Portivant here in Waco. You know, the
0:04
busiest holiday shopping season is just
0:06
around the corner and there's a scam
0:08
that we really need to be talking about
0:09
right now because it could actually
0:11
impact your wallet before you even make
0:13
a purchase.
0:14
It is happening. It will happen.
0:16
Gift card scams cost Americans nearly
0:18
$217 million back in 2023. But how does
0:22
this happen? And how can we avoid being
0:25
a victim? Well, Jason Messa with the
0:27
Better Business Bureau serving the heart
0:28
of Texas says you should look at that
0:31
gift card pretty closely before buying
0:33
it and make sure that it doesn't look
0:34
like it's been tampered with.
0:36
They are going to stores and they're
0:38
going to the back of the card and
0:40
getting the ID, scanning it, and they
0:42
enter that information as if they're
0:43
purchasing it, but they don't actually
0:45
buy the card. Uh they simply get on a
0:47
notification list uh with that retailer,
0:49
and as soon as that card is bought and
0:51
loaded, they now have a note saying
0:53
there's money to be made. So, they go in
0:55
there and lift the money out of it,
0:57
stealing the very money that you were
0:59
going to give to somebody important this
1:01
holiday season. And here's why. Jason
1:03
says a best practice is to buy a gift
1:06
card directly from the store where it's
1:08
going to be used at, such as buying a
1:11
Walmart gift card at Walmart and buying
1:14
directly from a cashier and not using
1:16
selfch checkout. If it's a store
1:19
merchant card that you're buying from
1:20
the actual store itself, that's even
1:21
better because again, they can directly
1:24
check if that card has already been has
1:25
already been pre-registered or has funds
1:27
loaded onto it. But, uh, again, the most
1:29
you can do it with the cashier, a real
1:31
actual cashier can will able to will be
1:33
able to help you flag if that's been
1:36
tampered with or if it's been
1:37
registered. Yes.
1:38
And here's some last safeguards to keep
1:39
in mind. The Better Business Bureau says
1:41
go ahead and pull that gift card from
1:42
the back of the rack. They say those are
1:44
less likely to be tampered with. And
1:46
while you're checking out checking out
1:48
your purchase, go ahead and have that
1:50
gift card registered with the cashier.
1:52
Also, the last thing to keep in mind
1:54
before giving it to that person that
1:56
it's intended for, go ahead and check
1:58
the balance to make sure that you're not
1:59
giving a Phantom gift card. Reporting
