:19
not I love the contrast
4:24
of the light and the snow
4:30
and the brown of the of the shrubs here and the green of the trees it's just lovely
4:59
got to put my gloves on and now I got to do that with my teeth so pardon
5:13
me here we
5:18
go you can see the frost down here still have a we had
5:24
a dusting of snow on Friday when we were out here and uh
5:31
this little Valley here doesn't see a whole lot of sunshine throughout the day and
5:38
winter and so uh the snow sticks around pretty well look at this little
5:44
Ravine down in here it's pretty
5:49
steep is
5:57
it we're getting some use back in here I'm going to try and adress
6:03
that I've got a little polarizer adapter on here now pretty excited
6:13
about I also am carrying some bear
6:18
spray just in case I run into a
6:24
bear another good reason to make a little bit of noise you
6:30
noise just so you don't surprise them they don't want anything to do with us for the most part
6:37
but sometimes we inadvertently get in their space and
6:44
they don't like it I don't really either to be honest with you I want to be in a
6:49
bare space something's clicking
7:08
somebody with a dog or is that a deer that's a deer tail
7:16
waging up
7:22
ahead little I believe a white tail deer
7:38
that's what that is I've got all these zipper pools on this jacket sorry
7:43
about the angle
7:48
there and the mic is so sensitive that it picks up the the tapping of that or
7:54
the tapping of the headphone wires against another wire
8:01
look at this so they had a fire up here a few years quite a few years ago
8:09
it's a lot of the Dead Timber got burnt out
8:43
then a lot of it has fallen over the years that's a real
8:50
thing to be aware of when you are in the woods wind blown Deadfall
9:04
maybe it wasn't no white tail maybe it was a maybe it was a dog here are some kids up
9:17
ahead somebody's having a good time lights's coming out hit that
9:24
mountain side
9:32
now this is what I should have on as some blaze
9:38
orange like some clearing out
9:50
here yeah here we go little sign
9:55
caution tree filling and Equipment operation
10:01
sorry about the spin there and here move
10:12
forward hi there how are you that's all
10:18
right no worries you guys out having a good day
10:24
good pleas take care
10:32
well that child's having a good time love
10:46
it looks like they come in and maybe doesn't look like they took it for
10:52
wood but maybe they did um probably just did some cleanup to
10:59
avoid or to reduce the fire risk all this Deadfall is
11:06
fuel of course
11:51
I want to give a quick shout out to photo Luke Hawaii um he's does another walking channel
12:01
from Hawaii as you might have guess anyway he sent me a comment the other day it
12:08
really really made me feel good he was complimenting the walks we do here and
12:14
I uh I get busy making the walks doing other things and I forget sometimes
12:20
to I get off of YouTube watching stuff but I went back and watched a couple of his and one of which is from Diamond
12:27
Head and it is stunning just beautiful beautiful so highly recommend you check
12:33
out that and then uh I also want to thank our patreon
12:39
supporters I tried to do that at the beginning but uh all the all the specialist quote unquote say
12:46
you shouldn't uh do all that stuff at the beginning so but thank you guys really
12:52
appreciate your support you can of course of course find links to how to become
12:59
a patreon supporter down in the description but certainly not
13:07
required appreciate it though oh and if you want to do it one time there's Kofi or coffee and then
13:17
uh hope I'm going the right direction here here we go um and then uh
13:24
PayPal this is the split
13:30
I don't want to go all the way up to George
13:38
Lake which I think is what happens if you make a right turn
13:44
here oh it's only well the trail head is half mile that way behind
13:52
us uh Pine Creek Trail that's where we want to go make our way over to
14:00
number 47 look at the light streaming down
14:05
hitting the mountains
14:13
now you can find other walks by walk time so the amount of the length of the
14:20
walk and uh location on the website CityWalk virtual tours.com
14:33
oh look at that oh man isn't that
14:40
beautiful I love getting to share this with you guys
15:04
oh look how beautiful that is I wonder what this button does
15:10
Boop yeah I don't know probably not the best time to figure that
15:18
out what do we got here now someone asked uh a couple weeks
15:26
ago about whether I wear Yak truck track s and the reason that comes to mind at
15:32
the moment is because this is the trail which is actually kind of fine but
15:38
couple more weeks another snow and uh it could be a little sketch
15:46
um but so yak tracks the answer is yes I do when I remember them um or think to
15:52
bring them and yak tracks are these sort of uh rubberized they're these rubber
