Trump threatens Putin with tariffs: Can Russia and Ukraine reach peace deal?

US President Donald Trump has made his strongest threat to Vladimir Putin yet, with a possible 100 per cent tariffs against Russia, showcasing his “patriotic alliance” in support of Ukraine. However, this is only if a deal between Russia and Ukraine can’t be reached in 50 days. It’s a significant moment because this shows that Trump is willing to break Putin’s effective veto over a peace deal. So far, there has been a familiar pattern of the Russian leader simply refusing to come to the table to negotiate seriously with Ukraine, in discussions theoretically brokered by the US.
