10 years on from the referendum, the capital’s financial district is thriving, with headcount rising to 700,000.
Editor-in-Chief Christian May explains why the City doesn't want to rehash the debate and why London remains Europe's financial services capital.

Coming up to 10 years since Britain's
0:03
vote to leave the European Union. 10
0:04
years on from Brexit this summer and
0:07
whisper it, but the topic is back. Not
0:09
everybody here in the city is keen on
0:12
that. The government Kama wants to
0:14
reopen bits of the relationship with the
0:16
European Union. They're looking at
0:18
agriculture and food and some people in
0:20
that sector would welcome that. But
0:22
there's been a bit of a push back in the
0:23
city. People saying, "Hang on a minute,
0:25
leave us out of it." And why are they
0:27
saying that? I think the bottom line is
0:29
that 10 years on from that vote, the
0:31
city's sort of made its peace with
0:33
Brexit, it's got over it and more
0:35
importantly, it's found a new way of
0:38
doing what it does best. If you look at
0:40
the numbers, the city of London had
0:42
about half a million people working in
0:44
it in 2015. It's now got about 700,000
0:47
now. Headcounts only one measure, but
0:49
it's quite an important one, not least
0:50
given the [snorts] debate at the time of
0:52
the referendum about job losses and deep
0:55
structural change. I remember that
0:57
debate very clearly and of course the
0:59
stakes were high but looking back on it
1:00
now seems a bit out of proportion. Of
1:03
course in as far as the city speaks with
1:05
one voice institutionally it didn't want
1:07
Brexit to happen. It could have done
1:09
without the headache and it has had
1:11
consequences but over time the city of
1:13
London particularly the banking sector
1:15
has forged a new path. Uh the American
1:18
banking giants in particular are very
1:20
very comfortable with their place in
1:22
London and London remains by a country
1:24
mile Europe's financial services
1:26
capital. Indeed, every single year since
1:29
2015, the UK has been light years ahead
1:32
of every other European country for
1:34
foreign direct investment into financial
1:36
services. And in fact, it's the European
1:39
economy, the EU economy, which now
1:41
stands to shoot itself in the foot by
1:43
putting more restrictions on Londonbased
1:46
banks doing business in the block.
1:47
Reports out this week suggests that
1:49
there's growing pressure for the EU to
1:51
water that down because they're going to
1:53
cut themselves off from London. And
1:55
London, on the other hand, will continue
1:56
to thrive, not least because of its
1:58
connections with other places in the
2:00
world. So, people in the city are
2:02
saying, "We've made our peace with it.
2:04
We've found our new way in the world.
2:06
Please don't start trying to drag
2:08
financial services in particular back
2:10
into more complicated arrangements with
2:13
the European Union. It's 10 years on. I
2:15
remember the fury and the sound and the
2:17
passion of that debate. I remember the
2:18
chaos that followed in Parliament. And
2:20
now we can look around us here in the
2:22
city and say they've made the best of
2:23
it. And indeed, the city continues to
2:25
thrive.
