0:01
hello Walkers and welcome back to City walks the channel where I walk you
0:07
around places that are hopefully kind of interesting and
0:12
I well I share discoveries we make together um I'm going to flip you around
0:18
so hold on to your seats there real quick hi my name is Henry I will be your
0:23
proxy Walker today your virtual travel guide and co-discoverer here in Chattanooga
0:30
Tennessee let me get some light on my face here there we go it is a beautiful
0:35
day here in Chattanooga along Tennessee River and I'm going to flip you around again hold
0:41
on all right uh as I said we're along the Tennessee River here that flows
0:47
through Chattanooga I am back uh after about 18 months I filmed a couple walks
0:52
here last year last summer and it was much hotter much more humid uh well I
1:00
don't know about more humid but it's definitely warmer and but I had a great time it's a beautiful city um it's got a
1:05
really neat downtown and an aquarium over here that kind of anchors this
1:11
area uh and we're going to get back up into there in a little bit
1:16
um but first we're probably going to walk over to this cool pedestrian bridge where I think I might have started a
1:21
walk last year but I want to revisit that uh and we are going to walk over
1:28
here give you a little bit better uh view of of the river ever since uh the Civil War and
1:35
before Chattanooga has been a hub for Transportation uh the river here they've
1:42
had roads and Railways and consequently a lot of manufacturing and that sort of
1:47
thing historically and it was a at the meeting place uh between the what is it
1:53
the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland plateau uh this kind of a neat Jojo
2:02
sbsn I don't know what that is but it's a Ross landing and actually let's walk down here cuz it's a cool way to get
2:10
back up there and there's uh not sure if that's part of the aquarium but that is
2:17
and you can see a guy on an ebike here on a nice little network of bike paths
2:22
as well let's uh make our way down here it
2:27
is about 70ยฐ Fahrenheit which I think is 21ยฐ C according to my app beautiful day
2:35
here in November about 11:45 in the morning uh it is extremely Pleasant look
2:43
at this cool mural I guess um native
2:50
peoples from the area and it's I think I I assumed that it would have been
2:56
primarily the Cherokee here but according to Wikipedia the Cherokee didn't arrive to this area until about
3:03
1776 when one of the leaders broke away from the main population or nation
3:11
and uh brought his folks here I'm going to
3:16
peek around this corner cuz I don't remember exactly coming down this far it was at the time last summer they have a
3:24
kind of a splash park system behind me right now and um
3:30
it was really cool teaming with kids at the time this looks like it's just a a boat dock which is kind of nice and I
3:38
think that's an island down there um excuse me we'll go back up this way and
3:44
you can see why it would be fun what looked like steps on the right I
3:52
believe or maybe it's just in the middle but there was a bunch of water sort of cascading down here we'll get a better
3:57
look up here and you can see places to sit hang out and of course get some
4:03
shade right now this looks like
4:09
it's thought maybe it was closed off uh this all would have
4:14
water um right now it is about the perfect temperature honestly it gets a
4:20
little warmer in the Sun and uh yeah I think the water flows all down
4:27
these steps which is super fun um um and pretty cool so we'll go up
4:35
here and find our way around thank you to our patreon supporters uh yall's contributions
4:43
through patreon also Kofi or coffee I guess and uh
4:49
PayPal is very much appreciated um you can find links in the YouTube
4:54
description below if you're watching if you're watching this on
5:00
uh City walks virtual tours.com
5:05
um I don't think we I don't have comments turned on on that because of spam
5:11
but you can find other walks on that site so
5:35
one of the things I like to do here on this channel is remind people that I do talk a lot
5:41
so uh if you're looking for one of the quiet walks you um there are plenty of those
5:46
over on out on YouTube and totally understand that I'm going to rush to get
5:52
across here but uh it's just not that kind of
5:59
Channel and I like to talk so little hustle there some kind of
6:07
cool outdoor sculptures oh yeah there's another one at the bridge this is not the foot
6:13
bridge but I want to take a peek out
6:19
here it looks like this other brick building is part of the Tennessee
6:25
Aquarium will eventually end up in front of that so neat bronzes here in front of
6:39
bridge 2009 kind of a neat old school
6:45
Bridge with the art deco lights and blue Iron Work
7:10
so last year I walked in this area I walked in
7:16
the Southside neighborhood and uh can't remember if I
7:22
walked further up or not feel like I did I can't remember it's one of it was part
7:28
