Do Russia-Ukraine peace talks need Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy in person?

0:00
president Trump has said that he doesn't
0:02
expect any major progress in Russia
0:04
Ukraine peace talks until he meets Putin
0:07
while his own officials are in Istanbul
0:09
trying to salvage a summit that he seems
0:11
to have abandoned So Trump said he wants
0:14
a meeting with Putin as soon as he can
0:16
get it set up adding that we're going to
0:18
get it done But only a few days ago
0:20
European powers had the backing of Trump
0:22
as they ramped up the pressure on Russia
0:24
to accept a 30-day ceasefire In the
0:27
meantime the US president confidently
0:29
predicted that Zilinsky and Putin would
0:31
both attend the Turkish peace summit It
0:34
must have felt like that Nobel Peace
0:35
Prize was very much within reach But
0:38
today at what should have been the
0:39
climax of the summit the highest level
0:41
discussion going on between the US and
0:43
Russia will be between an adviser to
0:44
Marco Rubio and a former Russian culture
0:47
minister Rubio said that the killing has
0:49
to stop but it's not clear how much
0:51
power he actually has been delegated by
0:53
Trump to put any of this into action
0:55
Both US and Russian delegations claim to
0:58
have direct lines to their respective
1:00
presidents and some Russia Ukraine talks
1:02
are expected to start today This still
1:05
would be a significant moment as there
1:07
haven't been face-to-face negotiations
1:08
between the two countries since Russia
1:10
invaded Ukraine in 2022 UK Prime
1:13
Minister Karma has said that Putin is
1:15
dragging his heels and not serious about
1:17
peace The Kremlin does claim to be eager
1:20
for talks to go ahead today but of
1:21
course Putin is nowhere to be seen The
1:24
US position has stayed pretty consistent
1:26
with what is now a familiar routine for
1:28
Trump That's talking tough on Russia
1:30
promising to broker talks and ultimately
1:32
freezing Ukraine out of many of the
1:34
negotiations And while these fairly
1:36
limited talks play out in public the war
1:39
in Ukraine is still raging on Trump
1:41
keeps promising breakthroughs but
1:43
there's only so much leverage that he
1:44
has over a Russian regime that doesn't
1:47
appear to be taking the negotiations in
1:49
good faith For everything you need to