15:58
nety things that have metal coils on them on the tread you put them over the
16:04
bottom of your shoe and they give you traction you can get other versions with spikes or cleats um but they basically
16:13
like snow tires for your shoes and they they work pretty well and can make the difference
16:20
between uh a good hike and a stressful hike
17:05
so with the battery on my DJI wireless
17:11
receiver is about to go now I've this time I have uh remembered to record on
17:18
the actual microphone the wireless uh mic that it has that ability
17:25
which is pretty cool uh so hopefully when that goes I'm going to unplug the
17:32
receiver and hopefully the uh mic will continue to
17:37
record adequately if not we will have the uh the phone microphone it's not windy
17:45
so that should be okay got all this down timber
19:25
look at the Lykan and the the snow though beautiful
19:33
colors love it
20:43
it's kind of a steep little slope here isn't it
21:12
there's not a lot of sounds in the forest this morning which is interesting I can start to hear the Rushing Water of
21:19
Pine Creek ahead and heard some birds earlier but
21:24
it's pretty still it's nice
22:49
so I like to talk about the plant sometimes too and I think we're into a
22:54
lot of I don't know what these deciduous are but we're into do a lot of Doug fur
22:59
in here and a little bit of spruce maybe I think that's what we're seeing
23:05
maybe some Lodge pole you can see some different bark on
23:13
different trees it's one way to tell almost look like
23:20
some Hemlock but that's not what that is um not these trees but in the background
23:26
here with the really thin needles
23:32
there I'm not as good of plant identification as I probably should be
23:37
to be trying to identify plants on a YouTube
23:43
channel I want to thank you guys for your feedback that you've been giving me uh upon
23:49
request um I do read your comments I do try to com comment back to everybody um
23:55
it's one of the best parts of doing these things surprisingly to me um it's fun to hear
24:05
your personal memories your personal thoughts or personal stories uh okay hold on here I'm going
24:13
to take a break because my mic went out and we are back I do have to put my
24:19
glove back on um hopefully this is all recording the way it's supposed to if
24:25
not little shimy in the if not well hopefully the phone's
24:32
recording um a little shimmy in the balance
24:38
there oh that's why so it needs to
24:45
go it should be better there we go uh when I took the receiver off it
24:52
changed the balance of the camera on this uh DJI I think it's a osmo 5 mobile
25:00
gimbal uh it's a handy dandy little deal it's a generation or so back the six is
25:07
pretty cool too cuz it has a extendable selfie stick
25:13
deal um but I've given that to my wife to use and I'm using the five
25:31
was I saying something oh yeah about your comments um I love getting the comments hearing your
25:36
stories and Corrections um those are actually appreciated when they're put
25:43
kindly kindly intended um I have had a couple folks comment
25:50
recently telling me that I should do things differently which came across less than
25:57
kind and more entitled um but you know what it's it's fine I typically when I
26:03
get those I just recommend other channels they might like um not worth the effort
26:11
to uh get riled up about it and honestly
26:16
they're so shockingly rare that it's um it's a nice reminder
26:23
of how wonderful the viewers of this channel are in terms of
26:29
positivity and appreciation and you know Spirit of community so I really value
26:35
that too all right we are coming back we're about to join up with the oh look at
26:41
that with the Pine Creek Trail oh look at that light can almost feel the warmth over
26:54
there we're going to keep loop we're going to make a big loop I don't know if I said said that I don't think I did so
27:00
we're not going up to the falls we're actually going to go uh back to where we started but we're
27:07
going to go a different way as as the term Loop would imply I
27:16
guess pardon my sniffles look at that
27:28
okay I just want to point one thing out like this would be a this is kind of the tree type of tree you would get you
27:34
wouldn't be able to cut this cuz it's next to the trail and it's you know it's pretty small but it's we call them
27:40
Charlie Brown Christmas trees because the special from the 1960s or
27:47
70s they're pretty sparse they're not like a farmed Christmas tree which are
27:54
typically uh you know they've been tended to and and encourag to have lots
28:00
of branches and that sort of thing and I think that's why you pay the extra money uh which is great
28:07
um but we like our little little sparse
28:14
ones uh Senator Penelope fluffy pants check her out on Instagram at senator.