of one of those other walks
7:34
if you've watched this channel before and seen some of the other places where we've had or gotten to enjoy public art like
7:43
this is pretty cool um you'll know that I I'm a big
7:49
fan I think it just adds a lot of character and enjoyment even if
7:55
you see it every single day the same stuff
8:15
there and I think this is primarily residences over here it's pretty new um seems to be a
8:24
booming place you know especially over on the south side with new
8:31
apartments and condos going in restaurants uh Innovative
8:45
stuff I love the smell of the boxwoods as
8:54
well I guess it looks like they have a bike sharing program which is kind of
9:08
nice today is Monday and I believe it's Veterans Day so as I
9:15
film so I want to give a shout out to the veterans out there who
9:20
have uh put themselves at the service of their
9:27
communities and Country thank
9:40
you and what we'll do is just walk out here ways I think and uh then we'll
9:47
backtrack a little bit and see the rest of well not the rest of the city
9:54
but more of the city this is I think the Hunter Museum which is an art museum
9:59
pretty cool design and architecture I think in my
10:14
opinion this Serpentine stairwell that'll get you huffing and
10:39
there's the bridge we looked up briefly earlier and the dock that we
10:51
on I really like the Iron Iron Work iron work on these old
11:34
see the island over there I don't know if that's a park or privately owned or what the story is on that I think and
11:40
look at this Cliff you can see why that's a pretty cool location for a museum
12:12
all right I don't want to spend too much time on the bridge but I did want to take a look at over here looks like it's a
12:17
drawbridge it's kind of a old old
12:23
style uh command house or operator's house over there probably
12:29
not be lived in but where there's all the mechanisms for doing that I don't know I like that old school
12:37
design I think it's an old bridge as well I'm not sure exactly if you know let me know in the comments I I do love
12:43
interacting with you guys uh I love hearing about your connections your memories your
12:49
Corrections sometimes um and all that fun
12:54
stuff makes uh makes me feel like there are real people on the other side of this
13:00
camera and hopefully you're going to enjoy these walks
13:06
um so that direction and I'm not entirely
13:12
sure if that's upstream or Downstream to be honest with you um
13:19
is Lookout Mountain and there was a battle there and to
13:25
the North or the South I'm a little bit turned around right now
13:31
so um uh anyway Civil War battle and they
13:38
have a little Park up there I walked around the park in the neighborhood and learned some stuff and
13:44
got some fantastic views looking back at the city
14:15
you know I think I don't think we walked over there last year so I'm just going to walk over to the museum and uh get a closer look at the
14:23
buildings and stuff over there and then we'll go back towards the
14:31
aquarium I think oh the Edwin Hotel interesting um
14:36
Tennessee I mean Chattanooga does have a minor league baseball team here which is
14:48
and uh my son went to a game last year and he was visiting some friends he we
14:55
we're not really a sports fan family but so I was curious to see what he thought
15:00
would be uh if it was fun or not and baseball by nature is kind of a slower
15:07
game um and I think he
15:12
enjoyed having had the experience but I don't think he's going to be a convert
15:30
I have not been inside this Museum and I think next time I come I'll
15:35
have to make some time to do that
16:02
kind of neat this fancy
16:20
place my assumption is this is primarily Modern Art
16:31
this a baseball Motif
16:54
art all righty all right let's head back to the aquarium
17:00
again a little bit of backtracking
17:21
here sorry I'm trying to take a photo as well as
17:39
there some cool stuff here I think it would definitely be
17:44
worth taking some time to explore and enjoy it learn a little bit
17:52
about it see what it has on offer I kind of
17:58
like this bridge too too
18:13
honestly you know it's it's a nice it's an interesting contrast the iron work over there versus the metal work over
18:33
there's a little ice cream shop here on the corner that I might have to check out
18:52
later those steps look like concrete but they're metal
19:19
fancy I was wondering the other day what makes fall so appealing to
19:27
me seems like like you would it would you know being the signature or the sign of
19:35
coming winter you would think it would be ominous but with all the colors and the
19:42
change I think maybe is brings a level of a little bit of excitement A Little Bit Of A Thrill at least for
19:53
me do you guys like fall I like fall winter I like
20:00
summer here's a nice view of kind of some downtown buildings I think that's Lookout Mountain down back there so
20:08
we're at the top of that looking back towards the city exploring
