It's less than two weeks until the
0:02
Albanesei Labor government's new social
0:04
media ban for children under 16 comes
0:07
into force. December 10 is DDay for
0:10
Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok,
0:13
and some other apps as well. But one New
0:16
South Wales MP has put a spanner in the
0:18
works. He joins me now. John, good to
0:20
talk to you again. Um, firstly, why do
0:23
you oppose the social media ban?
0:25
Okay. Well, there's two principal
0:27
reasons, Chris. The first is that even
0:28
if Mr. Albanzi has the best of
0:30
intentions here, which is to protect
0:31
children online. Everybody agrees with
0:33
that. Uh, but what's going to happen is
0:35
the kids are very techsavvy. They are
0:37
going to get around this so-called ban.
0:41
It's been going around every playground
0:42
in Australia for the last 3 months about
0:45
how to get around the ban. So, they're
0:46
going to get around the ban, but the
0:47
parents are then going to think, well, I
0:49
don't need to worry about it anymore.
0:50
Social uh social media used to be bad
0:52
for my kids. I I used to need to monitor
0:54
them, but now I don't because Mr.
0:56
Albanese is going to do So, they're
0:57
going to go to the underground internet,
0:59
which is only going to be it's only
1:00
going to be a lot worse without parental
1:02
supervision.
1:03
Um, tell us about the grounds for the
1:06
challenge and whether it's expensive,
1:08
whether you've got the money to
1:10
deliver this legal outcome and how long
1:13
it'll take.
1:15
Well, we are hoping that there will be
1:18
an injunction uh next week. We're
1:20
certainly going to be having a hearing,
1:21
a preliminary hearing, and that if we
1:23
get the injunction, then that means that
1:24
the law will not come into effect on the
1:25
10th of December. Then we expect the the
1:28
court the the the the full the full uh
1:31
bench of the high court to make a
1:33
decision probably March, April next
1:35
year. But that is in the lapse of the
1:37
justices. We do not want the government
1:39
saying well you're not allowed to access
1:40
that information and you must access
1:42
this information at the school. So we
1:44
want a diversity of opinion. But I do
1:45
really want to stress, Chris, being a
1:48
parent in and in in this time uh
1:51
monitoring your kids' online social
1:54
media presence and activity is a
1:56
paramount responsibility.
1:58
Absolutely.
1:58
And and the parents if they they if they
2:01
take their foot off off the off the
2:02
brake and they think I don't need to
2:04
worry about it because the bureaucrat's
2:05
looking after it to me,
2:06
that's a recipe for disaster. Worse
2:08
things will happen.