28:21
Penelope uh is our new kitten and we actually are not going to
28:26
decorate our tree this year because she is an agent of chaos and we
28:32
love her dearly but um she's spent about 30 minutes this morning basically just
28:40
attacking our Christmas tree which is kind of what we expected fun to
28:45
watch but probably not worth putting on all the ornaments and that sort of
28:55
thing so we just went I'm sorry we went uh the trail
29:01
Junction right there go up there you hit Pine Creek Falls if you keep going you
29:06
get another four miles or so past the Falls you will get to Pine Creek Lake
29:13
it's pretty steep Trail sorry about the swerving and woring there I try to give you a heads up before I do that but I
29:25
didn't so where we end up in in a few minutes here as we'll go down to the parking lot and we will walk back
29:32
through the campground area and then a little bit of Road and then we'll head up the um path
29:40
to the the the parking lot where we started and that should be about 15 or 20
29:47
minutes more I'm guessing maybe more we'll see that's part of the
29:56
fun one of the first first walks I did up Pine Creek along this Trail this
30:01
there's a lot of the stuff that had not been cleared out all this deadall
30:07
and uh it was all good it was fine except for I was crossing you had to go off the trail and around an obstacle and
30:14
I was stepping on logs and whoop feet went right out from under me um quite a
30:22
quite a spill I wasn't hurt or anything just just my ego um I don't think I'm not sure if I
30:29
kept that in or not but anyway the trials and
30:43
travails you can see right these ones without branches or anything on them are
30:51
dead and you can imagine the wind gets going and looks like one one over here
30:58
that tilty one is just barely being held up by some branches of its neighbor here
31:05
we go so the wind gets going and that could tumble down and as you can see
31:11
from what's been cut to clear the trail a lot of that stuff has already blown over the
31:19
trail so be aware
31:36
the hike to the falls is an extremely popular hike in the area and you'll see
31:42
from the parking lot that there's not a ton of parking it's pretty good parking lot for trail head National Forest Trail head but around here anyway
31:49
um but it can get really busy so highly recommend in the Summers coming in the
31:55
morning or in the evening
32:06
also I meant to mention I don't know if I did or not I am carrying bear spray because even though it's cold and
32:14
winter the Bears aren't necessarily in their dens right now it's not a matter of temperature or even light it's a
32:21
matter of food availability from what I understand and uh in hunting season
32:26
there's a lot of I'm going to be a little graphic here uh a lot of carcasses and gut piles and that sort of
32:33
thing around that can give them some extra calories for the winter so
32:38
wouldn't surprise me at all if there were some wandering
32:44
about and it's best to be prepared love love
32:53
love this view look at that mountain back there I don't even know what that one's called
32:59
called I don't know what any of these are called looks like it's still a popular hike
33:07
here even in winter
33:32
somebody's got their pups decided for a
33:46
run you can see kind of the the map here and uh info about that stuff um see
33:56
some what's available for parking there's another little section across the way it'll take six or seven cars I'm
34:04
going spin you keep spinning you here and then there's this section here which has
34:10
plenty pretty much room so it's not it's not small but um in the summer it gets
34:17
busy and uh it can fill up we'll keep going along
34:25
here because I want to go do I want to do
34:33
that yeah we'll go to Pine Creek I'm go over to the creek
34:40
here this is that other little parking station so may be more than seven
35:03
somebody's excited to go okay here's this there's an informal
35:10
path back
35:26
here for
36:12
that ice
36:47
it's down right Pleasant pardon me
37:47
we're just following this Trail along the creek I'm not sure exactly where it goes but I
37:54
believe at one point H it will lead back to the road or a
38:01
dayuse
38:26
area I just want to go back here real quick cuz I see
38:32
something is probably just
38:37
Moss but I want to check it
38:43
out oh yeah
38:49
okay a chunk up there had the vague shape of an
38:55
owl oh well got to check these things out if you're going to be a co-discoverer
39:06