20:13
Etc and you get a lot more of the older taller buildings if you kind of go keep going
20:20
down this way and to the left you know sort of that um I think this is Market
20:26
Street up here it leads back in there
20:34
here's another thing I like so these look like new homes but they've got that
20:40
old classic uh look to them you know they've I'm
20:48
sure they're new and modern inside but they they've made an effort to blend in
20:55
with the classic local or yeah local architecture here and I'm I'm
21:02
a fan of some cool modern stuff too but I you know not everything has to be modern not
21:09
everything has to be old and classic I think I appreciate it when it's some
21:17
efforts been put in to do more than just be the cheapest possible option
21:50
I think last summer when I was here it was a uh big Market Day down here and it
21:56
was really crowded today even though it's a holiday there's schools in session people are
22:04
working it's much quieter there's the entrance to the
22:12
aquarium here or an entrance I guess
22:33
bunch of stuff has been taped off over here they doing some
22:40
work oh yeah so all this little faux Creek had water in it and it flows down
22:47
to those steps where we were earlier and kind of a neat
22:52
little um design feature you know especially given that
22:59
it's here at the Tennessee
23:06
Aquarium I like how they've done the cement too so it looks like it's sort of collapsed like maybe nature taking back
23:13
a little bit there was a fountain in here
23:35
there are a lot of parking lots downtown and on street parking and they all seem to use a parking
23:42
app uh Park Mobile although that one looks like it might be a different app so maybe it's a
23:48
private de and you can just kind of see the lights of the baseball
23:53
stadium between those buildings there
23:59
um there's a Courtyard by Marriott several hotels I pointed out that other
24:05
one there's a Windom further up this direction maybe a Weston I'm not sure uh
24:12
so lots of options let's go this way and then of
24:19
course uh a ton of bars and restaurants if I didn't say that already
24:34
this is Broad Street um again it kind of goes up and into that
25:02
little bit more chain type restaurants down here I see have Ben and Jerry's over there but also a good mix of what
25:10
appeared to be anyway local restaurants
25:15
morning and some um looks like we're going to get into
25:21
some what do you call those things murals that's what I'm looking for and
25:27
then some old signs we have these around our Livingston area they call them ghost signs because most of the businesses are
25:34
no longer intact but they leave the signs on the brick wall that have been painted on there which is kind of a neat
25:41
historical flavor to it believe this over here is a big
25:47
giant uh well there's a climbing wall but also maybe a parking garage
26:18
guess I'm happy to see so many people out on their bikes even in the middle of the day here uh not just commuting but
26:26
getting around and enjoying the fresh air and outside I've been noticing
26:34
myself how nice it is to get out of the office and be just out in the fresh air
26:40
and it's not just the air but um like the insulation those psycholog
26:46
for me the psychological insulation of being out of reality not being present
26:52
you know even in the car or at home not just the office it's easy to forget that
26:58
the outside world is uh still there in a real
27:04
place with real things going on uh I read a
27:10
book by a guy named eert tol it's pretty famous called The Power of
27:16
Now and one of the things he says in this sort of a
27:21
philosophy self-improvement type book is that I think it's something like
27:27
you know the past is fixed it's immutable and the future is really just
27:33
imaginary CU it hasn't happened yet we try to all our worries and stresses
27:38
about trying to predict what will happen our our imagination at work so
27:45
sometimes just focusing on what's real right now in the moment to Hampton in
27:51
the Suites um can be really psychologically beneficial
28:03
all right I'm not going to go too far down here I'm going to circle
28:11
around so last year on the I was walked up the other side of this little Street here by that yellow building and a woman
28:19
who I suspect might have had some mental health issues approached me and said don't fil
28:25
me don't fil me don't fil me so I totally respect that right I don't I try
28:31
not to invade people's privacy there's a certain
28:37
element of uh when you're in a public space there's no real expectation of
28:43
privacy um however you know I also
28:49
believe in hold on let's this
29:00
I believe in Relentless positivity and kindness and
29:06
uh so it's a long way of saying I I blurred her out cuz I'd already edited
29:13
it and posted it look at this stonework I love this I think I pointed this out last time it's an allergy clinic now
29:19
but really neat um so that's a long concluded way of me
