Tariffs or chlorinated chicken: Will Starmer cave in UK-US trade deal with Trump?
Prime Minister Keir Starmer will be hoping that a deal with the US President Donald Trump could allow the UK to wriggle out of the baseline 10 per cent tariffs imposed on all goods, and the 25 per cent levy on steel, aluminium and automotive imports. The UK government has already been wargaming sacrificial lambs that it can offer up to Trump’s team to appease them. The first major lamb is the digital services tax, which the UK government introduced back in 2020 to get more tax revenue from big tech heavyweights like Meta, Amazon and Google. The government is reportedly considering scrapping the tax altogether. The other of Starmer’s lambs is chicken – chlorinated chicken, to be precise. In the US, it’s fairly standard practice to chlorine wash the birds – in the UK, it’s illegal. So far, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has said that any relaxation of food standards is a major red line for the government.
