But Labour infighting on welfare reforms, teasers of mega tax rises, lacklustre poll ratings and a sharp warning on the financial crisis that lies ahead are probably what’s keeping Downing Street officials awake at night. In a difficult fortnight for Labour marking its one-year anniversary in office, the government suggests it is ready for a reset, putting out strategy papers for the NHS, global trade and high-growth sectors. However, on welfare, it is still facing staunch opposition from dozens of MPs within the Labour Party.