29:27
saying if you ever see yourself in one of these and you don't want to be in it just shoot me an email or shoot me a
29:33
comment and I will and with the time code of as closely as you can of who you
29:39
are and that you don't want to be in it and I will do whatever I can to make
29:45
sure you are not that you are not reg recognizable there
29:51
um yeah so our our attachment thing's all messed up so um
30:15
I grew up in let's go back this way we'll do a
30:20
little figure eight loop I grew up in Wilmington North Carolina and so I grew up with Southern
30:27
accent and um people speaking a certain
30:32
way and um it's kind of and I've been away
30:38
from there for a long time and it's uh it's fun for me to hear that southern
30:45
draw I think the media and entertainment for a long
30:50
time equated that accent with lack of intelligence sometimes and
30:59
I I find that interesting as well um because they that seems to be a
31:08
universal um human trait you know there's certain
31:14
people are don't have all anyway I'm not getting that but you know it's not a
31:20
southern thing is what I'm saying
31:28
I'm just waiting for the crosswalk
31:35
light [Music] although just going AC cross
31:46
CU and what I'm going to do is I'm going to take us over and get a better look at
31:52
the baseball stadium just from Below
31:58
um even today Chattanooga is a still Nexus in a hub of Transportation there's
32:04
two highways I think 75 and 24 interstates a lot you know railroads
32:11
come through here and in fact it's probably if people know of Chattanooga
32:18
from outside of the region it's often because of the song Chattanooga chuch Chu and they have converted that station
32:26
to an entertainment district and bunch of restaurants and bars and
32:40
stuff I should be calling out these streets more we're on West Third and this um Left Right street is Chestnut
32:49
Street sorry about that
33:01
it is quiet down here today so much different than last summer
33:06
but again I was it was a weekend and summer
34:03
field uh I I I've been to I used to play baseball as a kid and I do used to enjoy
34:10
going to the Cincinnati Reds games when I lived in Cincinnati um even just by myself you go
34:15
used to be able to go down and get tickets um last
34:21
minute and you know you go down you spend a couple hours even if you don't stay for the whole game and you have a
34:28
good time it's a good way to spend some to relax and have a little bit of excitement from time to
34:34
time uh but in a lot of ways I think the minor league teams they have to work
34:41
a little harder um to keep people entertained and
34:47
generate excitement and so it's can be a lot of fun and it's just more intimate as well
34:53
you're just closer right and you know these guys are making barely minimum wage if
35:01
that and they're just in it for the passion you know a lot of Hope and
35:07
Dreams out there on the field it's just fun
35:34
this is Aquarium Way and we're walking down Power Alley I
35:59
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Rocky Mountains that's out
36:05
west they're trying to trick
36:13
me not good that they have an exterminator outside
36:23
though again here's the aquarium and we're back down at the river and we're
36:29
going to walk down here a little bit to see that again uh I think I read that across the
36:36
river from the aquarium is a park which I'd like to explore sometime
36:43
as well I see a now leasing sign on a fairly new apartment complex I have to imagine
36:51
that'd be pretty cool place to live nice views of the city
37:01
one of the things you get here is because it's in the the sort of hilly River
37:08
Valley the roads are very
37:15
Serpentine or can be
37:46
again back to the Tennessee River last summer they had one of those
37:52
amphibious duck tours uh that was Drive people around on
37:58
the land and the water we did one of those in Dublin super fun we had a great
38:09
guide what a I love the use of this Riverfront space I wonder how much of it
38:15
actually gets used like how often it gets used for public events um if you're
38:21
from Chattanooga or in the area let me know I'm curious about that
38:28
and then Southern bell couple of paddle wheelers down there old school river
38:36
boats and then some more modern industrial barges
38:42
across the way they're I'm not sure what they're doing over there they seem to be moed
38:49
anyway I want to thank you guys for joining me here again in Chattanooga I
38:55
did walk up at Lookout Mountain this year here I went out to the battlefield of chamagua
39:01
Maga chaga um and uh filmed kind of a nature walk out
39:07
there through the woods it was beautiful peaceful it was very nice uh I'm not sure where I'm going to film next I'm
39:13
hoping to squeeze one more in on this trip but it probably will be in Atlanta
39:18
or between here in Atlanta and uh not sure what the hell that's going to work out but until
39:25
then keep on stepping
