How Trump's 50% tariffs on India and threats to Putin impact Ukraine war

President Donald Trump’s trade policies are starting to intersect directly with the War in Ukraine. This week, Trump announced that Indian imports would be hit with a massive 50 per cent tariff – up from the expected 25 per cent. He accused India of “fuelling the war machine” after the country imported Russian Federation Oil. This all comes as Trump’s threats to Vladimir Putin – who he sees as stifling peace efforts and approaching negotiations in bad faith – have been cranked up a notch. Putin has been given until Friday, 8th August, to agree a ceasefire with Ukraine, with the threat that Trump will impose sweeping secondary tariffs if he doesn’t.
