Can Starmer wipe out all Trump tariffs on UK steel over golf?
For Donald Trump, this weekend presents a relaxing weekend to unwind at his Scottish golf courses. But for Keir Starmer, the lead-up to Monday will involve prepping for a high-stakes trade negotiation – to hopefully spare the British steel industry a lot of pain. He’s going for lunch and a “bilateral meeting” with Trump on Monday, where Starmer will be looking to shmooze some extra trade concessions out of the US President. So far, the government has managed to secure carveouts for the automotive and aerospace sectors, but the steel industry remains particularly exposed. Though the 25 per cent levy on British steel is half the global rate of 50 per cent, ministers are hoping that the tariff can be wiped out altogether.
