Can Premier League beat the £2.4bn summer transfer spending record?

0:00
The football season might be paused, but
0:01
the Premier League transfer market is
0:03
red-hot. Clubs are on an unprecedented
0:05
spending spree, on track to shatter all
0:08
previous records this summer. Here's
0:10
everything you need to know in under 60
0:11
seconds. We've already hit a massive
0:13
milestone. 1 billion spent faster than
0:16
ever before. That's £200 million more
0:18
than at this point in any previous
0:19
summer. Chelsea have shelled out over200
0:21
million while Liverpool have broken the
0:24
British transfer record with a 117
0:26
million deal for Florian Verts. Total
0:29
spending already stands at 1.3 billion
0:31
pounds. With almost seven weeks left in
0:33
the window, a new all-time benchmark is
0:35
definitely on the cards. Much of this
0:36
comes from a flurry of 50 to65 million
0:39
pound deals like Matteas Kuna to Man
0:41
United, Martin Zubendi to Arsenal and
0:43
Muhammad Kudis to Spurs. Why the surge?
0:45
An earlier transfer window opening
0:47
helped. But the key driver is the
0:49
league's new improved broadcast deals. A
0:51
phenomenon Alan Sugar famously called
0:53
the prune juice effect. The Premier
0:55
League's dominance is clear. They've
0:56
spent more than double the nearest
0:58
competitors like Italy's Syria A and
1:00
Germany's Bundesliga. This summer is
1:02
already one for the history books and
1:03
it's set to go even higher. For more