right I think normally I would just take this Trail and see where it ends up
39:12
but I think it's going to end up at a church
39:19
camp down there and I don't want to go to the church camp as cool as it is
39:41
unbelievably Pleasant in
39:54
here we going to take this other little Trail and see where it
40:21
goes sorry for the noise
40:29
just Loops us back to our other little informal Trail so maybe we should have gone on that other one any well this is
40:37
good
41:19
so I think what that thing leads back to that other Trail would be down this way which is I believe the
41:28
day use area uh and there's a pit toilet and fire rings and tables down there little
41:35
extra bit of parking that fills up in the summer and not too far along we have
41:42
parking down here so now that I'm looking at there's plenty of parking but
41:48
you could I've seen it full completely full so just be aware
41:57
and this is actually a really cool place to come Camp as well um this
42:04
Campground you can see it's kind of in this Valley in this Canyon at the head of it and lots of trees and lots of
42:13
shade uh The Creeks right there there's a I think there's another little nature path you can
42:19
take um so and there's some more pit toilets and stuff down here at the actual camping area which we'll see in a
42:26
little bit bit that's a spruce isn't
42:34
it I think it
42:39
is those are
42:48
not I'm also going to show you this Pavilion up here on the right
43:00
little uh I don't know if that's a utility path or a cut
43:05
through or what looks like a four-wheeler track ATV
43:11
track um I believe these roads up here are non-motorized these Trails sorry
43:33
uh the reason I want to show you this Pavilion is it's pretty cool architecturally
43:38
um and you can rent it uh or reserve it I think there's probably a fee
43:43
associated with it from the forest service um and it's got some remnants I believe
43:50
I believe these are remnants of an older Pavilion and then they've uh the
43:56
architecture students from MSU which has a pretty good architecture program from what I understand uh built this sort of
44:02
uh structure over here and built up uh this stuff I mean this is probably 15
44:09
years ago see that bench has seen a little bit of abuse but it's got a
44:15
picnic table it's got a fire pit it's got a grill it's got several picnic tables all kind of a modernist design
44:23
which I like I'm going to give you another uh View VI along
44:30
here it's kind of cut that can't delevered asymmetrical roof
44:37
design well it's it's artistic it's cool it's not something you normally see in a national forest or government entity
44:46
public lands entity I should phrase that differently um cuz these are public
44:54
lands they belong to all of us ooh uh rehash of one of my perambulation
45:02
pontifications um public lands belong to every citizen of the United States US
45:10
public lands I should specify um we hold them together and they are managed by
45:17
government agencies for the public in not just Recreation but also
45:25
for financial reasons for instance Mining and Timber operations But
45:30
ultimately for the public good and I think that is fantastic and
45:35
we have a ton of it around where we live and it really does add to Quality of
45:42
Life ability to recreate um and uh get outside in nature huge
45:51
huge benefit and I'm going to show you something kind of cool here
45:57
a little Nest somebody built in previous years raised
46:04
a family of course this would all be sheltered by leaves in the summer and spring so little safe spot probably
46:12
hopefully they were hoping oh my gosh you guys look at the
46:18
light oh so nice I'm going to adjust the uh polarizer here see if I can
46:28
maybe I don't know I can't really tell if it's making a difference or
46:34
not and this is kind of off to the right here uh you got some campsites uh
46:40
there's a pit toilet back in there and of course we got a pit toilet by the
46:47
road here and some more campsites off to the left oh my gosh you guys
46:55
seriously I can't can't
47:01
even oh love it oh that's interesting there's
47:07
a satellite dish over there I think that must be where the maybe where the host
47:12
stays somewhere around here Campground host and uh maybe
47:18
they maybe it's a weather station right you can see some uh
47:27
looks like 27 campsites up here closed for the
47:36
season so looking this way we is heading east pretty much and uh very vaguely and
47:46
uh it goes down into Paradise Valley
48:12
look at this view guys oh this is this is why you come
