number of young people who are going to
0:01
be impacted in just 43 days on the 10th
0:05
of December, but the estimates are
0:07
somewhere around about two and a half
0:09
million young people are going to lose
0:10
access to their social media accounts in
0:12
43 days. Could I ask you each to tell us
0:16
what the experience of someone who's
0:17
just turned 15 who's on one of your
0:19
platforms will be over the next 43 days?
0:23
And while we've got you on the big
0:24
screen, we might start with you, Miss
0:26
Woods Choice.
0:28
Of course. Thank you, Senator. And I do
0:30
just want to start with saying we do
0:31
share the concerns of many of the
0:33
experts that you've heard from that talk
0:34
about um the fact that an age ban may
0:36
not work and might actually not address
0:39
the genuine safety concerns that I think
0:40
we all share about online safety for our
0:43
young people. Um there are many genuine
0:45
benefits for the entire community from
0:47
being online and finding connection and
0:49
an outlet for creativity. Um but of
0:52
course the laws passed the parliament
0:54
requires that we comply with it. And
0:56
what we'll be doing to uh to ensure that
0:58
we comply is deactivating those accounts
1:00
for people under 16. But if you're 15 um
1:03
on December the 10th, your account,
1:05
you'll have a number of options. Um that
1:07
includes the ability to deactivate your
1:09
account. You may also choose to delete
1:12
the account, but very importantly, we
1:14
will make sure that users have the
1:16
ability to archive the content that is
1:18
already there. Uh, and we also want to
1:20
make sure that we're communicating
1:21
really clearly with our community about
1:23
what they can expect and when they can
1:25
expect it.
1:27
Um, well, we've got some further
1:29
questions that come from that, but we
1:30
might then go to Meta and Snapchat. What
1:33
What's a 15year-old, someone who's just
1:35
turned 15, what's their next 43 days
1:37
going to look like?
1:39
Certainly, Senator, I'm happy to jump in
1:41
and then I can throw to Jennifer. Um so
1:43
we will certainly we're still working
1:44
through the precise sort of um wording
1:46
and flows but we'll certainly be
1:48
providing people with notice and um
1:50
deactivation of accounts as well um
1:53
which obviously you know there's
1:55
deletion which would remove the account
1:56
but deactivation will just um you know
1:59
temporarily pause it. So we're looking
2:00
through a range of different options but
2:01
making sure that there is very clear
2:03
notice to young people and their parents
2:05
so that they can uh take the actions
2:07
that work best for them.