48:18
visit Montana am I right walks like
48:25
this and there's a ton of of them I will say that and I I don't know
48:32
if I said this before there's a big difference between visiting a place and living in a place one I've spoken
48:39
numerous times about the cost of housing out here it's a significant issue in
48:45
terms of especially over Boseman and Missoula where people just can't afford to live um and they're living in RVs on
48:54
the streets if they're Lu uh and you know it's just ridiculous
49:00
second of all is the weather it's nice to come out here and experience this for a week uh it is a
49:06
whole different ball game when you are in month six of snowstorms and 30 mph
49:14
winds and clouds and darkness and all that stuff so you definitely need to
49:22
consider that um cuz you're going to get it if
49:27
you move out here you hear that oh come on Mr
49:39
squirrel anyway there was an angry squirrel cheering at us at
49:51
me uh you can see this road section of the road is paved and it is paved
49:57
I think all the way back down to East River Road um that said it also gets
50:03
covered in snow in the winter and people do come up to ice climb on the Falls um but it can
50:11
be a tricky Wicket to get back in
50:20
here came up one time and there was a big tree across the
50:25
road had to back up quite a ways in the
50:34
snow so I mentioned a church camp and uh I don't know exactly where it starts
50:40
probably just past this gate up here on the road down in there is uh I think
50:47
it's a Methodist Church has a camp been there forever not forever but for
50:53
decades and decades and decades and one year they had a blue Grass Festival in
50:58
there and it was fantastic it was just the perfect venue unfortunately I think
51:05
the festival lost a significant amount of money and they never did it again but man was it
51:11
cool it was a fun
51:18
day yeah luck Park Church camp
51:27
um so we're going to keep on going up here to the uh road that goes up to the parking
51:33
lot we'll go up to the parking lot and get some more of those epic views with looks like some brighter light than we
51:41
had earlier so we'll check that out as
51:48
well look at all these little little pine trees trying to make a go of it
52:00
I guess these are willow trees I don't think
52:05
they're I don't think they're Aspen pretty sure they're not that one
52:11
might
52:19
be and you got this big guy over here big gal
52:29
there's something fun about seeing these big
52:35
mature beasts of trees even though I know out in the Pacific Northwest they
52:40
these would be tiny compared to some of the big Spruce out there and the Redwoods and the hemlocks they have but
52:47
it's fun to see the the granddaddies grandmas
52:56
um so I'm going to give you an idea of what this little section is like and if it's if we've had snow if we
53:03
had had snow this can get super icy and it's kind of a lose course down
53:10
to the paved section and then you've got all these bumps and rivets that's not
53:16
the right word divots oh my gosh look at this View
53:32
this is a Sunday last night we went up in Livingston they had the light up
53:38
Livingston thing where Santa comes in and they have carols and hot cocoa and
53:44
uh raffle and uh crafts and stuff and they
53:50
light up all the lights in one of the parks it's pretty cool I I
53:57
think hopefully I'll do it today I took some footage and I'll make a little
54:04
Instagram reel or something oh my gosh you
54:11
guys just beautiful just Epic
55:09
there's a mag pie flying
55:16
across oh my
55:24
gosh even this grass contrasting with the snow is nice get a little Sparkle
55:30
off the frost
56:03
so I mentioned a fire um I mean we had a fire up here a couple of them actually
56:10
and we brought these solo stoves cuz we just love the lack of
56:16
smoke and uh
56:22
so it doesn't leave a mark um there is a mark of somebody's fire but
56:28
not ours over there yeah our's over here and uh doesn't leave a mark doesn't
56:35
leave a bunch of charred Ash or anything and it doesn't have much smoke so they're really
56:42
nice and while I wish I was sponsored by them I am not look at that guys I want
56:47
to thank you guys for coming out with me on this walk oh so beautiful this is a
56:53
recommendation of traveling mail uh I think I mentioned that at the beginning so thanks to her too good
57:01
choice all right we will see you guys again soon not sure from whence we will be filming or walking but until then as
57:08
always keep on stepping
